VENEZUELA RECEIVES FIRST BATCH OF COVAX DOSES, PREPARES FOR IN-PERSON CLASSES

Likewise, the international health agency clarified that this is the first of several shipments to deliver a total of 12,068,000 doses— between China’s Sinovac and Sinopharm shots— that Caracas purchased via the COVAX mechanism last April. The statement added that the Venezuelan resources “have also been utilized to maintain the cold chain and ensure that vaccines are stored correctly” as well as “to procure syringes and other supplies.”

Although the dates for the next shipments remain unknown, PAHO’s Health Emergencies Director Ciro Ugarte said that the organization will look to "prioritize Venezuela in the access to vaccines.” During his weekly press conference, the official added that the next round would consist of an unspecified amount of Sinopharm doses.

PARTICIPATIVE DEMOCRACY UNDER SIEGE: A CONVERSATION WITH LUIS BRITTO GARCÍA

Chávez made democracy “participative” and “protagonic.” I think I can summarize this idea by saying that the concept of popular participation is not limited to electing officials or representatives every so often. Instead, democracy is expanded so that institutions such as referendums, social movements, communal organizations, and the right to demonstrate can influence the decision-making by those in power.

VENEZUELA HITS OUT AT COLOMBIA'S 'FLAGRANT THEFT' OF PETROCHEMICAL CORPORATION MONÓMEROS

The announcement drew an angry rebuke from Caracas. In a statement, Economy Vice President and Oil Minister Tareck El Aissami called the proposed takeover a “flagrant theft of a Venezuelan asset.”

“The Venezuelan government condemns and rejects this aggression against the country by the [Colombian] Iván Duque government in collusion with corrupt Venezuelan right-wing mafias,” the communique read. Caracas accused Bogotá of attempting to “torpedo” the ongoing negotiations between the Nicolás Maduro administration and the US-backed opposition.

IMF BOOSTS VENEZUELAN FOREIGN RESERVES BY 83% WITH $5.1 BN INJECTION

The resources, which come in the form of 3.6 billion Special Drawing Rights (SDR), form part of the IMF’s $650 billion-strong effort to stabilize the global economy in light of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. In total, Latin America is due to receive $56 billion, with Venezuela reportedly being assigned the highest per capita amount.

By obtaining the SDRs, Venezuela’s international reserves jumped 83% last week to a five-year high of $11.3 billion. The Caribbean country’s reserves had dropped from $21 billion in 2013 to historic lows as the Maduro administration looked to alleviate the impact of a sharp fall in oil income and US-led sanctions, which have blocked the country’s access to the global banking and financial system, including bonds, loans and other funding programs.

VENEZUELA ADVANCES TOWARDS A NEW GEOPOLITICAL APPROACH (PART I)

Unlike Chávez, Maduro not only assumed the role of referee and mediator between the bourgeois fractions in order to stabilize the political situation, but also worked on articulation scenarios and models between national capital and the transnational sector. Those who assign Maduro a supporting role in the Venezuelan play are mistaken. Maduro may not be a cultured man, but he is a shrewd politician: he has imposed the logic of trade union bureaucracy on Venezuelan politics.

The High Commissioner’s call came during the opening of the 48th session of the Human Rights Council where she presented her report on the human rights situation in Venezuela. Bachelet also expressed her support for the ongoing dialogue between the government and the US-backed opposition being held in Mexico.

TALES OF RESISTANCE: LOVE FOR THE PEOPLE

“I’ve always done everything for love. My love for the tree and the river made me a painter, my love of knowledge had me leave my hometown to go study. Out of love for sport I became a pitcher, out of love for my country I became a soldier, out of love for the people I became president. Everything we’ve done has been for love. And there is a lot to be done yet. I need more time, and I need your vote for love.” These were Hugo Chávez’s words during his 2006 presidential reelection campaign.

“Revolutionaries are guided by great feelings of love,” Che Guevara famously said. He was one of Chávez’s favorite references. In that 2006 election, like José Martí had written in 1875, the Venezuelan people “love can only be paid back with love” (“amor con amor se paga”) and went into battle with Chávez for the subsequent years.

UN EXPERT RELEASES FULL REPORT ON IMPACT OF US-LED SANCTIONS AGAINST VENEZUELA

The document compiles Douhan’s complete assessment of her 12-day visit to the Caribbean country in February. UN EXPERT RELEASES FULL REPORT ON IMPACT OF US-LED SANCTIONS AGAINST VENEZUELA

The Belarusian lawyer added that the threat of extraterritorial and secondary sanctions has led to “over-compliance by banks and third-country companies,” amplifying the negative impact of primary sanctions. Furthermore, she argued that the “humanitarian exemptions appear to be ineffective and insufficient” to alleviate the crisis.

The special rapporteur concluded that unilateral sanctions against Venezuela are politically motivated, undermine the most fundamental human rights and violate international law. She urged the US and its allies to lift all coercive measures.

VENEZUELA: OIL SECTOR STAGNANT AS US CHAMBER OF COMMERCE CALLS FOR SANCTIONS 'OVERHAUL'

Opposition to Washington’s Venezuela policy has likewise grown louder on Capitol Hill. Several House Democrats, including Jesús “Chuy” García (D-IL), Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and Jim McGovern (D-MA) have spearheaded efforts calling on President Joe Biden to lift the “maximum pressure” measures left by his predecessor.

The US Chamber of Commerce was the latest actor to lobby for a change of direction. In a September 9 letter, the chamber’s Senior Vice President for the Americas Neil Harrington argued for “overhauling a counterproductive U.S. sanctions policy.”
