The main Venezuela-Colombia border crossings have opened for the first time since February 2019.

The bridges connecting the Ureña and San Antonio municipalities in Táchira state to the Colombian town of Cúcuta began allowing pedestrians and vehicles to cross on Tuesday as the Nicolás Maduro government looks to boost trade in the region.

OVERCOMING INEQUALITIES: A CONVERSATION WITH OTRO BETA (PART 1)

Otro Beta is a self-organized project aimed at youth from Venezuela’s barrios. Its initial focus was on culture and sports, and even today basketball and breakdance tournaments continue to be important for Otro Beta. However, the project’s new emphases are technical education and counseling for victims of machista violence. Through a variety of approaches, Otro Beta has always sought to bring the barrio youth away from the dead-ends that capitalism imposes on them. It aims to incorporate them into the new horizons of personal and collective development that the Bolivarian Revolution has opened up. Today Otra Beta has almost three hundred cells or “confluence points” and eight Socialist Endogenous Development Nuclei spread throughout the country.

VENEZUELAN VICTIMS OF XENOPHOBIC ATTACKS RETURN FROM CHILE

The group of 200 migrants arrived back in Venezuela on Monday night aboard a flight operated by the state-owned Conviasa airline. Images of their arrival were widely shared by the Maduro government, which has placed great emphasis on the “Return to the Homeland” program. Nevertheless, the program has faced criticism for a lack of support for returnees to aid their resettlement inside Venezuela.

VENEZUELA: US-BACKED GUAIDÓ FAILS TO SHOW UP IN COURT FOR $8.5 BILLION CONOCOPHILLIPS DISPUTE

The massive award was issued in March 2019 by a World Bank International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) tribunal for the 2007 nationalization of ConocoPhillips’ oil projects in Venezuela (Hamaca, Petrozuata and Corocoro) under the former Hugo Chávez government. Both the Nicolás Maduro government and the Guaidó camp have challenged the ICSID decision, with an annulment hearing scheduled for later this month.

The latest ruling in favor of the Houston-based corporation was grounded on the opposition leader’s legal team missing the deadline "to plead or otherwise defend this action though duly served with summons and copy of the complaint” on March 10, 2020.

OVERCOMING INEQUALITIES: A CONVERSATION WITH OTRO BETA (PART 1)

In the barrio there are many different linguistic codes, and even more so among young people. "Beta" is a word that in barrio slang has negative connotations. If something bad happens, one young kid will say to his pana [friend]: Did you see that beta?

So, we took the word and turned it around. We put the "other" in front of it to change the meaning. That is, if a "beta" is a bad thing, "otro beta" [another beta] refers to a good thing. In that way, we resignified the term. We did this because we understood that one can do politics with language. Moreover, to engage in political and social work with barrio youth we have to break with the formalities of standardized language.

VENEZUELAN AUTHORITIES REOPEN COLOMBIA BORDER AFTER MORE THAN TWO YEARS

Government-appointed Táchira “protector” Freddy Bernal published videos on social media showing the removal of the containers blocking the Simón Bolívar bridge, the largest border crossing. He added that some 4,600 Venezuelan children will resume in-person classes in Cúcuta. Bernal is running for governor in the November 21 regional “mega-elections.”

Rodríguez stated that the Venezuelan authorities would fulfill their responsibilities and accused the Iván Duque government of allowing “paramilitary and drug trafficking groups” to prosper in the area.

BORRELL 'INTERVENTIONISM' PUTS EU NOVEMBER ELECTORAL MISSION TO VENEZUELA AT RISK

Venezuela has slammed the European Union (EU) High Commissioner for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell’s recent statements as “interventionist.”

Speaking in Madrid last Friday, Borrell doubled down on the bloc’s regime change goals in Venezuela, telling reporters that he has “no less desire than the US” to see a change of government in the Caribbean country. In recent years, Washington has looked to oust the Nicolás Maduro government through attempted coup d’états and a wide-reaching economic blockade against the country deemed “illegal” and “devastating” by the United Nations, amongst other strategies.

BORRELL 'INTERVENTIONISM' PUTS EU NOVEMBER ELECTORAL MISSION TO VENEZUELA AT RISK

Borrell’s comments at the New Economic Forum also sparked a diplomatic storm surrounding the upcoming 11-member EU mission to accompany Venezuela’s November 21 regional and local elections. During his speech, the diplomat claimed that it will be the EU report and not Venezuelan votes which “will legitimize the Maduro government or not.”

Finally, the Spanish politician controversially admitted that the electoral mission looks to safeguard conditions for the rightwing forces instead of impartially accompanying the process.

Venezuela’s representative to the United Nations (UN) denounced an alleged “false flag” plot by the United States and Colombia at the Security Council (UNSC) and warned that Colombian government is seeking to involve Venezuela in the country’s long-running internal conflict.

“The Colombian State authorities are convinced that the repetition of a false warmongering narrative is sufficient argument to prepare an aggression against Venezuela, in alliance with the government of the United States of America,” wrote Venezuelan Ambassador Samuel Moncada.
