PART: 9 (Chapter – 5)

SUNDAY – THEY PERFUMED AND WAITED FOR THE CALAMITY

When it was Sunday morning, they perfumed themselves and sat down in readiness, waiting for the punishment which was going to come to them. They had no idea what is going to befall on them, or from which side it’s going to come.

THE BLAST FROM THE SKY!

After the sun rose, a mighty blast came from the sky, and a quack from their beneath. All souls died and every movement stopped therewith. There were no noises left there. They remained in their houses squatting and lifeless and motionless. It is said that nobody was left alive except a disabled girl, whose name was Kalbah. She was the archenemy of Saleh and when she was the punishment coming, she ran away on her legs and ran fast as anything could run. She came to an Arab tribe and informed them what she has seen of the punishment inflicted upon her people. She asked them water to drink, when she drank she died.

Allah said: “As if they had never dwelt there, for Thamud disbelieved in their Lord, so obliterate Thamud!” (11:68) It seemed as though they had never lived there in such a life of comfort and abundance.

DO NOT ASK FOR THE SIGNS

Imam Ahmad has narrated from Jabir رضي الله عنهwho said: When the Prophet ﷺ passed by the Rocky Tract of Thamud, he said: “Do not ask for signs, as the people of Saleh had asked for it meaning the she-camel. She went for her water from this way and come back from that way. They transgressed against their Lord and slew her. She drank from their water one day and they drank from her milk one day. They slew her and so the Blast which Allah sent upon them from the sky, seized them except one man who was in the Haram of Allah. They asked: Who was that person, O Messenger of Allah? The Prophet ﷺ said: He was Abu Righal, when he came out from the Haram, the same punishment was inflicted upon him which had inflicted his people.”

PROPHET: SALEH (عليه السلام)

PART: 10 (Chapter – 5)

ABU RIGHAL – THE TWIG OF GOLD

It is narrated from Ismail bin Umaiyah, who said that the Prophet ﷺ passed by the grave of Abu Righal and said:
“Do you know who was this Man?”
They said: “Allah and His Messenger know better.” The Prophet then said:
“This is the grave of Abu Righal, a man from Thamud, he was in the Haram, protecting himself. But when he came out of it, the same punishment was inflicted upon him, as what his people suffered from, and so he was buried here. And he was buried with a twig of gold. People went towards the grave and started to dig and search for it with their swords and so they found it.”

SALEH ADDRESSES HIS PEOPLE

And He said: “So Saleh left them and said:
"O my people! I did indeed convey to you the Message of my Lord and I advised you sincerely but you do not love sincere advisers.” (7:79)
When Thamud were destroyed by their affliction of the punishment, Saleh addressed them afterwards and said:
“I tried my best to guide you by every means but you were not a people to accept the truth and wisdom.”

In the same manner our Prophet ﷺ addressed those who were killed in the battle of Badr and were put in the well. He stood there on his mount and said: “O people of the well!
Did you find true what your Lord has promised you?
I have found true what my Lord had promised me.” He said: “How bad a tribe to your Prophet you were! You rejected me when others believed in me and you expelled me out when others gave me refuge. You fought against me when others sided with me, so how bad a tribe of the Prophet to your Prophet you were! Umar رضي الله عنهsaid:
“O Messenger of Allah! Do you address people whose bodies are decayed by now?”
The Prophet ﷺ answered: “I swear by the One n Whose Hand is my soul, you don’t hear what I am saying any better than they do, but they were unable to answer.

It is said that Saleh moved to the Haram of Makkah and stayed there till his death.

THE VALLEY OF ASFAAN

Imam Ahmad has narrated from Ibn Abbas رضي الله عنه who said: When the Prophet passed by the valley of Asfaan on his way to his pilgrimage he said: “O Abu Bakr! Which valley is this?” He replied: “The valley of Asfaan!” The Prophet said “Hud عليه السلام and Saleh عليه السلام passed by it on their young camels whose nosebands were of fibres. Their covering (Izar) was Iba (long cloak), their outer garment was made of wool and they were glorifying Allah by pronouncing Talbiyyah, when they went to perform their pilgrimage.

