Advice for Beginner Imams Leading Tarawih and Qiyam Prayers

First:

It is essential to emphasize sincerity of intention and purpose, while being mindful of the ways in which Shaytān may encourage showing-off and self-admiration.

Second:

One must understand that leading the Muslims in prayer is both an honor from one perspective and a responsibility from another.

Third:

The imam must acquire proper knowledge of the rulings related to prayer and its method in accordance with the Sunnah. He should not step forward to lead the people unless he has studied these matters thoroughly so that he may lead them in the prayer of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.

Fourth:

He must have learned the proper recitation of the Qur’an from qualified teachers and be proficient in its recognized modes of recitation.

Fifth:

He should be cautious of common mistakes that disturb the worshippers, summarized as follows, with an emphasis on the most important ones:

Raising the voice excessively in recitation and takbir to the point that it becomes disruptive.

Lowering the voice too much in takbir, especially in sujud, making it difficult for people to hear the transition, particularly for women praying behind him.

Ensuring his takbirs align with his movements, rather than preceding them. It is incorrect to say takbir while still in sujud or ruku‘ and after completing them. Rather, the takbir should coincide with the movement, neither preceding nor following it. This helps inform the congregation that the transition has occurred in sync with the takbir.

Reciting correctly without imitating or forcing oneself to mimic a specific reciter unless the recitation itself is valid and well-established.

May Allah reward everyone with goodness.

💎Contemplation Insights; Day 9: Denoscription of the Hypocrites.

A Core Theme of Surah al-Tawbah is repentance, as indicated by its name and mentioned throughout the Surah. Another core theme is the denoscription of the hypocrites. The connection between the two: Although they are the worst of creation, Allah invited them to His mercy on the condition that they repent.

The section describing them begins at around verse 45. Below are some insights from the initial verses.

[See Surah Al-Tawbah (9:45-47)]

[THE HYPOCRITES EXPECT TO BE EXEMPTED FROM WORKING FOR THE GOOD OF THE UMMAH]

“Those who believe in Allah and the Last Day do not ask your permission to be exempted from striving with their wealth and their lives” (Qur’an 9:44).

Al-Sa’dī says:

It is stated that those who truly believe in Allah and the Last Day do not seek permission to forgo striving with their wealth and lives. This is because their strong desire for goodness and their faith compel them to engage in the struggle without requiring external encouragement, let alone asking for exemption without a valid excuse.
[Al-Sa‘di, 338–339]

[A LACK OF PREPARATION SHOWS A LACK OF SINCERITY & RESOLVE]

“And had they truly intended to go forth, they would have prepared for it with due preparation. But Allah disliked their departure, so He held them back, and it was said: ‘Remain with those who stay behind’” (Qur’an 9:46).

Al Qurtubi said:

That is, if they had genuinely intended to strive in the path of Allah, they would have made the necessary preparations for travel. Their lack of preparation is therefore a clear indication of their intent to remain behind.
[Al-Qurtubi, 10/229]

[THE HYPOCRITES PLANT SEEDS OF DISCORD & DESTROY MORALE]
“Had they gone forth with you, they would have only increased you in ruin and would have hurried about among you, seeking to sow discord among you, and among you are some who listen to them. And Allah is Knowing of the wrongdoers” (Qur’an 9:47).

Al Baghawi said:

“Had they gone forth” refers to the hypocrites. “Among you” means along with you. “They would have only increased you in ruin” means they would have brought corruption and harm. The corruption here refers to instilling cowardice and weakening the believers by exaggerating dangers. “And they would have hurried about among you” means they would have moved swiftly “seeking to sow discord among you” by spreading enmity and hatred among you through gossip and passing tales from one person to another.
[Al-Baghawi, 2/289]

💎Deep Reflection on Worries Increases Them, Not Lessens Them

Excessive thinking about worries does not decrease them but rather amplifies them. This, in turn, leads a person into further depression, isolation, and mistakes.

The first steps in addressing this issue include:

1. Reflecting on Allah’s blessings that are already present instead of being preoccupied with what is missing.

2. Supplication and seeking forgiveness, as the Prophet ﷺ used to pray: “O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and sorrow.” Supplication is among the greatest means of relieving distress and grief.

3. Certainty that every problem has either a solution or a reward—if the problem cannot be resolved, the believer knows that patience will bring reward.

4. Focusing on the present moment without worrying about the future, as the Prophet ﷺ said: “Strive for what benefits you, seek help from Allah, and do not be helpless.”

5. Taking the right and beneficial steps, as this is an essential part of placing trust in Allah.

6. Having a good opinion of Allah, believing that He only afflicts you with what ultimately benefits you. Allah says: “I am as My servant thinks of Me.”

7. Looking at those who are in greater distress and hardship, as this is an effective and beneficial remedy.

8. Worshiping Allah through patience, as patience has a praiseworthy outcome. Allah says: “And give glad tidings to the patient.”

9. Keeping company with those who increase your certainty and reliance on Allah, as the Prophet ﷺ said: “The example of a good companion and a bad companion is like that of a perfume seller and a blacksmith.”

10. Helping those in need, as this is one of the greatest means of alleviating worries. The Prophet ﷺ said: “The most beloved people to Allah are those who are most beneficial to others, and the most beloved deeds to Allah are bringing happiness to a Muslim.”

Shaykh Muhammad ibn Ghalib al-‘Umari (may Allah preserve him).
