Being religious doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy this world.

In fact Allah سبحانه و تعالى ordered us to enjoy His blessings but without disobeying Him.

Muhammad 47:24
أَفَلَا يَتَدَبَّرُونَ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ أَمۡ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبٍ أَقۡفَالُهَآ

Do they not then think deeply in the Quran, or are their hearts locked up (from understanding it)?

Allah ta'ālā stated :

"...and among you are some who are sent back to a decrepit (old) age, so that they know nothing after having known (much)..." an-Nahl 16:70

It's reported that the tabi'i 'Ikrimah (رحمه الله) remarked: "one who reads the Qurān would not get to such a state".
sufyān bin ʿuyaynah said:

“i saw al-thawrī in a dream, so i said to him: ‘give me sincere advice’. so he said: ‘minimize your acquaintance with people’.”

[the garden of the sages — ibn ḥibbān 1/81]
‎The Prophet ﷺ, said :

‎“It is not befitting for anyone to prostrate for anyone else. If it were appropriate for anyone to prostrate for another, I would have ordered a wife to prostrate for her husband, due to the enormity of his rights over her.”

‎Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Ḥibbān 4162

Shaykh ul-Islām ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله said:

‎“To speak well is better than remaining silent [about something], and remaining silent from [uttering] evil is better than speaking [about it].”

Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah said:

“The beginning of knowledge is listening, then understanding, then memorising, then acting, and then spreading.”

[Shu’ab al-Īmān, 3/284]
Shaykh saleh al-fawzan حفظه الله said:

‎“The muslim is not safe from fitnah even if he was upon knowledge, good deeds and correct aqeedah.”

Al-Munafiqun 63:9

O you who believe! Let not your properties or your children divert you from the remembrance of Allah. And whosoever does that, then they are the losers.

The Du’aa of Abu Bakr Siddeeq رضي الله عنه when he was praised to his face:

" اللهم لا تؤاخذني بما يقولون ، واجعلني خيرا مما يظنون ، واغفر لي ما لا يعلمون "

“O Allāh, do not take me to account for what they say, and make me better than what they think, and forgive me for what they don’t know.”

You can fool people easily, but if people don’t know your reality, rest assured, Allāh knows it. We can’t fool our creator with our seemingly pious outer appearances and eloquent speech. Never let people’s positive opinions of you get to your head. If this was the Du’aa of the best man to walk the face of the Earth after the Prophets, then what should our attitude be when praised or thought well of?
