Help with Ubuntu

I have a Acer Chromebook 315 running Bobba and an Intel Processor. I installed crouton and Ubuntu but it is just the desktop. I can pull up the settings but can't close it afterwards. I can also make folders but nothing else. What did I do wrong?

ddcbc-gtk - A GTK interface for ddc brightness control

I use multiple external monitors, and was tried of fiddling around with the monitor buttons to try to adjust my brightness. Thankfully, I discovered ddcutil, which was helpful, but I wanted an interface to do this. I also tried ddcui, however it was rather slow because it took the time to read all of the provided features each monitor had. So I created my own application to specifically adjust the brightness on each of my monitors. I hope to turn this into extensions for some of the desktop environments to better integrate this into the desktop. Feel free to create issues/pull requests as needed - this is my first open source project (as trivial as it is) so go easy on me haha.

Do you care about Linux desktop marketshare? (Do you want Linux to become popular/mainstream?)

Honestly, I thought more people would say yes to the above, but every time I see/go into a discussion regarding packaging or fragmentation (and why it hampers Linux adoption), there's always someone who'd inevitably bring up the "Why do you want it to be mainstream anyway? I think it's fine where it is".

I ask because I went into Linux as someone who wasn't okay with the lack of privacy on Windows. I didn't really have an issue with Windows beyond that. I guess I just hope that one day we'll reach the level of "just works" on Windows, where you can play a game or use a program without having to worry about if it's compatible or if there's an alternative that exists. I don't really know if that's the popular "take" on Linux though.

Poem for linux and open source modified version of rabindranath tagore's poem.

Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high;

Where knowledge is free;

Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow propriety software walls;

Where words come out from the depth of truth;

Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection in the open-source projects;

Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of windows and its updates;

Where the mind is led forward by open-source into ever-widening thought and action

Into that heaven of freedom of linux, my Father, let my country awake.

I am searching for a simple mail-archive software.

Hello Dear Linux Community.

I am looking for (either for a Debian or an Ubuntu system) a mail archive client that allows to archive one (or more) IMap accounts, means each mail is copied and archived on receipt.

It would be nice if the archive is automatically compressed and optionally encrypted with PGP.

Is there a software, console is enough, which meets this requirement?

Total noob. (Doing this for the first time) Upgrading laptop to 1 TB nvme SSD with dual boot (windows 10 and ubuntu). How to connect and the new ssd to the laptop for data migration and how to migrate data.

First, My laptop doesn't have 2 nvme ports, will an external USB to nvme enclosure work for connecting the new SSD to the laptop for migrating data from my old SSD to the new SSD?

Second, Google search tells me that I can clone my old SSD using Clonezilla or dd on Linux but since I got a Samsung 970 Evo, I also have the option to use their software Samsung magic, but it's only for windows. I am confused which should I use?

Third, will cloning the ssd preserve both the operating systems?

Fourth, after cloning, can I just replace my old ssd with the new one and it'll work, or is there something else I have to do.

Thanks in advance!!

Using Linux on an old Acer Laptop

I have an old Acer 4530 running Windows 7. The OS is extremely laggy and with the end of support from Microsoft, I was thinking of trying out Linux. Mostly to see if it performs better and also because it is free.

Unfortunately, I have no clue how to do it. My concerns are getting the drivers needed. I am not entirely sure where to look for it. I have not experince using or installing linux on a computer. Have been a Windows user all along. Thought this might be a good opportunity to dip my toes in linux.

FYI, i would like to be using microsoft office on the computer. If it can run office 365, either online or offline, that would be great.

Any help, suggestions or direction on the above would be greatly appreciated.

I made a simple diagram on history of OS, feel free to comment

I tried to make the details as simplified as possible.

Please confirm if I gave justice to each linux distributions by correctly summarizing the key characteristics. :)

Also unsure how exactly POSIX or GNU comes into play for these distributions other than giving a general rule/philosophy, can anyone give tips?

Kernel 5.11 will have driver support for the ax210, in case you've been thinking about upgrading to it. It'll still use the iwlwifi module.

I jumped on the bandwagon too soon and wound up with an endless dmesg error spam about the wifi card not working. I'm just glad to see that there will be support soon.

The most interesting things I look forward to are:

\- rtw88: major bluetooth co-existance improvements

\- iwlwifi: support new 6 GHz frequency band

You can find a comprehensive list of all the networking fixes that will come with 5.11 here: http://lkml.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/2012.1/07779.html
