AS CHÁVEZ SAID, ‘LET’S NOT CHANGE THE CLIMATE, LET’S CHANGE THE SYSTEM!’: A CONVERSATION WITH MAX AJL

This week and through November 12, the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) takes place in Glasgow, Scotland. COP26 brings together heads of state and other prominent figures to talk about climate change. However, the conference won’t address the central environmental problem: capitalism. In this interview we talk to Max Ajl, author of A People’s Green New Deal (Pluto Press, 2021), which examines the capitalist roots of the environmental crisis, and addresses its impact on countries of the Global South such as Venezuela.

VENEZUELAN CAMPESINOS DENOUNCE DIESEL PRICE HIKE, LACK OF GOV'T SUPPORT

The countryside organizations asked President Nicolás Maduro to clarify these measures and called for national mobilizations to prevent the new diesel cost imposition. No date for the march had been announced at the time of writing.

According to users, on Monday, a selected number of gas stations across the country began selling previously-subsidized diesel at the $0.50 “international price” after receiving authorization from a state oil company PDVSA general manager. The company’s president and the Oil Ministry have yet to confirm if the measure will be permanent and applied nationwide.

THE VENEZUELANALYSIS PODCAST EPISODE 02: POPULAR POWER UNDER DURESS

The corporate media coverage of Venezuela has always placed its focus on Chávez and Maduro, what the government did or said. This narrative, and the respective counter-narrative, ignore one key element of the Bolivarian Process: popular power.

The second episode of the Venezuelanalysis podcast focuses on grassroots organizations under conditions of duress: a years-long economic crisis and devastating US sanctions.

AS CHÁVEZ SAID, ‘LET’S NOT CHANGE THE CLIMATE, LET’S CHANGE THE SYSTEM!’: A CONVERSATION WITH MAX AJL

The great majority of progressive proposals take aim neither at capitalism nor imperialism. In fact, they are often blind to them. If we want to change the world-system, we need to have a sense of what it is. In the most general sense, drawing on Samir Amin, we can say that it is a system of polarized accumulation, producing great mountains of wealth, on the one hand, and far larger seas of poverty, on the other. That is a feature and not a bug of the system: the wealth accumulated at the core of the system is stolen from the periphery. To change that type of world-system, you need first of all to strike at the current mechanisms of value transfer from periphery to core.

'MEGA-ELECTION' CAMPAIGN KICKS OFF IN VENEZUELA

The official start of the campaign saw rallies, marches, convoys and protests held across the country, as well as a flurry of activity on social media. Nearly 21.2 million voters are eligible to participate later this month in the last scheduled ballot before the 2024 presidential race.

Initial campaign promises centered around improving local infrastructure as well as healthcare, education, transport services, and spurring economic improvement. Amidst a wide-reaching US blockade, Venezuela is toiling from its seventh consecutive recessionary year, leading to severely strained basic services including fuel distribution, telecommunications and the electrical grid.

US DROPS SEVEN CHARGES AGAINST ALEX SAAB AS PART OF DEAL WITH CAPE VERDE

A US judge dismissed all but one charge against Venezuelan government envoy Alex Saab as part of a deal between the United States and the Republic of Cape Verde to facilitate his extradition. Saab still faces one count of conspiracy to launder money, a charge that carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison if found guilty.

Court filings on Monday revealed that Saab’s controversial extradition to the US was made contingent on assurances to Cape Verde that he would face no more than 20 years imprisonment, the maximum allowed by the African country’s laws. The seven other charges of money laundering, dismissed by US District Judge Robert Scola, would have each also carried up to 20 years in prison.

US DROPS SEVEN CHARGES AGAINST ALEX SAAB AS PART OF DEAL WITH CAPE VERDE

"The political nature of this case is becoming increasingly clear. It is clearly a kidnapping,” stated Venezuelan Vice President for Communications Alfred Nazareth Ñáñez.

The extradition of Saab had immediate political repercussions, with the Venezuelan government pulling out of talks with the US-backed opposition. Caracas had recently appointed the businessman as a delegate at the Mexico-based talks, which were due to enter their fourth round the day after his extradition. Writer and activist Leonardo Flores argued the extradition was a subtle effort by the US to “sabotage” the dialogue efforts.

BALANCE OF FORCES IN THE NOVEMBER ELECTIONS: A CONVERSATION WITH CLODOVALDO HERNÁNDEZ

On November 21, Venezuela will hold its 27th election since Chávez came to power. This contest will decide regional authorities such as governors and mayors. More importantly, however, the election will determine the fate of political gridlock in Venezuela, according to analyst Clodovaldo Hernández.

In this interview, Hernández, who is a regular commentator at the influential website La Iguana TV and a writer for Ciudad CCS and CuatroF, discusses the upcoming elections and talks about self-proclaimed “Interim President” Juan Guaidó’s demise as a political actor.

ICC OPENS PROBE INTO VENEZUELA, SIGNS COOPERATION DEAL WITH THE MADURO GOV'T

Despite the differing opinions, the Venezuelan leader said that the agreement with the ICC will guarantee "cooperation, positive complementarity, mutual support and constructive dialogue to seek truth and justice."

For his part, Khan emphasized that the Court’s investigation should not be politicized. “We are committed to working collaboratively and independently. We are guided by the principles of legality and the rule of law",” he said.

The British lawyer also praised the Venezuelan authorities’ “open dialogue” as well as their commitment to upholding the Rome Statute, which the country subscribed to on June 7, 2000.

BALANCE OF FORCES IN THE NOVEMBER ELECTIONS: A CONVERSATION WITH CLODOVALDO HERNÁNDEZ

The ruling socialist party [PSUV], despite having amply won the parliamentary elections of December of last year, still suffered a substantial drop in electoral participation when compared to the 2018 presidential elections. The recently deceased William Izarra did the math: the PSUV dropped from 6.2 million in 2018 to 3.5 million in 2020. In other words, 2.7 million people – or 32.9% – stopped voting PSUV.

However, only the November election results will demonstrate the real impact of the unilateral coercive measures on Chavismo as a political movement. As for the impact on the people, I agree that it has been devastating. The hardest-hit sector is the one that is not able to get an income in US dollars, while those who have secured dollar incomes are experiencing a relative improvement in their living conditions.

VENEZUELAN WORKERS MOBILIZE FOR WAGE REFORMS & AGAINST LABOR PERSECUTION

Campaign organizers claim that state security forces have arrested as many as 150 workers’ leaders, as groupings including the Communist Party of Venezuela (PCV), International Marxist Tendency (CMI) and Socialism and Liberty Party (PSL) demanded “an end to criminalization of those who struggle for their labor rights.” While the march was not backed by the ruling United Socialist Party (PSUV), some rank and file members did support it.

“They [the workers] were arrested for denouncing corruption, fighting for their rights or opposing privatization (…) With workers behind bars there can be no Merry Christmas or Happy New Year,” League of Socialist Workers (LTS) spokesman Ángel Arias told those present.

VENEZUELA SALUTES FSLN VICTORY AS NEW US SANCTIONS LOOM OVER NICARAGUA

In echoes of the US’ strategy for regime change in Venezuela, the RENACER Act also calls for increased coordination with the European Union and Canada and increased scrutiny of international lending to Managua. Restrictions on Caracas’ access to multilateral financial institutions have led to some of the most punishing consequences, restrictions that infamously caused delayed deliveries of life-saving Covid-19 vaccines.

A senior State Department official told Reuters on Tuesday that the Biden administration intends to impose new unilateral sanctions on the Central American "very soon."
