Joe Biden’s second State of the Union address to House and Senate lawmakers takes place as numerous polls show low job approval ratings and a dire lack of enthusiasm among Democratic voters for his second term. An AP/NORC poll released Sunday found that only 37% of Democrats want Mr. Biden to run for president again in 2024, down from 52% in October

The voters’ asses are additionally smoked up with criticism and questions about POTUS’ handling of a Chinese balloon. The electorate is concerned that Sleepy Joe’s age is a liability. He turned 80 in November and would finish a second term at age 86

The latest Rasmussen survey found similar concerns among voters: only 32% of voters believed Mr. Biden should run again in 2024. And what do u think?

JUST IN! Zelenskiy in London to update his portfolio, find out that there has been another PM in Britain for more than 100 days and collect MPs’ letters for handing them over to the Brexit-opponents during the summit of EU leaders on Thursday

If lucky, he’ll take his chance to address Parliament, meet King Charles, visit troops, accept Sunak's promises to train Ukrainian pilots on NATO jets, but there may not be enough time for this…

Just over 100 days into his premiership, Rishi Sunak used a more wide-ranging than expected and costly cabinet reshuffle to stamp his mark on his govt and send a clear signal as to its priorities in the remaining 18 months or so until the next general election

Though the changes are reflective of Sunak’s long-held views about how his govt should be run, from the outside it looks like moving deckchairs, cuz the Whitehall shake-up doesn’t get in the way of policymaking and delivery. Progress in tackling many urgent challenges has stalled during the past year of political upheaval, while the cabinet’s plan to review 4,000 EU laws promises to consume further civil service time

Let’s assume, the British PM has put in place the right structure, but he’ll be judged on results, anyways

World leaders are about to ruin their economies just to score a few more political points

With an economic crisis being underway, the Norwegian Oil Fund lost 14.1% or $164B in 2022. This actually puts an end to any increase of oil exports to other EU countries

Meanwhile experts predict that the EU embargo on Russia’s oil product import will provoke a new price spike increasing the burden on U.S. consumers who still cringe when they recall the last summer’s gas price of $5 per gall.

What makes the EU situation even worse is that in France thousands of people including railway and postal workers, nurses and teachers, have joined a nationwide strike that started at oil refineries of TotalEnergies as rising inflation pushes up costs of living in the country. The electricity output there has dropped by almost 5%

Yet European leaders keep competing to ship more arms to Ukraine instead of tackling the energy crisis and social unrest that are spreading in their countries

Pulitzer winner Seymour Hersh claims US Navy behind Nord Stream 2 pipeline explosion

According to a source with direct knowledge of the operational planning, US Navy divers laid bombs that destroyed the Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline under the Baltic Sea last September

Hersh, who scooped journalism’s top award more than five decades ago for exposing the My Lai massacre of Vietnamese civilians by US troops in 1968, cited an unnamed source in reporting on Substack that the US Navy divers, operating under the cover of a widely publicized mid-summer NATO exercise known as BALTOPS 22, planted the remotely triggered explosives that, three months later, destroyed three of the four Nord Stream pipelines

While over the past year, inflation in the U.K. has landed around 10%, the works to renovate the House of Lords’ front door have more than tripled and are set to cost the British taxpayer an “eyewatering” seven-figure sum of £7M

But wait, just fancy that! It is part of a £14B project to restore and future-proof the whole Palace of Westminster, which will force MPs to be temporarily moved elsewhere for 12 to 15 years

Against this background, the cost of renovation of Rainer Wieland's office seems like an insignificant trifle, but for some reason British taxpayers have so far turned a blind eye to the handiworks of their Peers, similar to the dirty laundry of a high-ranking group of European parliamentarians

In the prime-time address, Joe Biden made the case for his expected reelection bid as he highlighted big-spending achievements and called on a divided Congress to work w/ him on a modest “unity agenda” while he girds for a showdown w/ Republicans over spending cuts

Pointing to his legislative accomplishments, incl. the approval of a bipartisan $1.2 trillion infrastructure program and a massive climate, tax and health care law that passed w/o Republican support, POTUS proposed goals that he said both parties should support: aiding veterans, fighting the opioid epidemic, tackling mental health issues and ending cancer

