VENEZUELA: MONETARY RECONVERSION HIT HARD BY CURRENCY SPECULATION
The imminent redenomination led to a currency speculation drive, with the black market rate going from 4 million to 4.8 million BsS, or 4.8 BsD, per 1 US dollar in the past week. The exchange value went up further to 5.14 BsD on its first day, meaning that the Venezuelan currency lost 28.5 percent of its value in ten days.
Social media users and analysts decried the speculative frenzy, with Economy Vice Minister William Castillo calling it a “political operation” and blasting opposition commentators who justify “attacks against the economy.”

A federal court in Washington, D.C. reportedly greenlighted oil giant ConocoPhillips to enforce a US $8.5 billion arbitration award against Venezuela. According to documents published by Law360, Venezuela was declared in “default” after self-proclaimed “Interim President” Juan Guaidó’s lawyers failed to respond to the court in over a year.
Washington’s recognition of Guaidó’s self-proclamation in January 2019, saw the politician be handed control of a number of Venezuela’s assets abroad as well as assume the country's legal representation before US courts. In recent weeks, social media in Venezuela has been “on fire” because a number of artists and influencers, some foreign and some Venezuelan, declared that the country’s situation has “improved dramatically” in the past few years.
We should not go from one extreme -- where the “catastrophe” was taken out of proportion to lobby for foreign intervention -- to another where everything is “fine” because a youtuber bought a cute house on the beach. When it comes to Venezuela, no 15-minute video will be enough to grasp reality. Still, we appreciate the effort.

Its initial focus was on culture and sports, and even today basketball and breakdance tournaments continue to be important for Otro Beta. In the barrio there are many different linguistic codes, and even more so among young people. "Beta" is a word that in barrio slang has negative connotations. If something bad happens, one young kid will say to his pana [friend]: Did you see that beta?
So, we took the word and turned it around. We put the "other" in front of it to change the meaning. That is, if a "beta" is a bad thing, "otro beta" [another beta] refers to a good thing. In that way, we resignified the term. We did this because we understood that one can do politics with language. Moreover, to engage in political and social work with barrio youth we have to break with the formalities of standardized language.
