South Korea's Government is Switching to Linux

South Korea wants to switch government computers to Linux based software, ditching Windows in the process.
The country’s Ministry of the Interior and Safetyreckon that migrating away from Microsoft Windows will lower costs and reduce reliance on a single operating system.
With 2020 bringing the end of “free” support for Windows 7, a system widely used throughout the South Korean government, the timing is prudent.
There’s no word (yet) on what sort of Linux distribution South Korea might use (or whether the government would create its own) but let’s not put the cart before the horse: there are a few hurdles Linux needs to clear first…
Although Linux is free-to-use for anybody, even governments, moving to a Linux-based OS is not a cost-free endeavour.

In fact, the Ministry expects switching to Linux will cost a cool $655 million US (roughly 780 billion won). Why? The price of implementation, transition, and the purchase of new PCs.
And that’s it things gets that far.
First, the Ministry plans to test-run Linux on its systems to check for compatibility and security issues.
Since many of the governments’ websites, software and networking devices are built to run on, or be compatible with Windows-based operating systems, a tentative ‘dipping of toes in the water’ is a sound move.
The timing for Linux is good as the rise of mobile has slowly chipped away at the South Korea’s love affair with ActiveX, an infamousproprietary framework made by Microsoft and despised by the world.
And if no major issues are encountered during the pilot run then Linux systems will roll-out more widely — potentially serving as the catalyst for more governments to adopt Linux.

Just Don’t Mention Germany

Now, when it comes to governments who’ve previously made the switch to Linux, none is as famous as Munich, Germany.
The district’s on-again/off-again affair with Linux and Windows (and later LibreOffice) delivered more shock twists than an early season of Game of Thrones!
Cynics might be tempted to look back at the Munich mess and wonder if South Korea’s public announcement is less a sincere commitment to furthering the FOSS cause in societal structures and more a negotiating tactic with Microsoft.
If so, it’s a ballsy way to bag a discount, that’s for sure.
Whether South Korea switches to Linux in the end or not — don’t expect movement before 2020 — it’s nice that Linux is at least viewed as a viable, practical choice by those in charge.

Lubuntu 16.04 LTS Startup Sound.

Not sure if this is the best place to share, so please direct me to a better sub if needed.

I have a friend that owns a very old laptop and Windows Vista had become basically unusable.I told him id fix it for free, but I'd be replacing the OS with a Linux Distro.All is good, I chose Lubuntu because of its Ubuntu-like gracefulness and light weight LXDE desktop environment.I really wanted him to be impressed with the new system, so i made it about as beautiful as you can make LXDE, but i wanted to make a custom startup sound for him. Apparently the majority of the community around Lubuntu doesnt like start-up sounds.Im no expert at all. I'm very noobie compared to most of you brilliant people here, so i was googling around all over for a way to make this thing play this darn audio file i made at start up.I did it.Got it working just like i wanted.The reason I'm making this post is because every forum i went to never had an answer.I dont want to make an account on all of those sites so i just wanted to post the solution on the front page of the internet for future people who may be facing the same problem.It was so simple and i feel silly..Lubuntu 16.04 LTS

Open LXDession Configuration. (Menu > Preferences > Default Applications for LXSession)

Go to Auto Start,Add a manual autostart noscript.All you have to do here is just us paplay... (i know, im retarded..)I put the .ogg file in /libThe default filemanager is PCmanFMopen terminal, sudo pcmanfmmove the file to the directory you like, copy that file locationpaste with filename following, and put paplay at the beginning.

So its this.. paplay /lib/mattstartup.ogg

Sorry i know this is a waste of time for most of you, but i really wanted to help anyone else in the future looking for the solution lol

Intel Xeon X5650 6 Core + 32GB RAM + SSD + Ubuntu + KVM?

I'm planning to build a system to run Ubuntu. Here's the config that I thought:

CPU: Intel Xeon X5650 6 CoreRAM: 32/64 GBStorage: 250GB SSD + 1 TB HDD

Do you think running any Linux OS + KVM to run 2 Windows machines under KVM would be a nice idea?
Or Windows as host with Hyper-V running Linux + 2 More Windows OS.

Main usage of this system will be as a software developer and I also want to use UIPath which is only available for Windows and some other softwares.

I need some info whether this system will perform good or not because my current laptop can't hold Ubuntu + Windows under KVM. It does perform under average load but then it's temperature rises which can even harm my laptop on long run.

Hey all, thanks for your amazing input on btrfs vs. other file systems. The 8 TB drive arrived this morning. Apparently 8 TB to Seagate isn’t based on 1,024, but 1,000
And oh fun, the RPi basically IO locks when moving 2 TB of data over it’s USB Bus. iostat and other tools just don’t even run. There is a reason they are hobby machines. Go to bed, and hope stuff went well.

Also, Jesus h... don’t fuck up your fstab if you don’t have physical access to your RPi. I fat fingered one character... you know how this went.

So, I ended up putting a bit over 6TB to ext4, the other partition will be experimental btrfs. I’m going to buy 4 more and a PC, and a hardware RAID controller and sadly, Google’s TPUs are external. (My company is building a TensorFlow based AI, I need something stupidly fast.)

Is it possible to take a snapshot of the OS and install it on a different computer? For example: I have Ubuntu on a computer and would like to take that same configuration (drivers and all) and install it on a different computer.

AMD-Vi completion-wait loop timed out

hey friends, trying to reinstall Linux on my desktop pc. I'm always having the same problem. After I choose to install in the initial installation-screen and after some black screens I get the message: 'AMD-Vi completion-wait loop timed out'. Then depending on the distribution I get nothing or cryptic messages repeating, without any changes. I tried ubuntu (18.04.2 & 19.04), fedora and arch so far. The only thing I found on google was changing the iommu settings in the north bridge configuration. Which didn't help. Whats also strange is, that I already had ubuntu installed some time ago without any changes to the system.

Here is my current system:

AMD Ryzen 5 1400

2 x 8GB G-Skill Ripjaws DDR4-3200 CL16

XFX Radeon RX 550 4GB

ASRock AB350M Pro4
