'EL POLLO' CARVAJAL EXTRADITION TO US SUSPENDED, EXPECTED TO PROCEED SHORTLY

A longtime official under the Hugo Chávez governments, Carvajal publicly broke with the Bolivarian process in 2017 before declaring himself a “soldier” of self-proclaimed “interim president” Juan Guaidó’s cause in 2019. The former lawmaker and army general became an outspoken critic of the Nicolás Maduro government, which he describes as “betraying” Chávez’s legacy. Carvajal even went as far as calling for the armed forces to stage a coup in 2019.

The former intelligence chief claims to be in possession of “valuable information” allegedly incriminating the Maduro government and entourage and reports to have shared it with the UN Human Rights Council and the International Criminal Court (ICC). The ICC is currently considering opening an investigation into the Maduro government for alleged crimes against humanity.

CRISIS & CRITIQUE: US BACK TO 'MAXIMUM PRESSURE' WITH SAAB EXTRADITION

For some, it has proved difficult to fight for a businessman as rich as Saab, especially considering that he rarely entered the public limelight. Saab benefited from Venezuelan state contracts and enjoyed privileged conditions to acquire state assets that had been nationalized for the people by Hugo Chávez. These included [supermarket chain] Abastos Bicentenario.

However, Washington’s double standards in the case are stark.

NEW INVESTIGATION REVEALS CIA KNEW ABOUT OPERATION GIDEON BUT FAILED TO STOP IT

The involvement of US authorities has long been suspected, with Goudreau, head of the security contractor Silvercorp, having previously claimed that he had support from the White House and held meetings with officials at the Trump Hotel in Washington DC and the Trump Doral resort in Florida.

“[I]n the winter of 2020, according to two sources aware of the background machinations surrounding Operation Gideon, a representative of the CIA approached Goudreau somewhere on an undisclosed Carribean island [...] as he was putting together the doomed plot. They brought a clear message: end Operation Gideon; if it is launched, the U.S. government will offer zero support,” wrote Makuch.

VENEZUELAN CAMPESINOS DENOUNCE DIESEL PRICE HIKE, LACK OF GOV'T SUPPORT

Venezuela’s Campesino Struggle Platform denounced that a number of state-owned gas stations have begun to sell diesel at US $0.50 per liter.

In a communique issued on October 26, the rural movements emphasized that elevating diesel prices represents a “devastating blow” for thousands of small and midsize food producers, with increased costs falling upon consumers.

AS CHÁVEZ SAID, ‘LET’S NOT CHANGE THE CLIMATE, LET’S CHANGE THE SYSTEM!’: A CONVERSATION WITH MAX AJL

This week and through November 12, the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) takes place in Glasgow, Scotland. COP26 brings together heads of state and other prominent figures to talk about climate change. However, the conference won’t address the central environmental problem: capitalism. In this interview we talk to Max Ajl, author of A People’s Green New Deal (Pluto Press, 2021), which examines the capitalist roots of the environmental crisis, and addresses its impact on countries of the Global South such as Venezuela.

VENEZUELAN CAMPESINOS DENOUNCE DIESEL PRICE HIKE, LACK OF GOV'T SUPPORT

The countryside organizations asked President Nicolás Maduro to clarify these measures and called for national mobilizations to prevent the new diesel cost imposition. No date for the march had been announced at the time of writing.

According to users, on Monday, a selected number of gas stations across the country began selling previously-subsidized diesel at the $0.50 “international price” after receiving authorization from a state oil company PDVSA general manager. The company’s president and the Oil Ministry have yet to confirm if the measure will be permanent and applied nationwide.

THE VENEZUELANALYSIS PODCAST EPISODE 02: POPULAR POWER UNDER DURESS

The corporate media coverage of Venezuela has always placed its focus on Chávez and Maduro, what the government did or said. This narrative, and the respective counter-narrative, ignore one key element of the Bolivarian Process: popular power.

The second episode of the Venezuelanalysis podcast focuses on grassroots organizations under conditions of duress: a years-long economic crisis and devastating US sanctions.

