Netanyahu Cancels Trip To Trump’s Inauguration.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will not attend US President-elect Donald Trump’s upcoming inauguration ceremony, The Times of Israel reported on Thursday, citing the prime minister’s senior aide.

Trump will take the oath of office and officially be sworn in as the 47th US president on January 20 at the Capitol in Washington, DC. The Israeli leader had previously been expected to attend the event.

Netanyahu’s senior aide did not elaborate on why the trip was cancelled. However, some media reports cited the Israeli prime minister’s recent prostate surgery, claiming Netanyahu had been advised to rest following the procedure.

The now-cancelled trip to Washington would have been Netanyahu’s first trip abroad since an arrest warrant against him and Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant was issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in November. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice.

The ICC’s decision garnered mixed reactions worldwide, with some countries expressing their intention to comply with the court’s directives, regardless of diplomatic immunity. Hungary, which is a Rome Statute signatory, said it would not enforce the warrant, while the US, which is not party to the ICC, has denounced it.

According to media reports, Trump has been in contact with Netanyahu over the situation in the Middle East, particularly Gaza. The two spoke in December, which both later described as a “very good” and “warm” discussion. Trump later reiterated his public warning that hostages held in Gaza be released before he assumes office or there will be “hell to pay.”

A Hamas official recently stated that the group had approved a list of 34 captives to be freed as part of a potential ceasefire agreement with Israel. Progress, however, has stalled after Palestinian officials reported more than 100 deaths from intensified Israeli airstrikes over the past weekend.

Report: Trump’s Envoy Pressured Netanyahu To Advance Gaza Ceasefire Deal

Israeli media pundits are complaining about the pressure from the incoming Trump administration

President-elect Donald Trump’s incoming Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, leaned hard on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to get him to agree to compromises to advance a Gaza hostage and ceasefire deal, Israeli media reported on Monday.

Witkoff, a real estate investor, flew to Israel from Qatar to meet with Netanyahu on Saturday. The pressure Witkoff put on Netanyahu is being credited for the progress in negotiations in recent days, and officials from all sides are now saying an agreement is close.

According to Haaretz , Witkoff has “forced Israel to accept a plan that Netanyahu had repeatedly rejected over the past half year.” Netanyahu had been pushing for a deal that only involved a temporary ceasefire, but according to the reports, the new plan would involve a full Israeli withdrawal.

However, on Sunday, another report from Haaretz said one of the main disputes in the negotiations was that Israel didn’t want to commit to ending its genocidal war for good, signaling Israel hasn’t agreed to everything.

Reuters reported on Monday that mediators had given Israel and Hamas a final draft deal after a “breakthrough” in the talks and that officials would be discussing it on Tuesday.

South Korea’s Yoon Suk Yeol Arrested After Hours-Long Standoff At Residence

Impeached president being questioned over failed December martial law bid a month after a first arrest attempt ended in stalemate

South Korea’s impeached president, Yoon Suk Yeol, has been arrested and is being questioned over his ill-fated declaration of martial law last month, anti-corruption investigators said on Wednesday, bringing to an end an early-morning standoff outside his official residence in Seoul.

His detention makes him the first sitting president in the nation’s history to be arrested.

Yoon remained defiant, however, saying in a video message before his arrest that he had agreed to cooperate with anti-corruption authorities to “avoid bloodshed” in the latest chapter of a saga that has rocked South Korean politics and triggered concern among its international allies. Yoon claimed the rule of law had “completely collapsed” after his detention.

“President Yoon has decided to personally appear at the Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) today,” his lawyer Seok Dong-hyeon said on Facebook, adding that the impeached leader would also make a speech. But investigators announced shortly afterwards that Yoon had been arrested.

A convoy of vehicles, one of which was presumably carrying Yoon, was seen leaving the presidential residence and later arrived at the offices of the anti-corruption agency heading the investigation. Yoon was later seen entering the offices.

South Korean stocks had a muted reaction to the news, with the blue-chip Kospi
up 0.21% and the small-cap Kosdaq down 0.44%.

