The Venezuelan government has ordered the local office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) to cease operations in the country.

In a press conference on Thursday, Foreign Affairs Minister Yvan Gil said the decision was taken due to the “biased stance” and “inappropriate role” the UN human rights body has played by requesting impunity for individuals involved in violent coup attempts. Caracas gave the OHCHR staff 72 hours to leave.

The announcement came in the wake of the arrest of opposition activist Rocío San Miguel for her alleged involvement in a plot to assault military units and kill government officials that was reportedly thwarted last year. In January, Venezuelan authorities announced 32 people were apprehended, while more arrest orders would follow, and accused US agencies of backing subversive actions.

On Tuesday, local officials reported that a wall collapsed at the “Bulla Loca” open-pit mine in Bolívar state, southeastern Venezuela, engulfing miners and injuring dozens. Around 200 people were reportedly working in the mine when a 30-meter hole opened. The tragedy was caught on video.

Edgar Colina Reyes, Bolívar state’s secretary of citizen security, said on Wednesday that rescue teams were deployed with the military, firefighters, civic protection and many other organizations joining forces. The operation could extend for a month as the area is swept and secured.

Also on Wednesday, President Nicolás Maduro regretted the tragedy and said that more rescue teams were being flown in from Caracas to aid in the search. He also sent his condolences to the families of the deceased miners and pledged to guarantee them “all the social, personal and human support.”

Venezuela’s National Assembly (AN) President Jorge Rodríguez announced that the nationwide dialogue process to craft an electoral schedule had yielded an agreement endorsed by all participating parties.

Signed by 152 representatives from diverse sectors of Venezuelan society, the document proposes 27 potential dates for this year’s presidential vote and will be formally presented to the National Electoral Council (CNE) on Friday for its review. The electoral authorities are expected to announce an electoral calendar by the end of March.

Speaking to the press on Wednesday, Rodríguez said the agreement also gathered around 500 proposals on issues regarding broad aspects of the upcoming electoral process, which contain electoral guarantees for all political parties, equal opportunities for campaigning in national television and social media channels, updating the electoral registry, and inviting international observers as long as they comply with Venezuelan laws and Constitution.

Almeida (from Brazil) and fellow student John Chikuike Ogbu (from Nigeria) discuss this internationalist project and the fight to implement healthcare as a human right and not as a commodity.

Stop the genocide!

Venezuelan social movements united with millions worldwide to protest in solidarity with Palestine, calling for an immediate halt to the US-backed Israeli military operations in Gaza.

The march began at El Panal Commune in Caracas’ 23 de Enero neighborhood, known for its rich history of revolutionary activism, ending with a concentration near the Mountain Barracks, President Hugo Chávez’s resting place and the outpost from where he led the 1992 uprising.

In the rally, Hindu Anderi, a Lebanese-Venezuelan journalist and longstanding Palestinian solidarity activist, criticized multilateral organizations for their failure to halt the genocide in Gaza. She called to create new organizations that respond to people’s demands and address global injustices.
