On April 11, 2002, it looked like Hugo Chávez would join a list of figures like Salvador Allende and Jacobo Árbenz, and that Venezuela would be yet another country to fall victim to a US-backed coup. Riding a media propaganda frenzy and a false flag massacre, Venezuelan elites ousted Chávez from the presidential palace.
But this time it was different. As word got out, the Venezuelan people braved brutal repression and converged on Miraflores Palace to demand Chávez' return. Together with loyal military forces, they managed to overturn the coup and restore constitutional just two days later. Chávez was back, and the Revolution was here to stay.
In this infographic, we recap the main episodes of the failed coup.

Venezuela’s Bolivarian Revolution has long defended the idea of a multipolar world, where countries would be free of domination by US hegemony.
President Nicolás Maduro signaled that the campaign against Russia, a strong ally of Venezuela, was being driven by a “Western media dictatorship” that promoted “obscene lies and campaigns against humanity.”
The president further warned that left unchecked, this campaign could lead to a “Third World War.”

"The Venezuelan government understands that the Russian invasion of Ukraine has led Washington to pay more attention to Russia's allies in Latin America.
Venezuela’s case is particularly relevant now since it is both a strategic partner of Russia, and it is the country that holds the world's largest oil reserves. That is why, when the US began to consider imposing sanctions on Russian energy exports, prominent voices from the two main political parties pointed to Venezuela as a possible substitute."

Pressure to ease sanctions against Venezuela’s oil industry has been gaining steam within the Caribbean country’s opposition sectors as well. On Wednesday, a group of Venezuelan politicians, businessmen, economists and analysts penned a letter to the Biden administration asking to lift measures that would permit the return of Western oil firms to the Caribbean nation.
The signatories demanded the US government overcome "domestic political pressures" that have hindered recent talks with Caracas. They equally urged the Venezuelan opposition led by self-proclaimed "Interim President" Juan Guaidó to "not be held hostage by extreme positions that only prolong the painful status quo."