The won weakened slightly against the U.S. dollar, and was last trading at 1,459.75. Yield on 10-year benchmark South Korean bonds also rose.

Smotrich Vows To Oppose Ceasefire Deal, Says It’s Time For Israel To ‘Cleanse’ Gaza

The Israeli finance minister was confronted by family members of hostages in Gaza over his opposition to a deal

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich on Monday expressed strong opposition to a hostage and ceasefire deal with Hamas amid reports negotiations are making progress and said it was time for Israel to “occupy and cleanse” the entire Gaza Strip.

“The emerging deal is a catastrophe for the national security of the State of Israel. We will not be part of a surrender deal that would include releasing terrorist hostages, stopping the war and dissolving its achievements that were bought with much blood, and abandoning many hostages,” Smotrich wrote on X.

“This is the time to continue with all our might, to occupy and cleanse the entire Strip, to finally take control of humanitarian aid from Hamas, and to open the gates of hell on Gaza until Hamas surrenders completely and all the hostages are returned,” he added.

Later in the day, family members of hostages in Gaza entered a meeting of Israel’s finance committee that was attended by Smotrich to confront him over his tweet....

🚨🇮🇱🇵🇸 Gaza Ceasefire Sees Last-Minute Delays As Israel 'Disrupts' Deal: Report

Israel has failed to provide maps outlining its withdrawal from Gaza and has not given details on the prisoner exchange mechanism

Israel has given its general approval of the latest draft for a ceasefire and exchange deal in Gaza, but certain “details” have delayed the signing of the agreement, according to an informed Palestinian source cited by Al Mayadeen on 15 January.

Tel Aviv has “not provided details about the prisoner exchange mechanism, nor clarification about how the injured would leave for treatment,” the source, who is familiar with the talks, said.

The source adds that Israel also did not provide a map outlining its withdrawal from Gaza nor about how the management of the Rafah crossing and entry of trucks will take place. Israel is “still disrupting the ceasefire agreement,” he went on to say.

Sources cited by Reuters also confirmed that Hamas has not given its official response to the final draft due to the withdrawal map issue.

However, Israeli media reported on Wednesday that a deal may be signed in the coming hours.

President-elect Donald Trump has announced plans to implement an "External Revenue Service" to collect tariffs, duties, and revenue from foreign nations. This comes as Trump has raised the issue of other nations either reducing the trade deficit with the United States or paying what he calls "their fair share" when it comes to defense, as with the NATO nations.

"For far too long, we have relied on taxing our Great People using the Internal Revenue Service (IRS)," Trump said. "Through soft and pathetically weak Trade agreements, the American Economy has delivered growth and prosperity to the World, while taxing ourselves. It is time for that to change. I am today announcing that I will create the EXTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE to collect our Tariffs, Duties, and all Revenue that come from Foreign sources. We will begin charging those that make money off of us with Trade, and they will start paying, FINALLY, their fair share. January 20, 2025, will be the birth date of the External Revenue Service. Nations that have been in Trump's spotlight include Canada, Mexico and China. Canada and Mexico, close neighbors, have both made overtures to the US and Trump to find ways to prevent the tariffs he proposed from coming into effect. Canada has indicated that they would buy new submarines from the US as a way to balance out the trade deficit.

Stealing Water: Israel's Covert War On Syria, Lebanon, And Jordan

Taking advantage of the chaos following Damascus's fall, Israel's seizure of Syria's Al-Mantara Dam showcases the long-standing Zionist strategy to secure regional water dominance, exacerbating tensions across an already parched West Asia.

At the beginning of January, less than a month after rebel forces seized Damascus and toppled the Syrian government, Israeli occupation forces launched an unchallenged advance extending to the vicinity of the Al-Mantara Dam – a critical water source for Deraa and the largest dam in the region, located in the western countryside of Quneitra.

Reports indicate that Israeli tanks and troops established military outposts, erected earth mounds, and imposed stringent restrictions on local movement, allowing access only during specific, pre-determined times.