AS CHÁVEZ SAID, ‘LET’S NOT CHANGE THE CLIMATE, LET’S CHANGE THE SYSTEM!’: A CONVERSATION WITH MAX AJL

The great majority of progressive proposals take aim neither at capitalism nor imperialism. In fact, they are often blind to them. If we want to change the world-system, we need to have a sense of what it is. In the most general sense, drawing on Samir Amin, we can say that it is a system of polarized accumulation, producing great mountains of wealth, on the one hand, and far larger seas of poverty, on the other. That is a feature and not a bug of the system: the wealth accumulated at the core of the system is stolen from the periphery. To change that type of world-system, you need first of all to strike at the current mechanisms of value transfer from periphery to core.

'MEGA-ELECTION' CAMPAIGN KICKS OFF IN VENEZUELA

The official start of the campaign saw rallies, marches, convoys and protests held across the country, as well as a flurry of activity on social media. Nearly 21.2 million voters are eligible to participate later this month in the last scheduled ballot before the 2024 presidential race.

Initial campaign promises centered around improving local infrastructure as well as healthcare, education, transport services, and spurring economic improvement. Amidst a wide-reaching US blockade, Venezuela is toiling from its seventh consecutive recessionary year, leading to severely strained basic services including fuel distribution, telecommunications and the electrical grid.

US DROPS SEVEN CHARGES AGAINST ALEX SAAB AS PART OF DEAL WITH CAPE VERDE

A US judge dismissed all but one charge against Venezuelan government envoy Alex Saab as part of a deal between the United States and the Republic of Cape Verde to facilitate his extradition. Saab still faces one count of conspiracy to launder money, a charge that carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison if found guilty.

Court filings on Monday revealed that Saab’s controversial extradition to the US was made contingent on assurances to Cape Verde that he would face no more than 20 years imprisonment, the maximum allowed by the African country’s laws. The seven other charges of money laundering, dismissed by US District Judge Robert Scola, would have each also carried up to 20 years in prison.

US DROPS SEVEN CHARGES AGAINST ALEX SAAB AS PART OF DEAL WITH CAPE VERDE

"The political nature of this case is becoming increasingly clear. It is clearly a kidnapping,” stated Venezuelan Vice President for Communications Alfred Nazareth Ñáñez.

The extradition of Saab had immediate political repercussions, with the Venezuelan government pulling out of talks with the US-backed opposition. Caracas had recently appointed the businessman as a delegate at the Mexico-based talks, which were due to enter their fourth round the day after his extradition. Writer and activist Leonardo Flores argued the extradition was a subtle effort by the US to “sabotage” the dialogue efforts.

ICC OPENS PROBE INTO VENEZUELA, SIGNS COOPERATION DEAL WITH THE MADURO GOV'T

Despite the differing opinions, the Venezuelan leader said that the agreement with the ICC will guarantee "cooperation, positive complementarity, mutual support and constructive dialogue to seek truth and justice."

For his part, Khan emphasized that the Court’s investigation should not be politicized. “We are committed to working collaboratively and independently. We are guided by the principles of legality and the rule of law",” he said.

The British lawyer also praised the Venezuelan authorities’ “open dialogue” as well as their commitment to upholding the Rome Statute, which the country subscribed to on June 7, 2000.

🇻🇪🗣 INTERVIEW 🗣🇻🇪

BALANCE OF FORCES IN THE NOVEMBER ELECTIONS: A CONVERSATION WITH CLODOVALDO HERNÁNDEZ

The ruling socialist party [PSUV], despite having amply won the parliamentary elections of December of last year, still suffered a substantial drop in electoral participation when compared to the 2018 presidential elections. The recently deceased William Izarra did the math: the PSUV dropped from 6.2 million in 2018 to 3.5 million in 2020. In other words, 2.7 million people – or 32.9% – stopped voting PSUV.

However, only the November election results will demonstrate the real impact of the unilateral coercive measures on Chavismo as a political movement. As for the impact on the people, I agree that it has been devastating. The hardest-hit sector is the one that is not able to get an income in US dollars, while those who have secured dollar incomes are experiencing a relative improvement in their living conditions.
