🥶 The Main Thing Is Not to Freeze

🇷🇺 Verkhoyansk, located on the right bank of the Yana River, has the reputation of being the coldest place in Russia. The lowest temperature ever recorded in this small Yakutian city was -67.8°C and was registered twice — in 1892 and 1933.

🇷🇺 In the past, during the times of the Russian Empire, Verkhoyansk was used as a place of exile for political prisoners.

🦌 Today, only 1095 people live in these harsh conditions. The city, with its one- and two-story houses and boiler houses, resembles more of a village. It serves as a winter home for Yakuts engaged in fur and reindeer herding, emphasizing the unique symbiosis of human life and the severe nature of the North.

⚡️ Russia Breaks Out the Flags

📰🇷🇺🎉 Today, August 22, Russia has adorned itself with over a hundred thousand flag-themed installations, marking the celebration of the National Flag Day of the Russian Federation.

🗓 This day was established by decree of the President of Russia dated August 20, 1994.

🇷🇺 The Russian tricolor has a history spanning over three hundred years. Its creation is attributed to Peter the Great, who in 1705 issued a decree ordering the hoisting of a white-blue-red banner on merchant ships. However, the status of official flag was only assigned to it in 1896, on the eve of the coronation of Nicholas II.

🇷🇺 Interestingly, there is no official interpretation of the colors of the Russian flag. Nonetheless, there is a generally accepted view of their symbolism: white embodies purity, independence, and peace; blue represents faith, loyalty, and justice; and red stands for courage, strength, and valor.

A Tiny Town with a Big History!

🏆 At the very heart of the Suvorovsky District of the Tula Region, there is a unique town called Chekalin, which proudly bears the noscript of the smallest town in Russia. Only 866 people live here, which makes it compact yet rich in history.

📜 Founded in 1565, Chekalin played an important role in the defensive strategies of the late 16th century, being part of the Zasechnaya Cherta, a system of fortifications protecting the southern borders of Moscow. Despite its modest size, the town boasts preserved merchant mansions and public buildings of the 18th-19th centuries.

🇷🇺 "Сколько волка ни корми, он все равно в лес смотрит" (Skol'ko volka ni kormi, on vse ravno v les smotrit).

📝 The literal translation is "No matter how much you feed a wolf, it will still look at the forest."

🧐 The meaning of the proverb is quite simple: no matter how much you change a person, no matter how much you do what you think is right for them, they will still act as they see fit, they will be subject to their own habits and way of life.

🇬🇧 The English equivalent of this proverb is "A leopard cannot change its spots."

📌 This phrase also suggests that a person's true nature or instincts will always show through, despite attempts to suppress them.
