VENEZUELA ACCUSES GUAIDÓ OF $53 MILLION OF PUBLIC FUND 'THEFT'

The president of the Venezuelan National Assembly (AN) accused opposition leader Juan Guaidó of trying to “steal” US $53 million in Venezuelan funds currently frozen by the US Treasury Department.

Since 2019, the US has sequestered $342 million held by the Venezuelan Central Bank (BCV) in the United States alongside other assets as part of efforts to oust the Maduro government from power. Washington put this money at the disposal of the opposition but its use requires a license from the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).

OIL OUTPUT REMAINS STEADY AS PDVSA EYES FUEL PRODUCTION BOOST

US-led sanctions have forced PDVSA to rely upon fuel imports to satisfy internal demand, estimated to be around 250,000 bpd currently, between gasoline and diesel. The country entered an acute diesel shortage period after Washington put an end to crude-for-diesel swaps, a mechanism used by the Caribbean nation to circumvent sanctions, in October 2020.

THE WORKING CLASS IN ITS LABYRINTH: A CONVERSATION WITH EDUARDO SÁNCHEZ

The crisis of the working class is multidimensional. First, the minimum wage in Venezuela is less than one dollar a month, according to official data. The UN considers anyone who has an income below 1.9 USD per day to be in extreme poverty.

To give you a more precise approximation, the CENDA [research center for the working class] estimates that the basic goods basket here – including food, housing, and other basic goods and services – comes to around 300 USD per month.

This drives the working class to search for precarious, sometimes dangerous jobs to supplement these tiny salaries.
