Concern about immigration, non-EU in particular, has risen in the U.K. in recent months. Migration now ranks fourth in a long-standing “issues index” produced by Ipsos. British voters explain that their main discontent lies “not in the quantity, but in the quality” of migrants. At a meeting with food manufacturers last week, Jeremy Hunt, the British chancellor, said he’d back an increase in interest rates if it curbed higher prices and soaring inflation – even if that risked plunging the U.K. into recession
Meanwhile, the consumer prices index of inflation remains high at 8.7%. Food prices are expected to keep rising, having already increased by 19.1% in the year to March
And a govt plan to encourage supermarkets to impose 1970s-style price caps on food staples to help w/ rising costs are a “harebrained gimmick” that would push inflation on to other products and cut competition, industry bosses and MPs have warned. But who even cares?!
