Hello,

First of all im sorry if this post is against the rules but i haven't found a rule that would forbid this post.
Since this is not really a support request and rather meant as a discussion im posting this here and not on /r/linuxquestions.

Virtualization on linux, the candies.

I use linux at home i learnt linux and how to do this stuff via internet. Fedora Silverblue in a virtual machine with GPU Passthrough and a linux container with xfce, recording on wayland is hard, my ram usage gone over 9000 while recording. 😩😭🤔

Kde connect is fantastic!

Im a "casual" linux user, I use Ubuntu, mostly happy with Unity, I generally get my software from the inbuilt repositories or PPAs, I rarely compile from source, Yadda, Yadda. I just gotta say, Kde connect is brilliant!

Recently they must have pushed out an update, and now my phone automatically pauses my youtube videos on my PC when I get a call? I can also pause and play youtube videos on my PC from my phone? I dont need to VNC to my desktop PC, when im watching videos from bed, since I can use the phone to control the playback, and also use the KDE connect application as a keyboard/mouse.

I love feeling as though im living in the future without having to sell out to Microsoft or Apple.

Just wanna give a HUGE shoutout to the devs and anybody who supports/helps in the KDEConnect project!

Sub $200 (CDN) Linux PC Success Story

So a little while back I decided to get back into tinkering with PC's and wanted to set up a dedicated box for trying out Linux distros. (didn't want to bother with dual booting the family PC)

Eventually I came upon some cheap Thin Clients, and after a little research, figured out they were upgradeable.

So I ended up grabbing a Dell Wyse 5060 Thin Client (check on eBay).
It came with 4GB of RAM and a little 8GB SATA SSD module.

The SSD module uses a laptop style 22 pin connection on the motherboard, but there isn't enough room for a standard 2.5" drive to fit, so I had to use a 22 pin SATA Extension I grabbed off Amazon for a few bucks.


The RAM I didn't intend to touch, but when I popped off the heat shield I saw it was 1x 4GB SO-DIMM, with a second DIMM slot open, so I dropped in another 4GB DIMM that I had from an old laptop that I'd upgraded on the past.


So I'm now sitting with a system that has:

[AMD GX-424CC SoC](https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=AMD+GX-424CC+SOC&id=2291) - (performs similar to a 4th Gen Core i3 on benchmarks, but with a better iGPU)

240GB SSD

8GB RAM

2x DisplayPort

4x USB 2.0

2x USB 3.0

1x Gigabit LAN (looking to add maybe add Wi-Fi and move this box to the living room)





Setup itself wasn't too bad, just had to get into the BIOS (the default password for these from the factory is "Fireport")

Once in I was about to adjust the boot order to get my USB stick to boot and install Linux!

One note for anyone trying this, you'll have to disable LAN boot as even when I changed boot order the box would try to boot from the network... Must be hardcoded in somewhere as its a Thin Client after all.


I'm now running Linux Mint perfectly!
