You fit the Siberian shaman job denoscription if you can talk to spirits. Shamanism is one of the main religions in Buryatia. People come to shamans to ask for help - helping them to quit drinking, getting married or a piece of life advice.

Shamanic rituals are impressive. Beating an animal-skin drum, repeating mantras, speaking in a frightening voice and entering a trance-like state may scare anyone. If you’d like to learn more about Buryat shamans and how to become one, check out our documentary.

Child Prodigy
#video #Russia

Alisa Teplyakova may have been the most talked-about child in Russia. At the age of 9, she became the youngest student of psychology at the Moscow State University.

Alisa had been homeschooled by her parents, who came up with what they call a ‘revolutionary’ teaching method for their seven children. Alisa’s father, Evgeniy, claims Alisa has already read all the textbooks and he’s convinced that his daughter could finish the course in just two years.

However, their story provoked heated debate in the media, some called it a ‘dangerous’ experience and many psychologists say that too much pressure can be harmful to children.

Watch our new documentary for more of Alisa’s story and to hear what other child prodigies have to say about their experience.

In the 90s, the Russian city of Novgorod was called the "Russian Chicago" for its extremely high crime rate.

The country's political instability after the collapse of the Soviet Union and economic decline led to a surge in violence. Doing business became life-threatening. Novgorod was hit the hardest because of its proximity to Moscow and Saint Petersburg. The criminal activity from the two capitals added to its own.

Aleksandr Sadriyev was a very successful businessman, well known and respected by both the people and the authorities of Novgorod. His retail chain was doing well and invoked envy from the criminal circles who wanted a share of his profits.

However, Sadriyev was adamant, and tragedy did happen — he was murdered, and his apartment robbed. Anastasia, then a high school graduate, was convinced that sooner or later the killers would be found. And they were, after 24 years.

Tune in for the premiere of My Father's Murder: Solved.

It's believed that the crested ibis has existed for 60 million years. The large bird was once a common sight in China, the Korean Peninsula, Japan and Russia, its shape was deeply rooted in Asian culture.

However, the population declined dramatically, and the species vanished from Korea, Russia and Japan. In the 1980s, Chinese conservation experts searched for the crested ibises in the Qinling Mountains and found the last seven of the species.

The crested ibis is now on the road to recovery. Around 5,000 of them are living in the wild and captivity. Find out more about this magnificent bird in the new season of, This is China.

Just look how extraordinary the snow looks on the dunes of the Sahara Desert. Algerian photographer Karim Bouchetata was lucky to catch the rare phenomena as any snowfall melts quickly.

It's the fifth time in 42 years temperatures have dropped, and snow has fallen on the Saharan town of Ain Sefra in Algeria. The desert saw snow in 2021, 2018, 2016 and again in 1979. Though January is one of the coldest months there, it's exceptional this time. It may be hard to believe the desert, which has seen highs of 58C, now has overnight temperatures reaching -2C.

2021 saw an abysmal record in Russia for wildfires, with 17 mln hectares of forest destroyed. It's only one of the problems that cause deforestation. Illegal logging, slash-and-burn agriculture, contraband forest exports add to the disturbingly rapid forest extinction.

Uncontrolled logging disrupts ecosystems resulting in landslides and soil erosion. Dry and damaged trees carry pests that can travel long distances and infect healthy areas. While volunteers and WWF reps are struggling against illegal activity, it's not enough to save the remaining woodland.

Deforestation is a big issue. But, unfortunately, by the 21st century, half of the Earth forest had already been destroyed. And regardless of efforts to rescue and protect the remaining woodland, the prospects are bleak. Watch the premiere of Forests Under Attack right now on RT Documentary.

Avangard is one of the world's oldest manufacturers of anti-aircraft missiles and turned 80 in January 2022. This is where guided missiles are assembled for Russia's renowned S-400 Triumph air defence system. RT's Yulia Shapovalova toured the facility to see behind the scenes.

The plant was built in the middle of the Second World War. There are dozens of workshops at Avangard, and most of them are secret or top-secret. Russia's S-400 Triumph air defence system relies on the products made there. The system's primary uniqueness lies in its guided missiles.

The S-400 systems are supplied to the Russian Army and exported as part of military-technical cooperation with China, India and Turkey.

On this day, 74 years ago, Mahatma Gandhi was fatally shot in Delhi. A Hindu zealot killed India’s most revered leader. A year before Gandhi’s assassination, India won its independence from Britain but was partitioned into Hindu-majority India and Muslim-majority Pakistan.

Religious violence immediately broke out. Gandhi appealed for peace by fasting and praying. Gandhi’s killer, Nathuram Godse, accused the ‘Father of the Nation’ of having betrayed Hindus by being too tolerant to Muslims and blamed the bloodshed on Gandhi.

To learn more about Gandhi’s life and legacy, check out our documentary.
