Recently, Venezuelan Oil Minister Tareck El Aissami condemned the Biden administration’s “irrational” and “senseless” continuation of the Trump sanctions program against Caracas and other oil-producing countries.

“The imposition of sanctions, blockades, and aggressions by the West [the US and its allies] against main oil-producing countries are part of the senseless and irrational measures that have caused an imbalance in energy markets,” stated El Aissami during the OPEC+ countries 33rd meeting last week in Vienna, Austria.

The Venezuelan official went on to praise OPEC's “transcendental” decision to slash production by 2 million barrels beginning in November to shore up prices. The production cuts have raised fears of higher fuel prices in the US, which would hurt Democrat prospects in November’s midterm elections as well as the energy war against Russia.

The market instability in turn has led to renewed discussions within the White House around easing sanctions against Venezuela.

"When you visit communes, you realize that in the midst of all the problems that we face as a country, communards are building something. They are facing contradictions and many do have critical positions in the face of that which they consider political deviations, but their focus is to build an alternative model in the political and economic spheres. They are committed to the future and understand that the political-declarative can’t be the center of what they do.

I think that the commune is a place from which the recomposition of Chavismo can take shape. The crisis has generated the conditions: the state has no resources, private capital has never invested in viable economic solutions for the people, and many of those who kept the country going during these hard years are committed to the communal path."

Venezuela’s Vice-minister of Communal Economy talks about grassroots economic circuits and the challenges faced by Venezuelan communes.

The United States expelled hundreds of Venezuelans to Mexico over the weekend as a new Department of Homeland Security (DHS) policy took effect, throwing thousands of migrants into disarray.

The new policy, announced Wednesday, allows US authorities to expel Venezuelan migrants under Title 42 authority, a Trump-era policy implemented at the beginning of the pandemic that allows the United States to keep migrants from seeking asylum at the border in the name of limiting the spread of COVID-19.

The immediate rollout of the new measures caused havoc at the US-Mexico border, with migrants already in US territory expelled into Mexico with little more than a sheet of paper indicating the details of the new policy. A group of Venezuelan migrants in Matamoros opted to stage a protest at the international bridge, leading to the temporary shutdown of the crossing. The new policy has reportedly already led to the break up of families.

🧵🗞The New York Times heard that we had labeled Reuters the most dishonest outlet when it came to Venezuela coverage and, full of outrage, decided to set record straight. And bravo to them for reasserting their disgusting “journalism” credentials.

#Opinion | "Times have changed, the world, and in particular, Latin America and the Caribbean, are evolving positively towards the construction of a different international system and that has weakened Washington's hegemony. In the region, the loss of prestige of the Organization of American States (OAS) is evident, while at the same time the Lima Group has disappeared, reducing the weight of the United States' policies against Venezuela.

This situation seems to have reached an almost terminal stage at the recent 52nd General Assembly of the OAS, held in Peru from October 5 to 7. At this gathering, where Venezuela did not participate due to having withdrawn from the organization in 2019, an event occurred that is surely indicative of the final death throes of Juan Guaidó as a political actor manufactured by the United States."

🗞️ #News | The destruction in El Castaño (Aragua state) occurred only a week after several landslides swept away the neighboring town of Las Tejerías, leaving over 50 people dead and another 50 missing.

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro said that recent catastrophes result from “climate change” as “capitalism continues to destroy the planet.” He recalled that revolutionary leaders Hugo Chávez and Fidel Castro repeatedly warned about capitalism's consequences for the environment and urged the world to change the system.

Maduro announced a special economic fund for victims “to finance the integral recovery directly and without intermediaries.” He likewise informed that 450 apartments are currently in construction and will be delivered to affected families in three months.

🇻🇪 #Infographic | On October 20, 2012, Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez held a televised cabinet session. The three-hour-plus broadcast, known as “Strike at the Helm” (“Golpe de Timón”) would become one of Chavismo's major landmarks.

One of Chávez’s key criticisms in Strike at the Helm took aim at state-led initiatives without a broader effort to change social relations in the territory. His premonition that socialist islands end up swallowed by the capitalist sea would prove true under Venezuela's economic crisis worsened by US sanctions.

