Is there any linux program that can backup my packages in order to reconfigure my system when i format my pc?

I use lots of machines and from time to time i end up formatting my pc (either because of distro hopping or just because i changed machines). Having a fast way to manage my packages (just as when you retrieve data when you change from one smartphone to another) would be very useful.

Switching From MacOS to Linux

Okay, I'm finally making the switch after lots of waffling. Here's where I need help.

I have Ubuntu installed and all is fine but I have nearly 1TB of data on my Mac plus some backups.

* I need to transfer this data to disks that Ubuntu can read and is encrypted.
* I'd rather not install any programs I don't absolutely have to on Ubuntu.
* Suggestions for how best to do this without any data loss?

Thanks in advance!

p.s. In case anyone from the Apple world is curious as to why. The final straw is me just wanting to reinstall MacOS (from a usb drive) on the MBP that I paid $2,600 for and Activation Lock preventing it. I got it all handled but what a PITA. I mean, I can't sit in my home and reinstall the way I want without connecting to the internet? Anyway, sorry for the rant.

KVM/VMM cant create new VM

Hello! I'm new to KVM and am having some issues getting it up and running. I tried googling the issue but that didn't yield any results. whenever I try and create a new VM I get the flowing error.

"Unable to complete install: 'Cannot access storage file '/mnt/ISO\'s/ISO\'s/CorePlus-current.iso': No such file or directory'"

and I have no idea why.

dvd vs usb burning/what do you prefer to use?

i prefer dvd tbh as i have had about 3 usb drives die (did last long tho) tho it does go a bit slower at times but is a lot better and cheaper.

dvd pros:

1.can get a lot for cheap and if you dont have a burner thay are also

2.last a long time

3.good if you want to try or just have curtain distros on hand

4.more likely to burn right

5.harder to lose as its bigger

cons of dvd:

1.most are 1 time burn meaning if iso was bad its also bad and can't be fixed (most the time)

2.dose take more space

pros of usb:

1.smaller

2.lot faster

3.more portable

4.more programs for burning (tho still a lot for dvds)

5.can be used on more computers if you dont have an extural dvd drive

cons of usb:

1.can die from to many burns

2.can be lost as they are small most the time

3.can cost a bit compared a dvds (10$ can get you one usb but 10 or 15 dvds)

i think it kinda depends on what you use if you just need one distro or don't want to use others or need others then yea a usb would be good but if you have mutable uses or want some or incase you brake your install and need a different distro or even just to have them dvds would be better

what do your prefer to use dvd or usb?

Looking for running an Android app on ARM64 Linux environment?

I recently setup a Kali Linux arm64 aka aarch64 in a VM (not the regular x86 one, cuz I have ARM hardware). wanna know if it's possible to run android apps (natively) inside it.

I tried Anbox but it just failed to load. not sure if it's designed only for x86 OSs or just not support inside a VM.

anyways, let me know your suggestions and other thoughts as well. I'm quite new to Linux. as well as to Reddit 😋

Cheers!!

Use a GoPro as webcam on Linux (without additional hardware)

The support for the newly added webcam mode for the GoPro(8&9) is pretty poor on Linux. I found some tutorials out there that describe the rough steps, but always require some personal adaptions. To simplify this and to get en par with Windows, I created this noscript. Enjoy!

If you find any bugs or just have an enhancement request, feel free to open an issue on GitHub or just simply post it here.

How can Linux distros ever be successful on consumer devices if people actively try to avoid them?

I was curious and started looking at some laptops to see if I could find any with Linux pre-installed, and found some models (the laptop in this case is a super low end one, with 32gb of emmc memory, a Celeron CPU and 2gb of RAM). Naturally I tried searching for some reviews on YouTube to see what people were talking about it and even with the review saying that while the system wasn't compatible with apps like Microsoft Office, alternatives could be easily installed, many people in the comment section were asking if they could install Windows (mind you those people seemed like common consumers, not the kind of people familiar with computers) or if someone knew another similar model with Windows pre-installed.

