New economic indicators revealed Venezuela has left hyperinflation territory as the economy struggles under US-led sanctions and the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to the Venezuelan Finance Observatory (OVF), an economic office that responds to US-backed opposition, monthly inflation dropped to record lows at 9.1 percent in March. The accumulated inflation in 2021 now stands at 155.3 percent, and interannual at 3,867 percent.

The Venezuelan government announced a series of measures to support the population as the country contends with record-high cases of COVID-19.
Among the measures announced by President Nicolás Maduro on Tuesday were a ban on evictions, a special “stay at home” benefit for two million private-sector workers, and a one-time benefit for 15 million people, including four million self-employed workers. Venezuela has acquired 11.3 million additional Covid-19 vaccines through the United Nations’ COVAX program.
The US $128 million deal was reportedly made possible after Caracas was able to “liberate” funds which had been blocked by Washington’s unilateral coercive measures. Authorities have informed that an initial 50% downpayment was made to the Switzerland-based GAVI Vaccine Alliance on Saturday, while the remaining monies are “guaranteed.”

The president of the Venezuelan National Assembly (AN) accused opposition leader Juan Guaidó of trying to “steal” US $53 million in Venezuelan funds currently frozen by the US Treasury Department.
Since 2019, the US has sequestered $342 million held by the Venezuelan Central Bank (BCV) in the United States alongside other assets as part of efforts to oust the Maduro government from power. Washington put this money at the disposal of the opposition but its use requires a license from the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).

A respected trade union leader, Eduardo Sánchez is the president of the Sindicato Nacional de Trabajadores de la Universidad [University Workers’ National Union] and the Federación de Universitarios [University Workers Federation]. The son of a campesina and a construction worker, Sánchez began his political militancy at age 15 and first entered a union as an 18-year-old paper mill worker. He later worked at a Goodyear plant, becoming the head of the rubber workers union.
After being laid off for leading a strike at Goodyear, Sánchez began working at the Universidad Central de Venezuela [UCV, Central University of Venezuela], where he continues to work security to this day.
