Monitoring Linux Logs with Kibana and Rsyslog

Hello guys!

Recently, I played a lot with Kibana and I discovered that it was an amazing visualization tool! I managed to bind it with rsyslog, in order to have a complete monitoring dashboard showing all the system logs metrics for your Linux instances.

https://i.redd.it/l7ezllkxcxb31.png

Then, I wrote a complete guide on how to setup ELK with rsyslog to monitor your system.

This extensive guide covers :

\- Key Concepts of Linux Logging

\- What does an actual monitoring architecture looks like

\- Installing the ELK stack on an Ubuntu machine

\- Configuring all the tools in order to have a complete log monitoring pipeline.

\- Illustrated details on how to build a killer dashboard in Kibana.

I hope that you are going to enjoy it guys, it took me quite some time to write this, but I felt that it was worth sharing :)

"hello world!" most likely the worlds dumbest game

im in the process of developing a game for programmers. where you look at source code (which sometimes makes sense but others doesnt, just as long as you understand where your supposed to go/what to do thats all im looking for)

it mainly uses a javanoscript style syntax as i feel like its a programming style that both looks like big complicated programming while still being super simple and ubiquitous.

it has pitfalls like recursion, interns and much more planned. its not a game thats meant to be executed, or compiled or anything. its a text based game that you look at the actual code of what the game actually is? i guess is the best way to describe it?

What App Launcher do you use and why?

I've been using XFCE for a long time and the xfce4-appfinder is the only one I've ever used. Which do you use? Why is it your favorite? For those who don't know I'm talking about the program that you use to quickly launch any app installed on your computer.

Is there a way to extend the root partition without using a Live USB?

So me, in my infinite wisdom, allocated only about 35 Gb to my Fedora partition. When it came time to update, I left it a little long and now I need an extra gigabyte to actually be able to download everything to install.

When I went on vacation I forgot my USB key, and am a little too stubborn to buy a new one... So is there any way to extend the root partition without using a live USB with Gparted on it? I have about 50Gb of unallocated space here just waiting.

(I also have a Windows partition if there's a possibility there.)

Thanks in advance!

ArcoLinux 19.7 -> 64 isos to download and try!?

I have headaches just by reading the release notes.

I like what Erik Dubois do *(or try to do)* since several years and he seems to be a nice guy but he's always going in all directions *(same issue with Sardi icons for example)*. ArcoLinux could be great and popular *(Manjaro currently have the "easy Arch derivative" monopoly though)* but IMO having too much stuff is counterproductive:

* newcomers may be lost as they don't know what to choose
* newcomers may be afraid that you don't focus on quality over quantity

Why not just a couple of isos *(for Standard, B, and D)* and a nice installer that asks you what you want in several screens with short denoscriptions?

To be honest I don't care/mind that much, I'm not personally interested by Arco but I can't help thinking it's completely insane and I'm genuinely curious about how other people feel about this ~~madness~~ distro. I'm not asking for the usual "it's for plebs read arch wiki to install because it is the arch way blabla" though.

Is 'firefox' overzealous in the matter of security?

Somehow bittorrent & amule ports were closed. I use 'firefox' to access the router and... no luck: password rejected. I reset the router and try with the factory password... no luck, repeat several times... panic: I could see myself battling with the ISP provider's tech support, telling them that I had Internet but their router was faulty...

Then I notice a crossed padlock in front of the router's address: 'Connection not secure'. I try with 'opera' browser and lo and behold! password accepted! :-)

rpm & deb plus now snaps, flatpaks and applimage... are we expecting too much from devs?

Literally for decades, Linux users have had to beg and plead with companies to create software for our OS. Now, many do. But over the past few years with the addition of Snaps. Flatpaks and AppImages, are we expecting too much from developers?

I can understand a developer releasing their work in a preferred format, say Snap, but invariably, the community starts asking (rather aggressively) for all the other packaging options.

This fragmentation can't be good for the community, can it? You may say 'choice is good', and I agree when referring to a passion project like a desktop environment, but 5 different ways of packaging software seems like just busy-work.

Share desktop layout for single/multiple programs so that someone using a similar screen set up could immediately open up the same layout?

Hello everyone,

I have a question regarding personalization of the desktop when certain applications or mixtures of applications are on screen. Lets say for example I want to program in android studio. Each time I open the program I would like a few other programs to open as well and to go to the correct size and location that I have decided. Programs such as firefox, gitkraken, or maybe some Cheatsheet PDFs?

1. Is there anyway to store layouts of open programs on your desktop?
2. Can I have a toggle or dropdown menu of potential layouts to transition between during my workflow?

Thanks in advanced!

Any solution to the multi-process ETA estimate?

Here's one example of the situation: You're downloading three big files from a repository. At some intermediate point the ETA (estimated time they'll arrive complete) is 20minutes, 1hr16min, 2hr23min. But that's the ETA of each without regard to the first file no longer dividing the bandwidth after 20minues. Has there been any already accomplished effort to establish a "sequentially dependent ETA" for the N-1 files presumed to take longer than soonest one completed? Particularly to re-estimate the time necessary to complete the the final Nth file?

Obviously this could be an application for any general aggregate process completion involving one critical resource rather than just files downloading. Perhaps something in the kernel source? Thank you!

Building a Gold Standard Red Hat Linux image

Hello linux guru's. I am a linux n00b. For the first time in 5 years our company has finally agreed to let linux in our environment...wahoo!! In the windows world we have an image that we deploy our servers from. I am looking for recommendations and/or documentation for building out a linux gold standard image. What does your build documentation contain? What are some standard configurations you have? What are some considerations to think about?

grapheneX: Automated System Hardening Framework

https://i.redd.it/zi6uxjrom3c31.gif

In computing, hardening is usually the process of securing a system by reducing its surface of vulnerability, which is larger when a system performs more functions; in principle a single-function system is more secure than a multipurpose one. Reducing available ways of attack typically includes changing default passwords, the removal of unnecessary software, unnecessary usernames or logins, and the disabling or removal of unnecessary services.

grapheneX project aims to provide a framework for securing the system with hardening commands automatically. It's designed for the end user as well as the Linux and Windows developers due to the interface options. (interactive shell/web interface) In addition to that, grapheneX can be used to secure a web server/application.

Currently, grapheneX support the hardening sections below. Each of these namespaces contains more than one module.

• Firewall• User• Network• Services• Kernel• Filesystem• Other