Natural resources have always played a pivotal role in shaping geopolitics, and among them, freshwater sources have become increasingly contested. While oil and gas dominate global headlines, the indispensable role of water in agriculture, industry, and daily life makes it an equally critical factor in global stability.

As freshwater resources grow scarcer, the risk of conflict over this precious resource escalates, threatening economic development and social stability.

Ben-Gvir Admits To Replacing Police Leadership With Officers Who Support His Policies

National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir admitted to replacing the entire Israeli police leadership with officers who will carry out his policies.

"I don't only speak with the police commissioner and his generals, I also talk to station commanders, I invite them for interviews," said Ben-Gvir on Friday in Matzav Haruach, a weekly pamphlet popular among the religious Zionist right, distributed across synagogues in Israel.

"I do comprehensive [background checks], if I see these are people who are implementing my policies – they are appointed. If they don't implement them – they are not appointed," the far-right Otzma Yehudit leader wrote.

The minister added that one of the tenets of his policy is demolishing illegally constructed buildings. "A few weeks ago, we razed an entire village. I'm not ashamed of it," he said. "My strategy is one of demolition."

In September, Ben-Gvir, together with Police Commissioner Levy, announced the replacement of all serving police major generals and the appointment of new brigadier generals. As reported in Haaretz, Ben-Gvir spoke with the senior officers prior to their promotion, blatantly asking if they would be loyal to him. In the weeks after the announcement, 18 officers he appointed assumed their new positions.

When asked why he communicates directly with senior commanders, instead of speaking with the police commissioner, Danny Levy, Ben-Gvir said that while he describes his policy directly to them, he does not give them operational guidance or orders. "I don't tell them to 'go and arrest so-and-so, don't do this operation or that operation.'"

'Take It Off!': Palestinian Women Detail Sexual Assault By Israeli Troops During Kamal Adwan Hospital Raid

Israeli soldiers ordered some women and girls to remove their clothes and touched their private parts before forcing them to leave north Gaza

Dozens of Palestinian women and girls reported being sexually abused by Israeli soldiers during the storming of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza last month, Middle East Eye (MEE) reported on 14 January.

Israeli troops blockaded the hospital for nearly three months, preventing the entry of aid, medicine, and food while burning parts of the hospital and heavily bombing its complex and the area around it.

When soldiers entered the hospital, they killed several patients and medical staff and forced the roughly 350 others to leave at gunpoint, telling them to go to southern Gaza.

MEE spoke with 13-year-old Maryam al-Muqayad, who says she was ordered by male Israeli troops to take off her clothes while she was still in the hospital.

The soldiers dragged her by her hair, made her kneel down, and began abusing her.

“We refused to remove our hijabs, so they started exerting more pressure, ordering girls under 20 to move south without their families, but the families refused. They then strip-searched many women and [sexually] harassed them,” Muqayad said.

Israeli soldiers reportedly touched private parts of women and girls while beating those who resisted.

The army then took groups of women and girls to the Al-Fakhoura school in northern Gaza.

“They told us they would film us to show [the world] that Hamas was using us as human shields. When we arrived, they dragged us by our hair across the schoolyard, forced us into toilets, and ordered us to undress,” Muqayad said.

The soldiers then “dragged us back outside by our hair. They threw our clothes at us and made us kneel with our hands raised, then slammed our heads against the walls,” the 13-year-old recounted.

“An Israeli soldier hit a pregnant nurse in the belly with his weapon butt. They searched us and separated children from their parents, then made us walk behind tanks emitting black smoke.”

On 28 December, Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor also reported that Israeli forces sexually assaulted women and girls during their attack on Kamal Adwan Hospital.

One woman told Euro-Med, “A soldier forced a nurse to take off her trousers, then placed his hand on her. When she tried to resist, he struck her hard across the face, causing her nose to bleed.”

Another woman said that a soldier told a woman in their group: “Take it off, or we'll force it off you.”

In another case, a soldier tore the clothes of one woman, exposing her chest.

Another woman recounted being dragged by a soldier who forced her to press against him, saying, “Take it off now,” while making obscene remarks at her.
