Maduro announced a special economic fund for victims “to finance the integral recovery directly and without intermediaries.” He likewise informed that 450 apartments are currently in construction and will be delivered to affected families in three months.

🗞 #News | According to multiple reports, three major opposition parties (Democratic Action, Justice First and A New Era) will withdraw their backing for the US-endorsed experiment led by former lawmaker Juan Guaidó.

An opposition delegation allegedly expressed its position in meetings with US officials this week in Washington DC. The Financial Times quoted a “senior” opposition figure speaking of plans to “redesign everything without Guaidó as interim president."

For his part, Guaidó downplayed the “opinions” of high-ranking opposition figures, claiming he retained support from the White House and vowing to stay on until the next presidential election.

The US has been trying to force the Nicolás Maduro government to reenter into talks with the rightwing sectors as a precondition for any changes to its wide-reaching sanctions policy. Since 2017, the US Treasury Department has levied a string of measures against the Venezuelan economy, including an oil embargo, in an attempt to trigger regime change.

Considered Venezuela’s second most important foreign-held asset, the Colombia-based agrochemical producer came under the control of Venezuela’s hardline opposition following the recognition of Juan Guaidó as “interim president” by Washington and its allies in 2019 as part of efforts to oust the Nicolás Maduro government.

The Venezuelan government accuses the opposition-appointed board of Monómeros of deliberate mismanagement, driven by political interests, leading to a loss of market share and productive capacity.

#News | US Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Ted Cruz (R-TX) penned a letter to President Joe Biden rejecting any sanctions relief against Venezuela.

“We are concerned with recent reports that your administration is considering allowing Chevron to restart oil operations with [Venezuelan state company] Petróleos de Venezuela SA (PDVSA) [...] which remains under US sanctions,” read the letter, sent on Wednesday.

The senators also rejected the recent rapprochement between Biden and the Nicolás Maduro government claiming it is “eroding” international support for self-proclaimed "Interim President" Juan Guaidó. This comes amidst growing international disaffection with the opposition leader after failing to wield any political power in four years.

#News | Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was among the first to congratulate Brazilian President-elect Luiz Inácio “Lula” da Silva following his victory in Sunday’s second-round presidential election.

“We celebrate the victory of the Brazilian people [...] Long live the peoples determined to be free, sovereign and independent! Today democracy triumphed in Brazil. Congratulations Lula!” tweeted the Venezuelan head of state shortly after the results were announced.

Lula defeated his far-right opponent Jair Bolsonaro by a narrow margin, with unofficial results giving him 50.9 percent over Bolsonaro’s 49.1 percent. Due to Brazil’s large population, the result nonetheless had the former president defeating the incumbent by over 2 million votes.

The return of the former union leader to the presidency is expected to have large ramifications throughout the region, consolidating a series of victories by leftist and progressive candidates in recent votes.

#News | The Nicolás Maduro government and the US-backed rightwing opposition are set to restart their dialogue process.

According to multiple outlets, the two sides will reconvene in Mexico as early as this week following a year-long hiatus. Opposition forces are grouped in the self-styled Unitary Platform.

The negotiations will again be facilitated by Norway and one of the early priorities will be the management of some US $3 billion in Venezuelan funds seized by Washington. The two parties will allegedly sign off on an UN-administered plan to disburse the funds for aid programs and infrastructure repairs.

The talks are likewise set to focus on conditions for the upcoming presidential vote, including electoral observation.
