Distro recomendation

Hey guys, Happy New Year to all!

Found my first laptop (from 2005 or 2007 if I'm not mistaken) and thinking about refurbishing it to make it reusable again.

Specs aren't that great:
Sony Vaio VGN-N365E - Intel Core2Duo T2450 with 1GB RAM.

I've tried to boot it and got a "no OS found" message which led me to open the laptop and realize that past me had already snagged the HD for another purpose (I have got a spare 120GB SATA II SSD which will do fine).

That been said, looking for a lightweight Linux Distro to revamp this machine and make it usable again. It has a Windows Vista license which I've never made use of due to the fact that it was Windows Vista (🤡)
(at the time I was forced to downgrade to Windows XP due to the low RAM specs and that won't fly nowadays).

Here are some pics just because

Open Source Distributed Systems?

Hi there and happy NY!

I continue learning distributed systems. I've just read [1\] and I'm planning to implement something working for edicational purposes (using Linux as an underlying layer - so that's why I'm here).

My problem is that I haven't found enough well-designed things (except [2\] and [3\]) related to this subject.

Could you point me to any open source solutions you think I should pay attention to?

Any help is appreciated.

Problems with microphone

A microphone I bought arrived today, I plugged it in, and after some time it worked (although it was too low and has some echo, but it happens in Windows too).

When I unplugged it, it caused some screeching loud noise. I don't know why but I just restart pulseaudio and moved on.

Now my sound input appears to be broken because that happens with my internal microphone (it worked fine before).

Please, someone help. I already tried removing the '~/.config/pulse' folder and fiddling with settings in pavucontrol. I don't know what else to try!

Looking for people that know Linux

So we opened a discord server about programming the server is mostly international with English speakers mainly from India and West Africa , and my friend made this section about Operating systems but we do lack the ability and need someone to look at it and possibly be a mod eventually.also a person is posting links to Linux and we can't figure out if they are legit.

families of Linux

I saw this periodic table of Linux on the distro watch website
https://distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=family-tree

and I just wanted to hear from some people about which families of Linux you like the most and why...
I use Mint now.. I like it because it is easy, well kept up, quite a bit of software and it runs pretty good on my older laptops I see from the table it is in the Debian family

I have a Acer Chromebook 315 running Bobba and an Intel Processor. I installed crouton and Ubuntu but it is just the desktop. I can pull up the settings but can't close it afterwards. I can also make folders but nothing else. What did I do wrong?

ddcbc-gtk - A GTK interface for ddc brightness control

I use multiple external monitors, and was tried of fiddling around with the monitor buttons to try to adjust my brightness. Thankfully, I discovered ddcutil, which was helpful, but I wanted an interface to do this. I also tried ddcui, however it was rather slow because it took the time to read all of the provided features each monitor had. So I created my own application to specifically adjust the brightness on each of my monitors. I hope to turn this into extensions for some of the desktop environments to better integrate this into the desktop. Feel free to create issues/pull requests as needed - this is my first open source project (as trivial as it is) so go easy on me haha.

Do you care about Linux desktop marketshare? (Do you want Linux to become popular/mainstream?)

Honestly, I thought more people would say yes to the above, but every time I see/go into a discussion regarding packaging or fragmentation (and why it hampers Linux adoption), there's always someone who'd inevitably bring up the "Why do you want it to be mainstream anyway? I think it's fine where it is".

I ask because I went into Linux as someone who wasn't okay with the lack of privacy on Windows. I didn't really have an issue with Windows beyond that. I guess I just hope that one day we'll reach the level of "just works" on Windows, where you can play a game or use a program without having to worry about if it's compatible or if there's an alternative that exists. I don't really know if that's the popular "take" on Linux though.

Poem for linux and open source modified version of rabindranath tagore's poem.

Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high;

Where knowledge is free;

Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow propriety software walls;

Where words come out from the depth of truth;

Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection in the open-source projects;

Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of windows and its updates;

Where the mind is led forward by open-source into ever-widening thought and action

Into that heaven of freedom of linux, my Father, let my country awake.