THE PROPHET ﷺ PASSING THROUGH THE THAMUD’S RUINS

Imam Ahmad has narrated from Abdullah bin Umar saying: When the Prophet ﷺ came with the people to Tabuk, he camped at Al-Hijr near to the houses of Thamud. People drank from the same wells from which Thamud used to drink. They kneaded their flours from the water and prepared to cook. The Prophet ﷺ stopped them. So they threw what was being cooked in their pots and fed the kneaded flour to their camels. Then he departed from that place with them until he came to the well from which the she-camel used to drink. He forbade them to enter those places of people who were punished by Allah and said: “I fear that the same adversity may afflict you which afflicted them, so do not enter their places.”

In another narration it is said that when the Prophet ﷺ passed by their houses, he masked his face and hastened his camel and prohibited the entry of their houses except that one is crying. In another narration he said: “If you could not cry, then pretend that you are crying, fearing that you will be afflicted with what they were afflicted with.”

Imam Ahmad narrated from Muhammad biin Abu Kabshah who narrated from his father who said: When we went for the Battle of Tabuk, people rushed towards the houses of Thamud and entered into them. The news reached to the Prophet ﷺ and so he asked the people to gather at one place. I came to the Prophet ﷺ and he was holding his camel and saying: “You should not enter upon people with whom ALLĀH ﷻ became angry”. A man said: “We are only doing it as a wonder!” The Prophet ﷺ said: “Shall I not tell you about something more astonishing than that?
It is a man from among yourselves informing you about those who were before you, and what is going to happen after you, so you should be steadfast and righteous. ALLĀH ﷻ does not give importance to your punishment and there will come some people who will not care about their deeds.”

It is said that the ages of the people of Thamud were very long. They would build a house of mud and their houses would fall apart before they die. That is why they hew out houses from stones in the mountains.

PROPHET: ABRAHAM - IBRAHIM (عليه السلام)

PART: 1 (Chapter – 6)

HIS LINEAGE

He is Abraham bin Terah (250) bin Nahor (148) bin Serug (230) bin Reu (239) bin Peleg (439) bin Eber (464) bin Shelah (433) bin Arphaxad (438) bin Shem (600) bin Noah عليه السلام
This is how it came in the text of Ahlul-Kitaab (People of the Book) in their Book. The age of every one of them after their names have been mentioned. (Bible, Genesis 11)

A LITTLE BRIEFING

Ibn Asakir has narrated from Ikrimah saying: Abraham was nicknamed as ‘Abu Difan’.

It is said: When his father Terah was 75 years old, Abraham and his brothers Nahor and Haran were born to him. Haran had a son called Lot, [who later became a Prophet].

It is also said that Abraham was the second son of his father and Haran died during the life of his father in the land where he was born in; the land of Chaldeans (Babylonia).

This is the most famous and credible opinion among the historians. Ibn Asakir has authenticated this opinion and said that he was born in Babylon.

Historians have mentioned that Abraham married Sarah. However, she was barren and had no child.

Terah took his son Abraham, his daughter-in-law Sarah, his grandson Lot – the son of Haran and set off from the land of Chaldeans towards the land of Canaan. However, when they stopped at Haran, Terah died there at the age of 250. This shows that he was not born in Haran. His birthplace was Chaldea: the land of Babylonia.

THE NORTH POLE AND THE SEVEN STARS

Then they set off for Canaan, the land of Baitul-Maqdis. They lived for a while in Haran, the land of Chaldeans at that time and then lived in the lands of Arabian Peninsula and Syria. In Syria, people worshiped the seven stars. Those who lived in Damascus were followers of this religion.

They would turn their faces towards the North Pole and worship the seven stars with peculiar rituals involving verbal utterance and physical activities. This is why we find on each of the seven ancient gates of Damascus an altar for each of those stars. They celebrated them and offered their sacrifices to them.

So the people of Haran also worshiped stars and idols. And so there were no believers except Abraham, his wife Sarah and his nephew Lot.

PROPHET: ABRAHAM - IBRAHIM (عليه السلام)

PART: 2 (Chapter – 6)

It was Prophet Abraham whom Allah appointed for the purpose of eliminating those evils of that time. Allah granted him wisdom in his childhood and sent him as His Messenger and made him as His Friend in his old age. Allah says: “And We bestowed upon Abraham before, his rectitude of conduct and We knew about him well.” (21:51)

Meaning that We knew well before, that he was well-placed and eligible for this rectitude of conduct and Rushd (guidance).

