⏺ 96 Lives in Hawaii Lost in Deadliest U.S. Wildfires in a Century

The death toll continues to rise, with over 1,000 people still unaccounted for. The fires have been raging across Maui for almost a week, and remain out of control.

The Hawaii governor said it was a ‘fire hurricane’ with gusting 80 mph winds and ‘1,000-degree heat’. However, the island's 400 sirens failed to function during these catastrophic events, causing outrage and questions among residents. The governor claims the telecommunications were destroyed.

At least 2,000 homes were destroyed, resulting in $6 billion in damages, according to Maui Police Chief John Pelletier.

Western sanctions have not hit Russia's economy as hard as many politicians in the EU and the US had originally hoped. It is predicted that in the coming year, Russia's gross domestic product could return to the level it was at before the conflict in Ukraine. The federal government wants to retaliate.
According to CDU foreign policy chief Roderich Kiesewetter, the biggest problem is that Western sanctions against Russia continue to be circumvented through third countries such as Armenia, Georgia or Kazakhstan and Hong Kong.

📝 "It was clear from the beginning that sanctions are not a sprint but a marathon," says Kiesewetter, "but sanctions will only work if they are implemented in a credible way. So far, they haven't."