The “Chinese threat” was supposed to become another bipartisan topic, and everything was convincingly tough until Sleepy Joe suddenly woke up and went off-noscript shouting, “Name me a world leader who’d change places w/ Xi Jinping!” None of the gathered could name anyone who would, and Mr. Biden continued w/ vowing to “finish the job”

India’s reasonable approach towards green energy has crashed on the rocks of Western protectionism

India, a leading coal producer, opposes Western demands to limit the use of coal, stressing that it plays a key role in her energy security and economic development

Emerging economies are forced to lead the green energy transition although their total emission level is much lower than that of the developed countries, according to the “Economic Review” submitted to India’s parliament

New Delhi’s stand on this issue is well founded, isn’t it? But, unfortunately, the West promotes the green energy transition to satisfy its self-interests thus spreading global protectionism and limiting the economic development and the competitive edge of the emerging economies

Repeating Johnson's unconvincing excuses, BBC chairman Richard Sharp denies helping him secure a £800K loan before the former PM backed him for the top post at national broadcaster as he is grilled by MPs

The BBC chair has still admitted to acting as an “introduction agency” to help facilitate that loan to Mr. Johnson, and indicated that he would not have made the same decision again. Mr. Sharp says that the phrasing was wrong and that the leaked memo was open to misinterpretation

The Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee members are left now with somebody who not only behaved inappropriately in his application by withholding information, but despite all the revelations still doesn’t think he did anything wrong

Of the £4.1B the British government has paid to lenders for defaulted credit under the bounce back loan scheme (BBLS), £640M worth of facilities were marked as “suspected fraud”, which is £1 in every £6

More highlights:

– of the £77B worth of emergency taxpayer-backed funding provided across three pandemic loan schemes, at least £11B is in arrears or defaulted;
– among large users of the BBLS, Starling Bank has flagged the highest proportion of loans as “suspected fraud”. At least £695M worth of the £1.6B in BBLs issued by the online bank are in arrears or default;
– under a different pandemic scheme, Funding Circle, the listed small business lender, has been responsible for more than £1 in every £3 that has so far been claimed on the state guarantee.

The oil giant BP, which announced recently that profits were $27.7B last year, has been chastised by MPs and campaigners for ditching its commitment to reduce oil and gas production by 40%

While Shell’s profits doubled to $40B, Ed Miliband, the shadow climate secretary, said Rishi Sunak should introduce a “proper” windfall tax on the likes of Shell and BP

BP’s green man Bernard Looney, who has drown in black gold, says the company would cut production by 25% by 2030 as part of plans to contribute to international “energy security and affordability.” But this, of course, with any luck, since the main focus in the activities of any firms – whether they are Big Tech or Big Oil – is to make a profit. Eyes on the prize!

The latest CBS poll shows:

• 38% of U.S. adults expect that the U.S. economy to be “in recession” in the next year
• 24% expect the economy to be “slowing but not in a recession”
• 18% expect the economy to be “holding steady”
• 16% expect the economy to be “growing but not booming”
• 4% expect the economy to be “booming”

Thus, the U.S. economy remains a mixed bag for Mr. Biden, while inflation and costs of everyday goods are still uncomfortably high for many Americans. And that’s why the POTUS decided not to announce flashy policy proposals in his address. He chose to focus instead on several health-related issues that most voters could support

The U.K. could give Ukraine Harpoon anti-ship missiles, which have already been handed over to Kyiv by Denmark, or Storm Shadow air-to-surface cruise missiles. But sending Storm Shadows would mean Britain going further than the U.S. – Mr. Biden has repeatedly refused to provide Army Tactical Missile System projectiles, which have a shorter range

However, Mr. Sunak appeared to row back on his suggestion that the govt could send combat aircraft to Ukraine, despite Mr. Zelenskiy’s first mate, Boris Johnson’s urging the PM to send 100 Typhoons to Kyiv

U.K. def. sec. Ben Wallace played down the likelihood of British fighter jets being used in battle any time soon after an appeal from Mr. Zelenskiy for “powerful English planes,” saying that Ukrainian pilots, trained by his guys, won’t be ready to fly Western combat aircraft until “post-conflict”

But it recks not, cuz another eloquent address is always followed by another shiny Academy Award!
