VENEZUELA'S GANGS HAVE BEEN TURNED INTO ARMED CRIMINAL ENTERPRISES (PART II)
The Cota 905 gang (or one of its bosses) had begun to develop an idea about not only functioning like a company but also as a social movement. It was looking to bring together all the gangs in Caracas to pressure the government to negotiate certain conditions, a kind of criminal syndicate, a union of the outlaws of Caracas.
This idea had nothing to do with business or profitability, which, in fact, are contradictory objectives... Perhaps that's what caused the gang to fail [in its confrontation with the police]. Maybe the Cota 905 gang expected a response from their allies and believed that the government wouldn’t dare to do what it did.

In recent years, Washington has ramped up its regime-change efforts against Caracas through a wide-reaching, devastating economic blockade. In particular, the US Treasury Department has levied a raft of measures targeting Venezuela's oil sector in an attempt to starve the country of foreign income. The unilateral sanctions have crippled the country's most important industry.
In the following infographic, designed by Utopix's Kael Abello, we detail the US sanctions against the oil industry and the resulting fall in output.

VENEZUELA PROTESTS 'INCONSISTENT' ACCUSATIONS OF COLOMBIAN BORDER INCURSION
Apart from thousands of bi-national residents, the 2219-km border is home to a number of smuggling groups which have traditionally taken advantage of price disparities between both Colombian and Venezuelan goods and currencies to generate large profits.
One of the main products smuggled out of Venezuela historically has been government-subsidized fuel. According to Venezuela’s Attorney General Tarek William Saab, authorities have confiscated over 113,000 liters of fuel in anti-smuggling efforts so far this year.

HARDLINE VENEZUELAN OPPOSITION RELENTS AND AGREES TO PARTICIPATE IN ELECTIONS
Venezuelan opposition parties, including extremist elements that had boycotted the electoral process for years, announced Tuesday that they would participate in November’s regional elections.
The decision by the self-styled Unitary Platform—comprised of Democratic Action, Popular Will, Justice First and A New Time—marks an important departure for the hardline elements that had opted not to take part in elections since 2017. Instead, the US-backed forces backed coup plots and schemes aimed at taking power by force.

CRISIS & CRITIQUE: WASHINGTON'S CONSENSUS BROKEN INSIDE THE HOUSE
The letter sent by nineteen US Democrat members of Congress to Secretary of State Antony Blinken [on August 12] has broken the consensus that existed in Washington’s legislative body, as well as in the Democratic Party itself, regarding the country’s policy on Venezuela.
The letter specifies that "The Trump administration's ill-conceived policies have only exacerbated the crisis and damaged US credibility throughout the region. Our government should act urgently to alleviate the suffering of the Venezuelan people by taking immediate steps to lift the broad and indiscriminate sanctions” that aggravate the “humanitarian crisis."