Allah says: And (remember) Ibrahim (Abraham) when he said to his people: "Worship Allah (Alone), and fear Him, that is better for you if you did but know. "You worship besides Allah only idols, and you only invent falsehood. Verily, those whom you worship besides Allah have no power to give you provision, so seek your provision from Allah (Alone), and worship Him (Alone), and be grateful to Him. To Him (Alone) you will be brought back."And if you deny, then nations before you have denied (their Messengers). And the duty of the Messenger is only to convey (the Message) plainly."

See they not how Allah originates creation, then repeats it. Verily, that is easy for Allah.

Say: "Travel in the land and see how (Allah) originated creation, and then Allah will bring forth (resurrect) the creation of the Hereafter (i.e. resurrection after death). Verily, Allah is Able to do all things." He punishes whom He will, and shows mercy to whom He will, and to Him you will be returned. And you cannot escape in the earth or in the heaven. And besides Allah you have neither any Wali (Protector or Guardian) nor any Helper.

And those who disbelieve in the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allah and the Meeting with Him, it is they who have no hope of My Mercy, and it is they who will (have) a painful torment. So nothing was the answer of [Ibrahim's (Abraham)] people except that they said: "Kill him or burn him." Then Allah saved him from the fire. Verily, in this are indeed signs for a people who believe. And [Ibrahim (Abraham)] said: "You have taken (for worship) idols instead of Allah, and the love between you is only in the life of this world, but on the Day of Resurrection, you shall disown each other, and curse each other, and your abode will be the Fire, and you shall have no helper."

So Lout (Lot) believed in him [Ibrahim's (Abraham) Message of Islamic Monotheism]. He [Ibrahim (Abraham)] said: "I will emigrate for the sake of my Lord. Verily, He is the All-Mighty, the All-Wise."

And We bestowed on him [Ibrahim (Abraham)], Ishaque (Isaac) and Ya'qub (Jacob), and ordained among his offspring Prophethood and the Book [i.e. the Taurat (Torah) (to Musa - Moses), the Injeel (Gospel) (to 'Iesa - Jesus), the Qur'an (to Muhammad ), all from the offspring of Ibrahim (Abraham)], and We granted him his reward in this world, and verily, in the Hereafter he is indeed among the righteous. PART: 3 (Chapter – 6)

ABRAHAM AND HIS FATHER

His first call was directed towards his father, who worshiped idols. As a father, he deserved most sincere advice. Allah said in the Qur’an: mention in the Book (the Qur'an) Ibrahim (Abraham). Verily! He was a man of truth, a Prophet. When he said to his father: "O my father! Why do you worship that which hears not, sees not and cannot avail you in anything? "O my father! Verily! There has come to me of knowledge that which came not unto you. So follow me. I will guide you to a Straight Path. "O my father! Worship not Shaitan (Satan). Verily! Shaitan (Satan) has been a rebel against the Most Beneficent (Allah)."O my father! Verily! I fear lest a torment from the Most Beneficent (Allah) overtake you, so that you become a companion of Shaitan (Satan) (in the Hell-fire)."
[Tafsir Al-Qurtubi] (19: 41-45)

He (the father) said: "Do you reject my gods, O Ibrahim (Abraham)? If you stop not (this), I will indeed stone you. So get away from me safely before I punish you." Ibrahim (Abraham) said: "Peace be on you! I will ask Forgiveness of my Lord for you. Verily! He is unto me, Ever Most Gracious. "And I shall turn away from you and from those whom you invoke besides Allah. And I shall call on my Lord; and I hope that I shall not be unblessed in my invocation to my Lord." (19:46-48)

In this above mentioned Verse, Allah has mentioned the conversation and argument that went on between him and his father. He has mentioned how Abraham invited his father towards the way of Truth in gentleness and politeness. He explained to him why he was wrong in worshiping idols which neither have the capability to hear what its worshipers invoke them for, nor could they see. How, then, could they avail anybody’s needs, or provide them with provision or help? Then Abraham told his father about what Allah has bestowed upon him of guidance and beneficial knowledge for the guidance of mankind, though he was younger in his age than his father. He said:
“O my father! I have received such knowledge as has not come to you, so follow me and I will guide you to the Straight Path.” (19:43).
Meaning a way which is clear and easy, which leads you straight towards Allah, and which brings all the goodness of this life and the life in the Hereafter.

