Your Favorite laptop for running Linux in 2021? Recommendations

Hey guys,

So, apparently it's time to switch to Linux after using Mac OS for 10+ years. Privacy issues, glitches and removing compatibility with each single release makes me think that Linux is a better choice.

I'm currently using Macbook 2014 and while I can run Linux on it - I don't really want to. I tried that and there are some things that other laptops will handle better and 2014 was 7 years ago (damn!). I'm not new to Linux and pretty much understand what distro I'll use there (but any recommendation based on your subjective opinion are welcome too).

Thinking about laptop with those features:

1) Intel or AMD x86 processor. Doesn't really matter - just some future-proof

2) HDMI, USB and all other standard ports. Not looking for a modern Mac that doesn't have much ports

3) 32 Gb of RAM and more supported. Since my current Mac has 16 Gb of RAM I'm looking for something better, not worse

4) At least some upgrading is possible. Again, not a modern Mac where you can't change anything

5) New or used, but I guess not more than 2 years old model

6) More or less balanced price. I want to use it for at least 3-4 years. Again, something future-proof is preferable.

Apart from all that, what's your personal pick for this year? Will you wait for a specific model?

Thanks! And Happy New Year!

If a linux/unix was rewritten today, what would be different?

If we could write a whole new unix-like operating system from scratch today, such that nothing in it has to be backwards compatible with old hardware or standards (only has to support modern hardware to reduce complexity), what are the "lessons learned" and unnecessary baggage?

By operating system, I mean everything from the kernel to the final applications that your desktop environment comes with by default. For example, would it be a microkernel? Would terminal emulators follow a different standard? Would ascii be abolished and replaced by unicode? Would the kernel be written in something other than C? It would certainly need an X11 equivalent, and maybe gui libraries. Or maybe even libraries work differently, too. Maybe bash is outdated and something crazy like lua, lisp, or even a hot code reloading compiled language replaces it. (Yes I realize the purpose/usage of bash and those other languages are totally different, but I want to allow OS designs that are so totally different that something crazy like this might make sense)

I realize this question has a huge scope, so go wild with the answers. Any opinions you have about anything could lead me down an interesting rabbit hole as I try learning more about linux.

recommended headsets for ubuntu 20.04.?

Hey

recently i installed ubuntu 20.04 on my surface and now my headphones (bose qc 35II) have problems with playing audio and a proper microphone function at the same time.
Because of corona my lectures are all online, so this is a really big issue for me!
On ubuntu 18.04 the audio and micrphon didn't work good at the same time, but they worked on an acceptable level.
I'm really annoyed of using the qc 35II with ubuntu, so i'm searching for an alternative.

Do you know some good alternatives, which actually work?

Impressed by Deepin 20.1. And a bit worried.

Installed the new 20.1 version to have a look. If there is any candidate for "The Year of Linux Desktop", this could be the one. Really smooth and polished, at least on the surface. Have not had time yet to work a full day and look more in detail.

Some observations:

The EULA could go away. Don't really understand the purpose (and did not read it all). First Linux dist that I have seen using this (and I have seen them all since 1995).

The app store have most noscripts in Chinese, less useful for most of us outside of China. The store seems to be shock full with apps though. It was also a bit slow to load, but I guess it is because the servers are located in China (my guess).

System monitor and information is the best I have ever seen (GUI's, dont compare with command line tools). The System Info gave me more info on my Matebook X Pro's hardware details than Huawei does. Very useful when I continue to troubleshoot the touchpad sleep/wake problems in OpenCore/MacOS.

Customisation and looks are really nice. However, wallpapers seems to be shamelessly stolen from Apple, Microsoft and other vendors. A shame when there are som many free wallpapers everywhere to choose from.

I installed on the 4th partition, alongside with EFI, MacOS/OpenCore and Arch, and the installation played nicely and did not obstruct anything. After installation was complete, I added Deepin to Systemd's menu in the EFI partition and updated efibootmgr to use Systemd instead of Deepin's Grub. Worked fine.

Lastly; since this is a chinese product, I am concerned about what kind of data Deepin collects and send to China. For example, I did not dare to use my normal (secure) linux root or user passwords until there are more reliable information about Deepin and privacy. I will also keep an eye on my routers firewall log to see if there is anything out of the ordinary recorded.

QT 5.15 Commercial-only LTS phase starts: Closing the 5.15 branch(es) on 5th January

With Qt 6.0.0 released and the first patch release (Qt 6.0.1) coming soon, it is time to enter the commercial-only LTS phase for Qt 5.15 LTS. All the existing 5.15 branches remain publicly visible, but they are closed for new commits (and cherry-picks). Exception being the Qt WebEngine (and the deprecated Qt Script), which have a 3rd party LGPL dependency. Closing happens tomorrow, 5th January 2021. After this the cherry-picks go to another repository that will be available only for the commercial license holders. We will arrange repository access to the commercial license holders, so in addition to the official releases it is possible to use the repositories. Instructions about this will be available to commercial license holders during next week, after we have completed the license change and other preparations. First commercial-only Qt 5.15.3 LTS patch release is planned to be released in February.

What Windows does better that we Linux community should learn from?

I love the flexibility and customisabilty of Linux distros, and many advantages GNU/Linux distributions have over Windows.

But I would like to know what are some of the things we should learn from the Windows OS (or their community)?

Is there anything Linux/BSD related that makes you feel nostalgic about?

Browsing on reddit, somehow I bumped into this Plan 9 screenshot and man, it does look clunky, but I kinda miss those geeky times.

I'm all in for practicality and ease of use.

But, at the same time, I kinda miss that sort of adventure that was getting on the inner parts of Linux and spend days reading documentation, looking at every denoscription in the Kernel menuconfig and getting to know, for the first time, that immense gallery of software technology that was available for free, even for the shittiest machine a low end computer could run.

Also, getting X to run, starting with fluxbox, using Xfce for a while and ending in the Gnome 2 desktop, which, contrary to Gnome3, was made to be fully customizable.

I wouldn't do it again, but it was a fun ride.

Iptables: table->chain relation (are they using the correct terms in the manual? )

The man page says that the tables (filter/nat/mangle/...) contain/consist-of/have/provide their respective chains. So as someone new to iptables i would suspect that the kernel on the outer loop processes the tables (filter, nat, mangle... ) and on the inner loop it would process their respective exclusively owned chains (INPUT, PREROUTING, FORWARD,...)

But this seems stupid and is obviously not the case when i -j TRACE a packet. It goes i.e from

raw:PREROUTING:
mangle:PREROUTING:
nat:PREROUTING
mangle:FORWARD
filter:FORWARD

That confuses me very much. Would'nt you better speak it the opposite way: A Chain contains/processes the following List of Tables... Also the manual should list in which order they are processed.

Is Proprietary Software more secure than Open Source?

I’ve seen an argument lately that goes like this:

Open source software is more secure because everyone can see if there’s a risk to the users privacy.

But Proprietary software is more secure because it’s more locked down and the only people editing it are the creators of it.

Of course this doesn’t account for a majority of things like, users not contributing or checking the source code of software. Or companies making insecure software on purpose. But I just want to know what you all think, and which side to you fall towards?

DISCLAIMER: THIS IS NOT A “ONE WAY OR THE OTHER” SCENARIO ITS SIMPLY A SURVEY AND A DISCUSSION.