🗞 #News | According to multiple reports, three major opposition parties (Democratic Action, Justice First and A New Era) will withdraw their backing for the US-endorsed experiment led by former lawmaker Juan Guaidó.

An opposition delegation allegedly expressed its position in meetings with US officials this week in Washington DC. The Financial Times quoted a “senior” opposition figure speaking of plans to “redesign everything without Guaidó as interim president."

For his part, Guaidó downplayed the “opinions” of high-ranking opposition figures, claiming he retained support from the White House and vowing to stay on until the next presidential election.

The US has been trying to force the Nicolás Maduro government to reenter into talks with the rightwing sectors as a precondition for any changes to its wide-reaching sanctions policy. Since 2017, the US Treasury Department has levied a string of measures against the Venezuelan economy, including an oil embargo, in an attempt to trigger regime change.

#News | Venezuelan Attorney General Tarek William Saab announced the issuing of 25 international arrest warrants for individuals allegedly involved in corruption at agrochemical company Monómeros.

Considered Venezuela’s second most important foreign-held asset, the Colombia-based agrochemical producer came under the control of Venezuela’s hardline opposition following the recognition of Juan Guaidó as “interim president” by Washington and its allies in 2019 as part of efforts to oust the Nicolás Maduro government.

The Venezuelan government accuses the opposition-appointed board of Monómeros of deliberate mismanagement, driven by political interests, leading to a loss of market share and productive capacity.

#Analysis | A briefing note obtained by The Maple confirms that Canadian government funding quietly propped up an astroturf group led by a member of Venezuela’s self-appointed “interim government,” which is now reported to be on the verge of collapse.

Venezuelan feminists and human rights activists say Canada’s support for the group highlights an attempt by Ottawa to revamp its failed policy of supporting illegitimate political forces inside the Latin American country with "feminist" branding.

The finding follows news last week that Venezuela’s opposition parties are preparing to abandon the so-called “interim government,” which launched a failed coup attempt in 2019.

#News | US Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Ted Cruz (R-TX) penned a letter to President Joe Biden rejecting any sanctions relief against Venezuela.

“We are concerned with recent reports that your administration is considering allowing Chevron to restart oil operations with [Venezuelan state company] Petróleos de Venezuela SA (PDVSA) [...] which remains under US sanctions,” read the letter, sent on Wednesday.

The senators also rejected the recent rapprochement between Biden and the Nicolás Maduro government claiming it is “eroding” international support for self-proclaimed "Interim President" Juan Guaidó. This comes amidst growing international disaffection with the opposition leader after failing to wield any political power in four years.

The impact of US sanctions and the economic crisis has been disastrous. Nonetheless, El Panal’s communards focus less on the hardships that the crisis has brought – which are many and in some cases devastating – than about the lessons learned.

#News | Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was among the first to congratulate Brazilian President-elect Luiz Inácio “Lula” da Silva following his victory in Sunday’s second-round presidential election.

“We celebrate the victory of the Brazilian people [...] Long live the peoples determined to be free, sovereign and independent! Today democracy triumphed in Brazil. Congratulations Lula!” tweeted the Venezuelan head of state shortly after the results were announced.

Lula defeated his far-right opponent Jair Bolsonaro by a narrow margin, with unofficial results giving him 50.9 percent over Bolsonaro’s 49.1 percent. Due to Brazil’s large population, the result nonetheless had the former president defeating the incumbent by over 2 million votes.

The return of the former union leader to the presidency is expected to have large ramifications throughout the region, consolidating a series of victories by leftist and progressive candidates in recent votes.

#Analysis | From the onset of the Bolivarian Process, the Hugo Chávez government implemented policies to democratize food production in Venezuela.

From the 2001 Land Law all the way to the nationalization or creation of companies such as AgroPatria or Pedro Camejo (1), the goal was to ensure the sector was not subjected to the whims of the market and to support small and midsize production, especially from popular power organizations.

In recent years, an economic crisis heavily exacerbated by US sanctions has driven a liberalization of economic policies. The Venezuelan countryside has been no exception.
