US-Trained Somali Forces Kill Dozens Of Civilians In Attack On Village In Southern Somalia

A US-trained Somali government force killed dozens of civilians during an attack on a village in southern Somalia that started Tuesday night and continued until Wednesday morning, according to Somali media reports.

According to the Somali Guardian , the attack targeted the village of Jambaluul, about 40 kilometers west of Mogadishu, and was launched after the arrival of the Alpha Group, a special operations branch of Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency that has received training from the US.

Garowe Online reported similar details, though it said the attack was conducted by the Danab, a special operations force of the Somali military that is armed and trained by the US. Both reports said that more than 30 civilians were killed and that the village was flattened by the attack, which involved artillery fire.

The Somali government said the attack was a “special operation” against al-Shabaab fighters, but residents strongly denied that there were militants in the area. According to Garowe , doctors at a hospital in the nearby town of Afgoye said more than 100 wounded civilians arrived and that some of them were transferred to Mogadishu.

The raid came less than a month after a suspected US airstrike killed 12 civilians , including eight children, in an attack on a village in the southern Jubaland province. The US has conducted a record number of airstrikes in Somalia this year, both against al-Shabaab in southern and central Somalia and against the ISIS affiliate in the northeastern Puntland region, where the US backs local forces.

Cyprus Latest Nation Unwilling To Commit To Gaza ISF, Seeks 'Clarity’ On Mandate

Several regional states are uncomfortable with the idea of being tasked with clashing with Hamas and forcing its disarmament

The Cypriot government is weighing contributing forces to the International Stabilization Force (ISF) for Gaza, but says it requires “clarity” on what exactly the force’s mandate includes.

“We are open to see how we can participate,” Cypriot Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos said in an interview with Al-Monitor, released on 11 December. “Provided we have clarity as to how this has been planned, who is going to be in [the force], how the whole thing will run [and] what are going to be the rules of engagement,” he added.

“We are willing to contribute to the various layers of that force,” the foreign minister went on to say, adding that “Right now, there is not enough clarity about who is going to be participating.”

Kombos also said Cyprus’s military capacity is limited currently due to “the threat we are facing back home because of the Turkish occupation.” Turkiye invaded Cyprus in 1974 after a coup aiming to unify the island nation with Greece.

As a result, Cyprus is now split into Greek and Turkish sides.

US May Require Digital Background Checks For Tourists And Their Families

America’s proposed travel rules could turn a simple vacation application into a government scan of a tourist's digital footprint.

Foreigners planning trips to the United States may soon face one of the most extensive digital disclosure requirements ever introduced at a national border.

Under a new directive from the Trump administration, travelers will have to submit five years of their social media history along with extensive personal data before being allowed entry.

The rule, described in new documents released by US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), affects even citizens of visa waiver countries such as the UK, Germany, and France.

We obtained a copy of the new documents for you here.

What was once a short online form for the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) is set to become a far more intrusive process.

Applicants will be expected to upload a selfie, provide every phone number and email address used over the last five years, and list relatives’ names, addresses, and birth dates. Authorities have stated that compliance will be “mandatory.”

Currently, the ESTA system is relatively straightforward: travelers pay $40 to give basic contact and emergency information, and if approved, receive permission to visit.

The proposed expansion transforms this into a digital audit of a person’s communications.

The move follows an earlier decision by the State Department in June to make some visa holders’ social media profiles publicly viewable.

Officials have justified these changes as a national security measure, saying that online behavior could reveal “anti-American activity.”
