Kde connect is fantastic!

Im a "casual" linux user, I use Ubuntu, mostly happy with Unity, I generally get my software from the inbuilt repositories or PPAs, I rarely compile from source, Yadda, Yadda. I just gotta say, Kde connect is brilliant!

Recently they must have pushed out an update, and now my phone automatically pauses my youtube videos on my PC when I get a call? I can also pause and play youtube videos on my PC from my phone? I dont need to VNC to my desktop PC, when im watching videos from bed, since I can use the phone to control the playback, and also use the KDE connect application as a keyboard/mouse.

I love feeling as though im living in the future without having to sell out to Microsoft or Apple.

Just wanna give a HUGE shoutout to the devs and anybody who supports/helps in the KDEConnect project!

Sub $200 (CDN) Linux PC Success Story

So a little while back I decided to get back into tinkering with PC's and wanted to set up a dedicated box for trying out Linux distros. (didn't want to bother with dual booting the family PC)

Eventually I came upon some cheap Thin Clients, and after a little research, figured out they were upgradeable.

So I ended up grabbing a Dell Wyse 5060 Thin Client (check on eBay).
It came with 4GB of RAM and a little 8GB SATA SSD module.

The SSD module uses a laptop style 22 pin connection on the motherboard, but there isn't enough room for a standard 2.5" drive to fit, so I had to use a 22 pin SATA Extension I grabbed off Amazon for a few bucks.

The RAM I didn't intend to touch, but when I popped off the heat shield I saw it was 1x 4GB SO-DIMM, with a second DIMM slot open, so I dropped in another 4GB DIMM that I had from an old laptop that I'd upgraded on the past.

So I'm now sitting with a system that has:

[AMD GX-424CC SoC](https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=AMD+GX-424CC+SOC&id=2291) - (performs similar to a 4th Gen Core i3 on benchmarks, but with a better iGPU)

240GB SSD

8GB RAM

2x DisplayPort

4x USB 2.0

2x USB 3.0

1x Gigabit LAN (looking to add maybe add Wi-Fi and move this box to the living room)

Setup itself wasn't too bad, just had to get into the BIOS (the default password for these from the factory is "Fireport")

Once in I was about to adjust the boot order to get my USB stick to boot and install Linux!

One note for anyone trying this, you'll have to disable LAN boot as even when I changed boot order the box would try to boot from the network... Must be hardcoded in somewhere as its a Thin Client after all.

I'm now running Linux Mint perfectly!
Deciding what Distro to try next...

Turn any file storage into a Full Private Cloud - looking for Linux users to try out our app!

Hi everyone!

With my co-founder we've developed an app that gives you your full private cloud/private Dropbox, with no complicated installation, and no server required. Just one app and one storage and that's it. It converts any file storage into a full private cloud/private dropbox. And we're currently looking for Linux beta users!

It's a new kind of app that simplifies the concept of a private cloud. Basically, the entirety of your private cloud is contained inside a single folder called a repository folder. This folder can be stored anywhere: USB hard drive, NAS, cloud file storage, Raspberry Pi, etc... In order to use your private cloud, Duple needs to be able to access your repository folder. On your devices (where Duple is installed), you get a second folder called Duple (inside your "My Documents" folder). This folder contains the readable data, it's where you work with your private cloud: add, modify and remove your files there.

Your data is always at least in two places at the same time: inside the Duple folder (present on every desktop device where Duple is installed) and in the repository folder.

It is so far available on Linux, and we're looking for Linux fans who would be interested in beta testing!

Here's the website: [www.duple.io](https://www.duple.io)

The beta page to download and use the app: [https://beta.duple.io/en/](https://beta.duple.io/en/)

And the documentation (explaining what is Duple, how it works, how to use it): [https://doc.duple.io](https://doc.duple.io)

If you have any questions about Duple, please don't hesitate to ask. Thanks!

Fuchsia on the horizon

I love me some Linux, but I am eying the Fuchsia project suspiciously. It's design seems to align it well for server usage just as much as mobile or desktop (not to mention IoT). Unfortunately it is not a copyleft license...

However, I am wondering how the potential introduction of a micro kernel in the mainstream can change the community of Linux. Hurd has been around for a while, but there isn't much adoption.

Anyway, I'd love a discussion around this. If you're unfamiliar with Fuchsia, check out [https://fuchsia.dev/](https://fuchsia.dev/)