There's a notion that having Linux pre-installed is a way to increase its market share on consumer products, but apparently people actively try to avoid models with it or even go to the extent of learning to format and install Windows on them.

What's so wrong? Is it familiarity with Windows? Program compatibility? Ease of use? What could make a person see Linux as a negative spec on a machine? Maybe Linux distros are seem as a bad and generic alternative to Windows? What could Linux distros do to be more compelling to common users?

Thanks for reading.

What is the downside of building locally and adding the binary to PATH?

A discerning feature of a distro is how it manages the installed applications. Ubuntus update the apps once in a while (~2 years)..debian longer..Arch updates them as soon as possible etc...

Now, I'm using Xubuntu 18.04 and I think I have come up with a solution for a)apps that aren't in any repo and b) outdated versions of apps. I'm asking you guys to tell me what is the drawback of this method? 😀
So I git clone the repo, checkout the latest stable and build locally...then I add the binary's path to ~/.profile...
This way I lose manpages, icons and desktop integrations, etc...
But aside from that, I don't see why it is not a practical and simple solution to this notorious problem...
Looking forward to harshest of criticisms, because I think n00b me has solved the packaging problem 😅

Linux + 4k Monitor: Solution?

So my problem is the following: I have a Samsung 28 inch 4k monitor. I want to use linux on my pc cause windows isnt an option for me anymore. The problem with linux (or at least ubuntu 20.04LTS) is that everything is pretty tiny on a 4k monitor this size. I already enabled fractional scaling and it works out pretty well (i like 125 - 150%). The only problem is that applications like wine (winecfg) and also applications running with wine are still on the normal 100% scaling.

Is there any good way of getting around all this? Is there any distro, any desktop environment etc. that can deal really well with big 4k monitors? Any answer is appreciated.

Shorewall Question: RATE LIMIT

Hi, first sorry if this is the wrong place to ask.

Im getting flooded by requests from a load of hosts and want to rate limit them.

From what I remember I should set ACCEPT on tcp 443 and 80, set the source as net followed by the ip addresses and then add a rate limit expression in the RATE column. If thats right then im just wondering about how to add the massive list of source ip addresses.... theres loads. The rules would look messy as heck.

ACCEPT net:ip1,ip2,ip3..... fw tcp 80,443 s:1/min:3

Something like that? Its been ages and the shorewall docs allways leave me second guessing myself.

Anyway thank you and sorry again if this was the wrong place to ask.

Just released a new version of the disk usage visualization terminal tool - VIZEX

So finally got some time during the winter break and release a new version of the terminal disk usage visualization tool called [vizex](https://github.com/bexxmodd/vizex), where you can graphically display each disk usage/availability in the terminal and modify colors and graph types.

In version 1.5.1:

* Added option to display battery information if you are on your laptop
* You can save the output as a JSON or CSV
* Corrected bugs and refactored for better readability

Please, try it out! Any feedback is much appreciated!

Energy efficiency with Linux

Hi everyone,

I've been using Linux non-continuously for the past 6 years on laptops and tryied some distros (Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Mint, Open SuSE). For me, the best pros of Linux over Windows/MacOS is the highly consistent UI (Windows looks like a time machine with interfaces from XP to 10), privacy and support for programming. Now I have been using Ubuntu continuously for the past 5 months on a master degree program. Ubuntu 20.04 is the first LTS that I really enjoy!

But one thing stills sucks on Linux: energy efficiency. In my laptop (Asus VivoBook) I have some 2-4 hours of usage away from the charger with Windows 10 and it's almost impossible see the computer with his vents on max or any heat. On Linux, otherwise, the machine use to make some heat on the keyboard and the battery almost never passes 1.5 hours away from the charger. I'm using CPU Power Manager to limit the frequency of the processor and save some energy, but it's not resolving.

The question is: what are the main differences between Windows and Linux in this area? Are there any attention of the developers to this area? I really want to know why Windows even with a lot of background process, high usage and inferior performance achieving better results in the energy efficiency.
