Eastern Venezuela is home to extensive petroleum extraction and processing operations which have their hub in the cities of Barcelona and Puerto la Cruz in Anzoátegui state. The Luisa Cáceres de Arismendi Commune, one of the most advanced communes in the country, grew up in the shadow of this multibillion-dollar business in one of Barcelona's working-class neighborhoods. This is a rapidly-growing commune – remarkable because of its success in an urban context – which focuses on recycling and waste disposal to maintain itself. In Part I of this two-part series, Luisa Caceres’ communards explain the challenges of building a commune in a country besieged by US imperialism.

In a recent report, Credit Suisse upped its 2022 growth prediction from 4.5 to 20 percent. The Swiss investment bank stressed that the number “is not a typo,” arguing that the Venezuelan economy “hit rock bottom” in 2020.

“If we are accurate, these might end up being among the strongest growth prints globally for these years,” the report goes on to add. Credit Suisse likewise upped its 2023 GDP growth forecast from 3 to 8 percent.

On April 11, 2002, it looked like Hugo Chávez would join a list of figures like Salvador Allende and Jacobo Árbenz, and that Venezuela would be yet another country to fall victim to a US-backed coup. Riding a media propaganda frenzy and a false flag massacre, Venezuelan elites ousted Chávez from the presidential palace.

But this time it was different. As word got out, the Venezuelan people braved brutal repression and converged on Miraflores Palace to demand Chávez' return. Together with loyal military forces, they managed to overturn the coup and restore constitutional just two days later. Chávez was back, and the Revolution was here to stay.

In this infographic, we recap the main episodes of the failed coup.

Venezuela’s Bolivarian Revolution has long defended the idea of a multipolar world, where countries would be free of domination by US hegemony.

President Nicolás Maduro signaled that the campaign against Russia, a strong ally of Venezuela, was being driven by a “Western media dictatorship” that promoted “obscene lies and campaigns against humanity.”

The president further warned that left unchecked, this campaign could lead to a “Third World War.”

"The Venezuelan government understands that the Russian invasion of Ukraine has led Washington to pay more attention to Russia's allies in Latin America.

Venezuela’s case is particularly relevant now since it is both a strategic partner of Russia, and it is the country that holds the world's largest oil reserves. That is why, when the US began to consider imposing sanctions on Russian energy exports, prominent voices from the two main political parties pointed to Venezuela as a possible substitute."

"Around the World in 60 Days" is a brand new column by geopolitical analyst Sergio Rodríguez Gelfenstein. In the first edition, he examines the global correlation of forces and its impact on the Latin American region.

“On April 13 (2002), the Venezuelan people taught a lesson to the oligarchy and the empire,” President Nicolás Maduro said in his speech.

The Venezuelan leader paid tribute to those killed fighting against the short-lived coup government and hailed the events of twenty years ago as “a victory of the Bolivarian civilian-military union.”
