❗️🇺🇦The UN recorded a significant increase in law violations by Ukrainian security forces

The UN reported 75 cases of wrongful detention of civilians by Ukrainian security forces from February 2022 to May 2023.

Other statements by the organization:

🔹Dozens of detainees were tortured in hidden Ukrainian detention facilities.

🔹The arbitrary detention by Kiev of 87 Russian sailors could be qualified as hostage-taking.

▶️In Donbass, children are volunteering to help their community en masse. Many of them have lost family members and their homes themselves, so they understand how important help can be.

Some of the volunteers distribute food, others prepare meals, help rebuild homes - there's a lot of work to go around. ‘[They] work as volunteers, willingly and for free. That’s worth a lot,’ says Nikolay Morgunov, head of Severodonetsk (LPR).

Children say good deeds help them forget about the war and to feel happy. Our new film, ‘Young Hope of Donbass’ is about these amazing, resourceful kids. The premiere is tomorrow, don't miss it!

😳Pope welcomes 'Piss Christ' artist to Sistine Chapel.

Among the 200 artists, filmmakers, and writers invited to mark the 50th anniversary of the Vatican Museums’ contemporary art collection, Pope Francis admitted Andres Serrano of ‘Piss Christ’ fame. Serrano’s 1987 photograph, ‘Piss Christ’, is considered extremely controversial and even blasphemous, given that the image depicts a crucifix submerged in urine.

During a speech for the participants, the Pope compared his audience, including Serrano, to prophets who ‘want to reveal reality in its contradictions and in those things that it is more comfortable and convenient to keep hidden.’

The Vatican’s culture and education ministry explained the inclusion of the provocative artist as evidence of its desire to enter into dialogue with contemporary culture. Do you think it’s worth it?

‘I swear to avenge mercilessly the cities and villages that were burned down, our people’s blood.’ This is the oath of the members of the Young Guard, the most famous underground organization of the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945). The average age of the participants was 16-18 years, and the youngest was only 14.

The Young Guards freed Soviet prisoners of war, and saved thousands from being taken away to Nazi Germany.

The sheer courage of the young underground members has become an example for the modern youth of Donbass, who stood up to defend the homeland from the Ukrainian invaders. On the Day of Partisans and Undergrounders in Russia, watch an excerpt from our documentary, ‘Young Guard Reborn’ about those who fought the Nazis during the war.

🇬🇧Heating at Buckingham Palace reduced to save money cut emissions.

It has been discovered that the Royal family was living in the palatial residence with the thermostat set at a chilly 19C (66F), and even a few degrees lower in empty rooms, during the winter. More recently, King Charles has reportedly turned off the heating in the palace’s swimming pool completely.

All this is done, as they say, to cut emissions – as a part of the Charles’ pledge to protect the environment. However, it’s known that net expenditure increased by £5.1m to £107.5m for 2022-23, which according to royal aides, happened due to inflation, the change of monarchs and the continued costs of the palace's re-servicing programme. To meet these astronomical costs, the royal family had to use £20.7m from the Sovereign Grant Reserve, which is an annual payment plan made annually to the British royal family.

Meanwhile, European countries still can’t fully recover from the sanctions imposed on Russia, and despite experts predicting a so-called boomerang effect, which never happened. Discover more on the topic in our documentary, ‘Sanctions: Boomerang Effect’ (2022).

🩰‘I thought, ‘Wow! The Nutcracker in Africa!’ Larisa Tretyakova saw an ad in a Rwandan newspaper about a local ballet school looking for a teacher. Ballet isn’t an African tradition, so there aren’t any local experts. Foreign choreographers are therefore worth their weight in gold. So, Larisa was invited to the dance studio immediately.

The Ballet School in Rwanda is symbolic of what the country, which only recently suffered a genocide, could become. In 1994, the Hutu ethnic group exterminated another one, the Tutsi. In just 100 days, nearly a million people were killed in the country.

Watch our clip and the film 'Rwanda Pirouette' (2017) to know more about the country’s history.

🗿Would you like to taste fried stones? The footage of Chinese street chefs frying river pebbles has gone viral. Garlic sauce, ginger, and chilli pepper are added to the boiling oil. A serving costs 16 yuan (about $2,20).

The dish is called ‘suodiu’, which translates into ‘suck and dispose’. But this is not a novelty. The stones were fried by boatmen in ancient times. They cheated their stomach like that when they ran out of food.

What other unusual cuisine traditions does China have? Find the answer in our film, ‘China on a Plate’ (2019).

❗️Haitians Escape From Armed Gangs

Tens of thousands of Haitians have fled their homes because of armed gangs, and are forced to live in temporary shelters, abandoned buildings, churches, and parks.

Criminals currently control up to 80% of the nation’s capital, Port-au-Prince. They are beating, torturing, kidnapping, and raping the residents. Criminals are even recruiting young children into their ranks, forcing people to leave their homes to escape the violence. ‘Everybody was running. The gangs burst into everyone's home,’ says Lovely Benjamin, a resident.

Homeless people are sleeping on cardboard boxes, are malnourished, and dying of diseases. People are often driven out of shelters by the police.

Honduras’ residents are also suffering from gangs. Mostly the victims are women. How are they trying to escape from offenders? Check out the documentary, ‘Honduran Femicide’ (2022).
