Buku, powerful bookmark manager & personal textual mini-web
@takebackourtech | CODE

Ever find something cool on the internet and forget to save it?

In my case I found an alternative repository for Chrome extensions so you wouldn't have to Download it through the Chrome Web Store. Now I'm having a hard time finding it (i have no idea why Google would want to hide it as a result ;)

Thanks to some awesome peeps in the #TBOT XMPP group (tbot@group.chat.above.im) I am going to give buku a try, and start saving more information that crosses my screen.

Buku allows you to save links, tag & organize them. You can do cool things like tag a related group of links, and then open all of them at one time.

There's no tracking, hidden history, obsolete records, usage analytics or homing.

Buku gets around the problem of having multiple incompatible bookmark formats across browsers and provides a standard way to sync bookmarks from any computer. You can even integrate it to save a URL in your clipboard with a keyboard shortcut.

I'll let you know my experiences! And hopefully I find that alternative chrome extension repository I was looking for.

NextCloud Collectives: Collaborative Knowledge Base for Communities & Activists
@takebackourtech | SOURCE

Sharing knowledge across a team can be challenging, typically within our organizations we have used one-off documents. Using a knowledgebase app like NextCloud collectives can be super useful as each document links directly to other documents in the knowledgebase. It allows for different groups to manage their own documents, perfect for organizational methodologies like sociocracy.

Do you think your Freedom Cell or community group would benefit from a shared knowledgebase?

Rhasspy: Open-Source Offline Voice Assistant
@takebackourtech | SOURCE

If there was such a thing as a 'Wise Home' that you could control by voice, it would be powered by a fully offline voice recognition solution. Rhasspy could be that solution, it works well with the leading open source home assistant platforms and supports over 15 languages. It offers a simple template language and produces simple JSON events that software can pick up easily.

New Productivity Tools
@takebackourtech | SOFTWARE

Ever feel like you waste a lot of time? Me too. Time trackers can help you get a realistic view of how much time you're spending on different activities. I decided to try a new one out today doing my preparation for the webinar tomorrow! Rather then asking what I'm doing at specific increments, Super Productivity lets you choose the tasks you're working on and time them out.

Its got break timers and even a cool 'procrastination help' page which I could see being helpful for stressful tasks.

Plus there's no accounts, no registration required, and FOSS. Love it.

LinkWarden

Self-hosted, open-source #bookmark + archive manager to collect, and save websites for offline use.

The objective is to have a self-hosted place to keep useful links in one place, and since useful links can go away (see the inevitability of Link Rot), LinkWarden also saves a copy of the link as screenshot and PDF.

F-Droid Gets Faster Repo Updates with New Repository Format
@takebackourtech | SOURCE

Ever wait forever for F-Droid to 'load' its apps? That's because F-Droid is loading its repository index, which includes a list of all 4056 apps and their metadata (including where to connect to download them).

Good news, F-Droid has just released (March 1st) version 1.16 of the F-Droid client that uses a new repository format. The new app will determine what has changed and download the 'difference' files which contain only the changes. This means you are downloading a file 1/100th of the size.

I just tested the speed differences, the download went from 3 minutes to a few seconds.

Technical details and more info here: https://f-droid.org/en/2023/03/01/new-repo-format-faster-smaller-updates.html

Its also interesting to see that these latest updates were supported by a grant from the Filecoin Foundation - the same organization behind IPFS.

Awesome-totally-open-ChatGPT

A list of open alternatives to ChatGPT

ChatGPT is GPT-3.5 with RLHF (Reinforcement Learning with Human Feedback) for chat system.

By alternative, I mean projects feature different language model for chat system. Projects are not counted if they are:
• alternative frontend projects because they just call the API from OpenAI.
• alternative transformer decoder • models to GPT 3.5 either because the training data of them are (mostly) not for chat system.

Sayboard is an offline FOSS voice keyboard that supports multiple languages. It's a continuation of a prototype developed ontop of the Vosk speech recognition toolkit.

It supports multiple languages and is incredibly easy to use. Although it lacks punctuation, it is accurate in its trannoscription.

Mark this as a huge win for the friendly software space.

🎵 Mousai: Desktop Song Recognition
@takebackourtech | SOURCE

I remember someone asking for a 'Shazam' like app, and now one's come out on Linux desktop.

Although it uses a third party API, I think we're a year away from seeing more open AI models that would could make an app like this self-hosted.

Discover songs you are aching to know with an easy-to-use interface.

Mousai is a simple application that can identify songs similar to Shazam. Just click the listen button, and then wait a few seconds. It will magically return the noscript and artist of that song!

Note: This uses the API of
audd.io, so it is necessary to log in to their site to get more trials.
