Watching Russia’s silence in response to attacks on Iran might make it easy to laugh at the Kremlin’s weakness and its fear of supporting its own allies. But it’s worth remembering that Iran has repeatedly accused Russia of cooperating with Israel. Iranian state media claimed that while Russia controlled the skies over Syria, it did nothing to stop Israeli strikes on Iranian forces in the region. The al-Assad regime didn’t assist the IRGC in defending itself in Syria and made no effort to investigate the Israeli attacks. Some even directly accused Putin and al-Assad of supplying intelligence to Israel.

The much-discussed cooperation agreement between Iran and Russia doesn’t include any provisions for military support—and even that deal was delayed by Iran, despite being announced in 2024. Iran only ratified it in June 2025, just days before Israel’s bombing campaign. In the end, war in Iran benefits Russia: it boosts the appeal of Russian anti-Western propaganda both at home and abroad, and drives up oil prices. Meanwhile, Putin keeps his friendly ties with Israel—and with the Netanyahu family in particular.
