BREAKING! Europe Enters Stagflation

The European Central Bank (ECB) raised interest rates to the highest level in more than two decades, as policymakers continued their campaign to stamp out inflation they said was “projected to remain too high for too long”

ECB officials lifted rates by a quarter of a percentage point, putting the deposit rate at 3.5%, the highest since 2001. The policymakers revised up their inflation projections for the next three years, forecasting price growth to average 5.4%, much above target in two years’ time, at 2.2%

Euro zone inflation soared into double-digit territory last year but has nearly halved since, even if price growth remains uncomfortably high, particularly for food and services

Sunak’s Asylum Pledge Came Unachievable

A report into Britain’s asylum system found that the Home Office failed to meet its target to secure enough accommodation for asylum seekers

In March last year it set an “ambitious” target to find 500 additional beds a week by October, but that goal was reduced to 350 beds per week between April 2023 and March 2025. Moreover, the Home Office overspent its asylum budget by £2.2B last year, largely attributed to the huge costs of accommodating migrants in hotels. Officials spent about £3.6B on asylum support costs in 2022/23, nearly double the year before

Significant shortcomings in the productivity of staff processing asylum claims were also highlighted, w/ only a fifth of caseworkers deciding claims fully trained, which has made Sunak’s pledge to clear a backlog of nearly 100K old asylum claims unachievable and has inadvertently fuelled a greater logjam of newer claims
