I Won't Be Able To Take My AP Tests Because CollegeBoard Doesn't Support Linux

The software only came out a few days ago. I just realized there is no Linux version.

Maybe it was too much to think that CollegeBoard, a "non-profit" (that happens to make millions of dollars off students every year through monopolistic control over college admissions processes), would have accessibility in mind when it comes to a digital platform for education. Are all first-generation high school students expected to shell out thousands for a Mac, or >$100 for a Windows license? I also find it highly unlikely that they would have access to "school-managed chromebooks." These tests should be accessible to all who would like to take them. Here are the links:

I respectfully request you to share this as much as possible. More people should be aware of this horrible situation, and it would to great to raise awareness with articles on Phoronix, etc. Eventually, I would hope CollegeBoard notices something needs to change and develops a Linux version of the software (even if it requires a specific distribution).

Anyone here who knows about Rockey Linux? Can we trust them like Centos?

As I have read on the rocky Linux site it team lead by Gregory Kurtzer who was started Centos. CentOS was the perfect OS that I have used in my career.

If anyone here can tell me can trust Rocky Linux (bug-to-bug compatible with RHEL )also or we have to wait 1-2 years to compare with RHEL.

Devuan now provides 4.0 alpha isos

The devuan project now provides isos based on debian 11(testing).

If you are interested in a systemd-less debian go check it out the mirrors on the download page.

NOTE: not all mirrors provide the 4.0 iso as of now.
the 4.0 branch is called chimera

FTP server

Hello,

Trying to get a FTP server setup properly on Ubuntu. I must use FTP as the older machine that will be sending files to this server supports no other protocol. This is a old headless WD DX4000 NAS I have successfully installed ubuntu on using a method where you solder a USB to TTL serial connector onto the motherboard to access bios and see installer output. I have 4 drives inside, ubuntu is running on the smallest drive in Bay 1. Bay 2, 3, and 4 each have a 2TB drive and are setup in raid 5 using mdadm. The raid is mounted at /Data/.

Is there a way I can set my FTP server so the FTP directory is on the Raid 5 rather than the ubuntu OS HDD. I want all files sent via FTP to be stored to the raid drives. Using VSFTPD.

People who've tried it or no longer use it—how is FreeBSD on the desktop?

I'm really looking to get into FreeBSD, both on server and desktop (out of curiosity and for future jobs—it's a niche and I might have a higher chance of getting a job in it if the FreeBSD job market is small, but I've not searched yet).

I'm already making some rudimentary plans in my mind for the server-side of things, but I'm wondering about the desktop-side of things. Has anyone here given FreeBSD a whirl on a desktop/laptop and can report on how it is? I'm asking on r/linux because r/freebsd feels tiny and I want to get the opinion of maybe some ex-FreeBSDers or FreeBSDers here on what the experience is like (eg. do I have to compile everything like in Gentoo, how hard is it to set up graphics/networking, what WMs/DEs can I use, et cetera, et cetera)

I don't use a lot of software (Discord browser version would be fine, Telegram, emacs, Python/Ruby/Rust, some standard UNIX utilities, GIMP/Inkscape sometimes, and a Windows VM for some things—this last one might be hard?), so I feel like it might be viable. Is it actually viable to use on desktop, or am I fooling myself? It seems quite tantalizing to try it.

What is the best linux distro for scientific research?

I am looking for a linux distro that can be a true replacement for windows 10. I don't mind the poor linux graphics, I just need a stable distro with the best applications/packages targeted for scientific community. Can you suggest some?

Use file for Samba User Backend?

I'm trying to build a small SMB honeypot for a Windows Domain network. I've read through the docs a bit and it seems like it's only possible to authenticate a user if they're present in /etc/passwd and their smb password has been set via smbpasswd or pdbedit – but obviously that doesn't scale well.

Anyone knows a way of having a simple file used as user + password backend smbd uses to look up the entries?
