Piping incoming TTY serial data into X11 as generic keyboard input?

I've got an old laptop (circa 1991), running Windows 3.1 that I'm using as a distraction-free word processor. It's helping my writing productivity a ton! I've also managed to get it sharing files with my main PC through a serial port connection.

The mechanical keyboard on this thing is an absolute beauty, however, and there are times that I'd like to use it on my main rig, for instance when I'm going back and forth between the two for online reference material, and don't want to have two keyboards in addition to my two mouses.

How can I get desktop's X11 setup to recognize text input coming in from my /dev/ttyUSB0 device as generic keyboard HID input? Using terminal software on the laptop is no issue. I've been playing around with xdotool, which I learned about from this old StackExchange thread but couldn't get the hang of writing a noscript to listen to it.

It would, on the one hand, seem trivial to use a teletype input as a keyboard on a nix system seeing as that is exactly how nix systems began! Am I missing something basic here?

Last time I checked on this, I remember reading that even if you disabled it - it would eventually enable itself. How is the whole situation between snap and ubuntu right now? Worth giving ubuntu a shot?

Every big Windows update breaks the boot manager

Just a few days ago a big Windows update broke my dual boot configuration. GRUB doesn’t appear anymore during boot, instead Windows boots directly. This happens regularly, but I’m never able to find a lasting solution. Is there just no way to prevent this or am I failing to google this problem correctly?

My current solution involves a live system running the boot-repair program. But do I really have to do this every time?

It really feels like Microsoft is bullying me...

Distributions with apparmor

Are they safer, after installation, Ubuntu or openSUSE for bringing installed and activated Apparmor, or Fedora with Selinux, which Archlinux, Manjaro or Endeavouros, who do not bring anything from that standard?

Any tips for beginners

I’ve been using linux for around a year now but still feel like a noob, i have trouble using the terminal I can never remember the exact commands and have to check with makes the process long and painful. How do you get use to using the terminal, did you just memorize the commands? If so how long did it take, are there tactics etc...

How to save the configuration in Linux ?

I want to ask is there any way for example to save the configuration of a Linux machine as file for example ? or in a backup file ? I'm not talking about the OS itself only the configuration I'm thinking to have a backup of MYSQL and the configuration ?

For those of you working as Linux sysadmins, what distro(s) do you prefer to use at home?

Do you like to use a distro that’s in the same family as what you use at work (e.g. using Fedora as a RHEL admin)? Or do you prefer to use something else?

The default route will not change on ubuntu 20.04

Hello Team. I recently flashed a 2014 Mac Mini to Ububtu 20.04 to serve as a DNS and network monitoring server in the Data Center. When I hooked up to a wired network, I set the IP address via the desktop network settings. The connection works at home and is still working. I took the Mac Mini/Linux box to the Data Center and I got a DHCP address. however the default route was still pointing to the one used at my house (192.168.....). I changed the YAML file for netplan and it changes momentarily, however, when I go back to connect I get the same settings as before. Any idea of what causes this?

Has there ever been a linux distro that was created for malicious reasons? For example including malware to steal passwords, etc.

Really curious if there ever has been a linux distro that was made for something like that. I can't really find much info on the subject either. Mainly just posts asking "is linux secure" or "can linux get malware" which is not what I'm looking for.

For work/life separation, do you use separate accounts on the OS, separate OSes, or separate machines?

I am curious about those of you who use Linux as a daily driver at work.
Do you use the same account for personal and work use? Do you use separate accounts on the same OS, one for work, one for play?
Do you boot into separate distros? Or do you have separate machines for work and play?

I'm asking because I currently use my one computer for both work and personal use. Unfortunately, I've found I get distracted pretty easily, especially when certain programs (discord, 0ad, etc.) are easily accessible. So, I'm hoping to get some inspiration from you guys for some thoughtful solutions.

Low space, advise needed

I have a remote server far-far away from me. Also there is a file I need to download from it. The file size is about 150Gb. Total HDD size is 250Gb. So now less then 100G's are free. Download speed is about 300kB/s, so the total download time is over 100 hours. The issue is in unreliabile network between me and server. Every few hours I have a VPN drop, so the file download is also dropped and I had to restart it. I thought about using 'split' command and making small chunks to download one by one. Here is the where space issue starts it's effect - only 100Gb is free on HDD and 'split' is firstly doing copies of the original, not overwriting it. So now I have original file (150G) and a lot of xab, xac, ... (10G) chunks, but the total free space is not enough for both and I get an memory error from 'split'.

Can you advise something?

Does anyone have any experience as a regular Linux desktop user in a larger professional environment?

I have been using Linux for maybe 10 years at home. But at work we do of course use Windows as almost everybody else. I work for a government agency with around 2000 employees. We do what I think most larger organizations do; send emails, writing documents, spreadsheets, presentations, SharePoint, different web-based systems, a lot of meetings and video conferences (Skype), both internal and external. We don’t really use very specialized software such as CAD.

But I am personally very curious if someone have any experience of using Linux (and the associated software) as a “regular” desktop user in larger professional environment. How is it? Desktop environment? What software do you use? What is your overall impression? Issues?

It seems to me that it would be a bit difficult to obtain the same level of integration that you get in a Windows environment, for example handling meetings and such?
