GTX 1080 tearing with official drivers
Hey guys,
Has anyone encountered screen tearing with Nvidia GPUs with their official drivers?
Compton is installed and full composition is set for all monitors
Edit: happens to me with Ubutu, Fedora, Debian and arch.
Tested with Gnome and KDE.
CPU govorner is set to performance.

Would you pay to have a feature implemented or a bug fixed?
The question is in the noscript.
Whether it's $5 or $5000 depends on you, but I'm trying to find out if you'd be willing to pay at all. Any project.

Performance difference between XFCE and Gnome Shell is Shocking
After using Gnome shell for a long time and after being tired of slow and unresponsive experience across the DE, i tried mate and xfce desktop and finally settled on xubuntu couple of months back.
The performance difference between these two DEs and Gnome Shell is huge. I just can't believe that one DE flies and other crawls using same specs, kernel and graphics stack. I feel bad for stock Ubuntu users, who got moved to it from unity and still using it. I think Gnome will never be same again. In the name of modernization, a major part of it has been destroyed.

Dropbox Brings Back Support For ZFS, XFS, Btrfs And eCryptFS On Linux
Dropbox has partially reverted the change of only supporting Ext4 filesystems on Linux. A Dropbox client update brings back support for ZFS and XFS on 64-bit Linux systems, and eCryptFS and Btrfs on all Linux systems.
Pushback on a Fedora change proposal to update x86_64 micro-architecture
Today on Fedora's devel mailing list, a [Change Proposal](https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/devel@lists.fedoraproject.org/thread/MPFXH4Y5LDC5L2VXWKUHAX3WAKBQXR4U/) to update the x86_64 micro-architecture was presented. The rationale is that since Fedora is still using the K8 micro-architecture (the original AMD64 version from 2003), without 3DNow! or other AMD-specific parts, it doesn't make use of architecture extensions and, as a result, doesn't run as good as it could. The Proposal says to lift the micro-arch to AVX2 level.
This caused a lot of stirrup on the mailing list, as many people chipped in saying that this proposal goes way too high and it would require them to throw away a lot of hardware. It was also pointed out that even though AVX2 was designed in 2013, there are still CPUs **in production** that do not fit this requirement [(link)](https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/devel@lists.fedoraproject.org/message/WBS24VTLEAI455QZOJLDLJ5SB3MREMSK/).
If you'd like to check if your CPU fits this requirement, you can just run:
```
grep 'avx2' /proc/cpuinfo
```
Some suggested solutions were to:
1. Modify the proposal and use some other, less recent baseline.
2. Create a separate "modern x86_64" arch and provide the system in two versions. [(link)](https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/devel@lists.fedoraproject.org/message/SH2IZBES2I3YWOOWTB6REVBQWS3LUCYK/)
3. Reject the proposal outright (duh).
I'm curious about /r/linux's opinion, seeing how every so often one can see here posts praising Linux for working perfectly with old or lower-end hardware.

Monitoring Linux Logs with Kibana and Rsyslog
Hello guys!

Recently, I played a lot with Kibana and I discovered that it was an amazing visualization tool! I managed to bind it with rsyslog, in order to have a complete monitoring dashboard showing all the system logs metrics for your Linux instances.

https://i.redd.it/l7ezllkxcxb31.png

Then, I wrote a complete guide on how to setup ELK with rsyslog to monitor your system.

This extensive guide covers :
\- Key Concepts of Linux Logging
\- What does an actual monitoring architecture looks like
\- Installing the ELK stack on an Ubuntu machine
\- Configuring all the tools in order to have a complete log monitoring pipeline.
\- Illustrated details on how to build a killer dashboard in Kibana.

I hope that you are going to enjoy it guys, it took me quite some time to write this, but I felt that it was worth sharing :)

"hello world!" most likely the worlds dumbest game
[https://imgur.com/zY8QXax](https://imgur.com/zY8QXax)

im in the process of developing a game for programmers. where you look at source code (which sometimes makes sense but others doesnt, just as long as you understand where your supposed to go/what to do thats all im looking for)

it mainly uses a javanoscript style syntax as i feel like its a programming style that both looks like big complicated programming while still being super simple and ubiquitous.

it has pitfalls like recursion, interns and much more planned. its not a game thats meant to be executed, or compiled or anything. its a text based game that you look at the actual code of what the game actually is? i guess is the best way to describe it?

What App Launcher do you use and why?
I've been using XFCE for a long time and the xfce4-appfinder is the only one I've ever used. Which do you use? Why is it your favorite? For those who don't know I'm talking about the program that you use to quickly launch any app installed on your computer.

Is there a way to extend the root partition without using a Live USB?
So me, in my infinite wisdom, allocated only about 35 Gb to my Fedora partition. When it came time to update, I left it a little long and now I need an extra gigabyte to actually be able to download everything to install.
When I went on vacation I forgot my USB key, and am a little too stubborn to buy a new one... So is there any way to extend the root partition without using a live USB with Gparted on it? I have about 50Gb of unallocated space here just waiting.
(I also have a Windows partition if there's a possibility there.)
Thanks in advance!

ArcoLinux 19.7 -> 64 isos to download and try!?
I have headaches just by reading the release notes.

I like what Erik Dubois do *(or try to do)* since several years and he seems to be a nice guy but he's always going in all directions *(same issue with Sardi icons for example)*. ArcoLinux could be great and popular *(Manjaro currently have the "easy Arch derivative" monopoly though)* but IMO having too much stuff is counterproductive:
* newcomers may be lost as they don't know what to choose
* newcomers may be afraid that you don't focus on quality over quantity

Why not just a couple of isos *(for Standard, B, and D)* and a nice installer that asks you what you want in several screens with short denoscriptions?

To be honest I don't care/mind that much, I'm not personally interested by Arco but I can't help thinking it's completely insane and I'm genuinely curious about how other people feel about this ~~madness~~ distro. I'm not asking for the usual "it's for plebs read arch wiki to install because it is the arch way blabla" though.

Is 'firefox' overzealous in the matter of security?
Somehow bittorrent & amule ports were closed. I use 'firefox' to access the router and... no luck: password rejected. I reset the router and try with the factory password... no luck, repeat several times... panic: I could see myself battling with the ISP provider's tech support, telling them that I had Internet but their router was faulty...
Then I notice a crossed padlock in front of the router's address: 'Connection not secure'. I try with 'opera' browser and lo and behold! password accepted! :-)

rpm & deb plus now snaps, flatpaks and applimage... are we expecting too much from devs?
Literally for decades, Linux users have had to beg and plead with companies to create software for our OS. Now, many do. But over the past few years with the addition of Snaps. Flatpaks and AppImages, are we expecting too much from developers?
I can understand a developer releasing their work in a preferred format, say Snap, but invariably, the community starts asking (rather aggressively) for all the other packaging options.
This fragmentation can't be good for the community, can it? You may say 'choice is good', and I agree when referring to a passion project like a desktop environment, but 5 different ways of packaging software seems like just busy-work.
