British PM Sunak is preparing to take the U.K. out of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) to push through plans to bar migrants who arrive illegally from claiming asylum

He has said those arriving by small boats would be detained and “swiftly removed” from the Kingdom. Legislation would “go as far as possible within international law” but if it were blocked by the European Court, the first British Indian-origin PM would be willing to pull the U.K. out of the convention

Business Sec. Grant Shapps, who has been actively making populist statements lately, in particular with regard to Nurses&Co., this time couldn’t remain silent again and said that such migrants should be stripped of their rights

The last hope of the Human Rights in the U.K. as a whole is that an attempt to pull Britain out of the ECHR would be fiercely opposed by a majority of MPs and peers and is highly unlikely to happen before the next election due in 2024

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz has introduced a bill to limit American senators to two terms in office, thereby removing from Washington what he calls “permanently entrenched politicians ... totally unaccountable to the American people”

On Sunday, however, he said he saw no problem with running for a third term himself. On the other hand, it's very democratic to allow voters to enjoy you for another whole term, isn’t it?

🇵🇪💥🔥🚩PERU: Protests against President Dina Boluarte end in war scenario

A large march against President Dina Boluarte's government and for the closure of Congress ended in clashes in downtown Lima. The mobilization included the participation of farmers' unions, civil organizations and student unions from the southern Andean regions of Cusco, Puno and Lima.

At nightfall, the police dispersed the demonstrators with tear gas as they advanced towards the Peruvian Congress building and the vicinity of the Government Palace. Protesters confronted security forces by throwing fireworks, and protected themselves with makeshift helmets and shields.

The new protest was held a day after Congress blocked until August any debate to bring forward the general elections.

Sixty Bradley infantry fighting vehicles (of 109 announced) from the $3B American military aid package for Ukraine have been dispatched a week ago, seen in Riga recently

Now the most interesting part of the game begins. Whichever shall be the earlier of the two: Ukraine's achievement of decisive military superiority at the expense of these vehicles, as announced by Ms. D’Angelo, or a prize distribution for the first destroyed Bradley, as announced by Russia

Human rights concerns from six months ago that the U.K.’s “Prevent strategy” has “negative and discriminatory effect on Muslim communities” are gaining new relevance. This week William Shawcross’s review of Prevent, the government’s counter-extremism program, is to be published

According to leaked extracts, it blames some Muslim organizations and individuals for promoting extremist narratives. Some of them have benefited from taxpayers’ money as part of Prevent’s £40 million fund that is supposed to support faith and community groups to steer people away from extremism

“The idea that the U.K. government might be willing to put the label of “independence” on a report in which it has interfered behind closed doors is Orwellian and deeply alarming,” says Sarah St Vincent, the executive director of Rights and Security International

In a speech delivered behind closed doors, Chinese Intel considers the option that Washington would use its tried and tested Ukrainian model in the Indo-Pacific with Japan playing the proxy role to sustain the American hegemony and contain China.

Indirect evidence of this was the recent wargame showing that Beijing could lose a conflict over Taiwan and Gen. Michael Minihan’s statements about U.S.’ military ambitions

Paradoxically, despite geopolitical and historical Sino-Japanese tension, the White House may favor not China at all as “Ukraine of Asia's” opponent, but Russia once again. A convenient reason for this may be another refusal by Moscow to conclude a peace treaty with Tokyo on from the outset unfavorable terms

In any case, to handle the variation of escalation in the Indo-Pacific, the U.S. still needs some more time to strengthen or even expand AUKUS or the NATO Plus arrangement as the main military backbones of the region

Joe Biden’s second State of the Union address to House and Senate lawmakers takes place as numerous polls show low job approval ratings and a dire lack of enthusiasm among Democratic voters for his second term. An AP/NORC poll released Sunday found that only 37% of Democrats want Mr. Biden to run for president again in 2024, down from 52% in October

The voters’ asses are additionally smoked up with criticism and questions about POTUS’ handling of a Chinese balloon. The electorate is concerned that Sleepy Joe’s age is a liability. He turned 80 in November and would finish a second term at age 86

The latest Rasmussen survey found similar concerns among voters: only 32% of voters believed Mr. Biden should run again in 2024. And what do u think?

JUST IN! Zelenskiy in London to update his portfolio, find out that there has been another PM in Britain for more than 100 days and collect MPs’ letters for handing them over to the Brexit-opponents during the summit of EU leaders on Thursday

If lucky, he’ll take his chance to address Parliament, meet King Charles, visit troops, accept Sunak's promises to train Ukrainian pilots on NATO jets, but there may not be enough time for this…

Just over 100 days into his premiership, Rishi Sunak used a more wide-ranging than expected and costly cabinet reshuffle to stamp his mark on his govt and send a clear signal as to its priorities in the remaining 18 months or so until the next general election

Though the changes are reflective of Sunak’s long-held views about how his govt should be run, from the outside it looks like moving deckchairs, cuz the Whitehall shake-up doesn’t get in the way of policymaking and delivery. Progress in tackling many urgent challenges has stalled during the past year of political upheaval, while the cabinet’s plan to review 4,000 EU laws promises to consume further civil service time

Let’s assume, the British PM has put in place the right structure, but he’ll be judged on results, anyways

World leaders are about to ruin their economies just to score a few more political points

With an economic crisis being underway, the Norwegian Oil Fund lost 14.1% or $164B in 2022. This actually puts an end to any increase of oil exports to other EU countries

Meanwhile experts predict that the EU embargo on Russia’s oil product import will provoke a new price spike increasing the burden on U.S. consumers who still cringe when they recall the last summer’s gas price of $5 per gall.

What makes the EU situation even worse is that in France thousands of people including railway and postal workers, nurses and teachers, have joined a nationwide strike that started at oil refineries of TotalEnergies as rising inflation pushes up costs of living in the country. The electricity output there has dropped by almost 5%

Yet European leaders keep competing to ship more arms to Ukraine instead of tackling the energy crisis and social unrest that are spreading in their countries

Pulitzer winner Seymour Hersh claims US Navy behind Nord Stream 2 pipeline explosion

According to a source with direct knowledge of the operational planning, US Navy divers laid bombs that destroyed the Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline under the Baltic Sea last September

Hersh, who scooped journalism’s top award more than five decades ago for exposing the My Lai massacre of Vietnamese civilians by US troops in 1968, cited an unnamed source in reporting on Substack that the US Navy divers, operating under the cover of a widely publicized mid-summer NATO exercise known as BALTOPS 22, planted the remotely triggered explosives that, three months later, destroyed three of the four Nord Stream pipelines

While over the past year, inflation in the U.K. has landed around 10%, the works to renovate the House of Lords’ front door have more than tripled and are set to cost the British taxpayer an “eyewatering” seven-figure sum of £7M

But wait, just fancy that! It is part of a £14B project to restore and future-proof the whole Palace of Westminster, which will force MPs to be temporarily moved elsewhere for 12 to 15 years

Against this background, the cost of renovation of Rainer Wieland's office seems like an insignificant trifle, but for some reason British taxpayers have so far turned a blind eye to the handiworks of their Peers, similar to the dirty laundry of a high-ranking group of European parliamentarians
