"The Venezuelan government understands that the Russian invasion of Ukraine has led Washington to pay more attention to Russia's allies in Latin America.

Venezuela’s case is particularly relevant now since it is both a strategic partner of Russia, and it is the country that holds the world's largest oil reserves. That is why, when the US began to consider imposing sanctions on Russian energy exports, prominent voices from the two main political parties pointed to Venezuela as a possible substitute."

"Around the World in 60 Days" is a brand new column by geopolitical analyst Sergio Rodríguez Gelfenstein. In the first edition, he examines the global correlation of forces and its impact on the Latin American region.

Pressure to ease sanctions against Venezuela’s oil industry has been gaining steam within the Caribbean country’s opposition sectors as well. On Wednesday, a group of Venezuelan politicians, businessmen, economists and analysts penned a letter to the Biden administration asking to lift measures that would permit the return of Western oil firms to the Caribbean nation.

The signatories demanded the US government overcome "domestic political pressures" that have hindered recent talks with Caracas. They equally urged the Venezuelan opposition led by self-proclaimed "Interim President" Juan Guaidó to "not be held hostage by extreme positions that only prolong the painful status quo."

Daniel Jadue, a former presidential candidate and leading figure in the Communist Party of Chile, highlighted the efforts by Venezuelan authorities to punish human rights violations, contrasting the lack of justice in cases of abuses by the armed forces in his native Chile.

The Chilean politician, who is also a longtime supporter of the Chávez and Maduro governments in Venezuela, highlighted recent episodes that saw Chilean state security forces appear to deliberately target the eyes of demonstrators during protests. In an exchange with Jadue, President Nicolás Maduro offered to provide surgery to those demonstrators who suffered injuries to their eyes.

Venezuelan activists rallied to demand freedom for five youths reportedly detained unjustly during anti-gang operations last year.

“We [still] don't know what is the evidence held against them, authorities refuse to meet with us and inform us about the process. They are being pressured to admit crimes they did not commit," reads a communique presented in the rally held on Tuesday in front of Caracas' Justice Palace.

The activists demanded that the Venezuelan government change the “inhuman conditions” in the country’s prisons, revolutionize the judicial system to advance human rights and “stop the criminalization of poverty in popular neighborhoods.”
