Using Linux on an old Acer Laptop
I have an old Acer 4530 running Windows 7. The OS is extremely laggy and with the end of support from Microsoft, I was thinking of trying out Linux. Mostly to see if it performs better and also because it is free.
Unfortunately, I have no clue how to do it. My concerns are getting the drivers needed. I am not entirely sure where to look for it. I have not experince using or installing linux on a computer. Have been a Windows user all along. Thought this might be a good opportunity to dip my toes in linux.
FYI, i would like to be using microsoft office on the computer. If it can run office 365, either online or offline, that would be great.
Any help, suggestions or direction on the above would be greatly appreciated.

I made a simple diagram on history of OS, feel free to comment
I tried to make the details as simplified as possible.
Please confirm if I gave justice to each linux distributions by correctly summarizing the key characteristics. :)
Also unsure how exactly POSIX or GNU comes into play for these distributions other than giving a general rule/philosophy, can anyone give tips?

Kernel 5.11 will have driver support for the ax210, in case you've been thinking about upgrading to it. It'll still use the iwlwifi module.
I jumped on the bandwagon too soon and wound up with an endless dmesg error spam about the wifi card not working. I'm just glad to see that there will be support soon.
The most interesting things I look forward to are:
\- rtw88: major bluetooth co-existance improvements
\- iwlwifi: support new 6 GHz frequency band
You can find a comprehensive list of all the networking fixes that will come with 5.11 here: http://lkml.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/2012.1/07779.html

Your Favorite laptop for running Linux in 2021? Recommendations
Hey guys,
So, apparently it's time to switch to Linux after using Mac OS for 10+ years. Privacy issues, glitches and removing compatibility with each single release makes me think that Linux is a better choice.
I'm currently using Macbook 2014 and while I can run Linux on it - I don't really want to. I tried that and there are some things that other laptops will handle better and 2014 was 7 years ago (damn!). I'm not new to Linux and pretty much understand what distro I'll use there (but any recommendation based on your subjective opinion are welcome too).
Thinking about laptop with those features:
1) Intel or AMD x86 processor. Doesn't really matter - just some future-proof
2) HDMI, USB and all other standard ports. Not looking for a modern Mac that doesn't have much ports
3) 32 Gb of RAM and more supported. Since my current Mac has 16 Gb of RAM I'm looking for something better, not worse
4) At least some upgrading is possible. Again, not a modern Mac where you can't change anything
5) New or used, but I guess not more than 2 years old model
6) More or less balanced price. I want to use it for at least 3-4 years. Again, something future-proof is preferable.

Apart from all that, what's your personal pick for this year? Will you wait for a specific model?
Thanks! And Happy New Year!

If a linux/unix was rewritten today, what would be different?
If we could write a whole new unix-like operating system from scratch today, such that nothing in it has to be backwards compatible with old hardware or standards (only has to support modern hardware to reduce complexity), what are the "lessons learned" and unnecessary baggage?
By operating system, I mean everything from the kernel to the final applications that your desktop environment comes with by default. For example, would it be a microkernel? Would terminal emulators follow a different standard? Would ascii be abolished and replaced by unicode? Would the kernel be written in something other than C? It would certainly need an X11 equivalent, and maybe gui libraries. Or maybe even libraries work differently, too. Maybe bash is outdated and something crazy like lua, lisp, or even a hot code reloading compiled language replaces it. (Yes I realize the purpose/usage of bash and those other languages are totally different, but I want to allow OS designs that are so totally different that something crazy like this might make sense)
I realize this question has a huge scope, so go wild with the answers. Any opinions you have about anything could lead me down an interesting rabbit hole as I try learning more about linux.

recommended headsets for ubuntu 20.04.?
Hey
recently i installed ubuntu 20.04 on my surface and now my headphones (bose qc 35II) have problems with playing audio and a proper microphone function at the same time.
Because of corona my lectures are all online, so this is a really big issue for me!
On ubuntu 18.04 the audio and micrphon didn't work good at the same time, but they worked on an acceptable level.
I'm really annoyed of using the qc 35II with ubuntu, so i'm searching for an alternative.
Do you know some good alternatives, which actually work?
