FUTURE OF VFX INDUSTRY
Hi guys, I'm 20 old man and a selft taught VFX Artist. Basicly I was in Materials Engineering department in Turkey and got really good at the classes that I took but I was always been in love doing VFX projects at the same time. I didn't actually like the environment of engineering because most of the people whom I talked to either doesn't know what the hell he/she is gonna do with their life and also they don't really care about their responsibilities whatsoever.
At the same time AI improvements and all that, I knew that most of the students who don't get a job or own a business would absolutely have no chance of living properly in the future, that was my mindset. Long story short, I have quited engineering and digged deep into getting clients on VFX, Motion Graphics or Product Visualizations (since I have created a lot of personal projects and have a good understanding of VFX pipeline, and use Houdini + Maya on daily basis or R&Ds). And I'm thinking that I would do anything that required to get clients for product renders or VFX jobs. I was actually building a reel on VFX shots and environments created with USD pipeline but I thought that it takes quite a lot of time and computational power so I choose a lighter nische to get clients from companies so I can acually start my journey on VFX works. Rightnow I'm just coldmailing or sending forms to companies who manufacture electronic devices.
And the reason I'm writing these stuff in this subreddit because I have encountered a lot of bad news about where the VFX industry is going and the unstability that it has. So I'm kinda scared and confused at the same time because I literally don't think that in enginnering or any other field people would have a good time getting jobs in lets say 5 years ?
I think I have enough technical knowledge to stand with the vision that I have for my VFX journey but I have no clue whats going to happen in near future. I think, VFX is not the only industry that people lose their jobs and maybe there are worse industries to be in now ?
I really wanna hear your guys opinion about my journey and also the future in 3D in General.

CFX artist, Junior position ?
Hello, I was wondering if it was common to have junior CFX artists in studios or if it was more common to shift from another department (like FX or Rig) ?

AI-VFX. What I want as a filmmaker.
I realized today what I really want from Ai, as a filmmaker. And I think it's really damn simple and should be achievable.
Basically I want to use actual actors, on camera, and focus on their performances. But I want to use Ai to fill in the background and locations.
So I want Ai to see humans in the shot and just steer clear of them, but only add the elements to the background that are too expensive, cumbersome, annoying to arrange. Background action, locations, animals etc.
I want to be able to build just a table and chairs in a studio, with neutral background, and use AI to create the whole location. Background action, moving cars etc.
This way I get to hold on to my human performances that audiences will connect to, and use Ai to build depth into the shot just help create the setting.
Ditto for PMP. I just want to film people in a moving car, but have Ai totally replace the outside of the car and integrate it with whatever lighting cues we did on the day.

How complex are the skeletons designed under 3-D characters?
I'm trying to build a character, and animal, from the skeleton up, but I'm getting caught up in how complex to make the actual skeleton.
I've seen breakdowns of animal skeletons being either super barebones or really accurate. Is there a standard? Happy medium?
Any insight would be appreciated!

AI-generated depth maps in Continuum 2026: speed boost or loss of control?
In Continuum 2026, Boris FX is using AI to automatically generate depth maps and apply them directly to effects like Depth Wipe ML. Essentially, the plugin infers depth from a 2D shot and uses it for transitions and effects that previously required extra passes, manual setups, or simply weren’t feasible that fast.
Depth maps have always been a sensitive area in VFX: control, accuracy, and frame-to-frame consistency. And that’s where the debate starts:
👉 How are you using AI to move faster in post and VFX without sacrificing quality or letting the tool start making creative decisions for you?

Multiple contracts question
I am a junior in the vfx industry, with almost one year of experience, and I was lucky enough to land a junior role with a studio earlier this year. After the contract finished I applied everywhere and ended up signing a new short term contract with another studio that wasn't really my first choice.
Shortly after starting, I recieved another offer from the studio that is my number 1 dream studio to work at.
I want to handle this professionally and avoid burning bridges. How common is it in VFX to move studios mid contract? Is it better to tell the dream studio I’m already contracted and unavailable until it ends? Or is jumping around a more common thing?
I don’t want to burn any bridges, but I also don’t want to miss what could be my only chance to work at my dream studio.
Looking for advice!

Do any pros use Fedora Workstation?
I'm pretty sure Rocky and Alma are two of the most popular operating systems in the vfx industry? Wondering if Fedora Workstation is ever used, it should be compatible with all the technical pipeline systems and the apps since Rocky/Alma are based on RHEL, which is based on Fedora. Right?

Getting hired on low pay scale
Hello guys, I am senior vfx artist from india and I have been away from vfx field for a while. Since I am trying to get into vfx again but looks like my salary has been an issue for some recruiters. Recently I have heard that big studios in india are hiring artists on 20 to upto 50% less than their previous salary and they also doing same with their former employees.
Would like to know if it's happening with all studios? If it's true then I guess we have reached the end of bridge and this field is dead atleast for senior artists.
Thanks

Tracking Purgatory
I am working inside of 3DE4, this track feels pretty straight forward. I am having a difficult time getting my pixel error below 1.5/having my markers hold in place. This is the closest I have gotten this solve. I have been training to maintain a minimalist approach of having the least possible points tracked to get a solve and it has worked well. But i am curious how to move forward from here. The footage was shot on the iPhone 17 pro max in prores log using the 0.5 lens... I have my focal length set to adjust as I have not adjusted the filmback size. As well as my distortion degree 2 and degree 4 as adjust. Any ideas or insight would be much appreciated

Speaking of Spaz (Steven Williams)
Anybody know how he's doing these days?
He deleted his Reddit account few months ago ...or he got banned by Reddit because of his constant trash talking and bickering? Still remember his fighting with John Knoll on here and his shit-talking about ILM/ Muren.
I hope he at least is (still) completely sober.

VFX of Avatar: Fire and Ash
I haven't seen any post about Avatar 3's VFX.
Having worked on the VFX ,what do you guys think of the VFX?
Any highlight or weak points did you guy spot? or Did you find it consistent through out the movie?
I am also curious to hear if you spotted the sequence that ILM did?
Story wise I think its about time James Cameron pass on the next 2 sequel to another competent director for selfish reason. I want to see him move on to other sci-fi/action movie project.

Action camera for VFX??
Hi everyone! Could you please advise whether it makes sense to buy an action camera (DJI Osmo Action, Insta360 Ace Pro 2) for shooting vertical videos for Instagram?
I’m planning to do tracking and composite 3D objects into the footage. I’m looking for an alternative to an iPhone; mirrorless cameras are not an option for now due to budget limitations.