الإمام ابن كثير ‎ - قصص الأنبياء

PROPHET: ABRAHAM - IBRAHIM (عليه السلام)

PART: 4 (Chapter – 6)

When Abraham offered his father the Divine guidance and sincere advice, he rejected them, and threatened to stone him if he did not cease from it. “O Abraham? Surely, if you do not relent, I shall stone you and now leave me alone for a good long time.” (19:46) Abraham replied to him: “Peace be upon you.” He said to his father: No harm will reach you from my side, nor would you face any insult. You are safe as far as I am concerned. Instead, you would see good from me: “I will pray to my Lord to forgive you; indeed, He is to me the Most Gracious.” (19:47)

Ibn Abbas said: The word Hafiyya in the Verse means kind and gentle, which meant Allah was Kind to me in granting me His guidance to worship Him and to worship Him in proper way, and so he said: “I am leaving you and those whom you invoke besides Allah. I will invoke my Lord, that I may be blessed in my invocation.”

And indeed Abraham sought forgiveness from Allah for his father, as he promised to him. However, when it became clear to him that he was an enemy to Allah, he dissociated himself from him as the Qur’an said: “And Abraham’s act of seeking forgiveness for his father was only because of a promise he had made to him. But when it became clear to him that he was an enemy to Allah, he dissociated himself from him. Surely, Abraham was most tender-hearted, forbearing.”

It is narrated from Abu Hurairah who reported from the Prophet ﷺ saying: “Abraham will meet his father Azar on the Day of Judgement and he will se his face miserable and full of dust. Abraham would say to him: ‘Did I not tell you that you should not disobey me?’ His father would reply to him: ‘Today I shall not disobey you.’ Abraham would answer to him: ‘O Lord! You promised me that You shall not disgrace me on the Day of Judgement. So today there is no disgrace greater than the disgrace of my father being away from me.’ Allah would say then: ‘I have made the Paradise forbidden for the disbelievers.’ Then it would be said: ‘O Abraham! What is under your feet? Then, he will look, only to find a stained sacrifice (Dhikh- A hyena). It will be taken by its legs and thrown in the Hell-fire.”
(Al-Bukhari 3350)
[His father shall be transformed into a Hyena and thrown in the Hell-Fire]

“And when Abraham said to his father Aazar: Do you take idols for gods? Indeed, I see you and your people in manifest error.”

This Verse shows that the name of the father of Abraham was Aazar. However, the majority of genealogists, including Ibn Abbas, say that his name was Terah, while Ahlul-Kitaab (People of the Book) also say Terah. So, it is suggested that Aazar was the name of the idol his father worshiped and he was nicknamed after it.

Ibn Jarir says: The correct opinion is that his name was Aazar and perhaps he had two names. Or one of them is his name and the other is his nickname.

الإمام ابن كثير ‎ - قصص الأنبياء

PROPHET: ABRAHAM - IBRAHIM (عليه السلام)

PART: 5 (Chapter – 6)

THE STAR, THE MOON, THE SUN – CELESTIAL BODIES!

“Thus We did show Abraham the dominion of the heavens and the earth, that he would be certain in his Faith. When the night outspread over him, he saw a star, and said: ‘This is my Lord’. But when it set, he said: ‘I do not love the one which set.’ When he saw the moon shining full, he said: ‘This is my Lord.’ But when the moon set, he said: ‘Unless my Lord guides me, I shall be among those who go astray.’ When he saw the sun rise, he said: ‘This is my Lord, this is greater.’ But when the sub set, he said: ‘O my people! Surely, I am free of that which you associate with God.’” (6:75-78)

THE ARGUMENTATION BETWEEN ABRAHAM AND HIS PEOPLE

He showed them [and through them to all mankind], that those celestial bodies which they observe, whether during the day or night, are not fit to be God or Divine. They do not deserve to be worshiped besides Allah, because they are only creatures that are cared for, directed and controlled. They rise and they set and disappear. While Allah is the Almighty, nothing could disappear nor can hide from Him. He is Everlasting and Eternal, and there is no God or Lord (worthy of worship) besides Him.

First, he explained to them that stars are not fit for this status (of being worshiped). Then, he moved to the moon that is brighter and more beautiful than the stars. Thereafter, he moved to the sun that is the brightest and most beautiful of the celestial bodies and explained that even it was subjected and controlled. Allah says: “And of His signs are the night and the day, and the sun and the moon, prostrate not to the sun and the moon, but prostrate yourselves to Allah, Who created them, if it is He that you worship.”

إِنِّي وَجَّهْتُ وَجْهِيَ لِلَّذِي فَطَرَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ حَنِيفًا وَمَا أَنَا مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ

That is why Allah said: “When he saw the sun rise (the word ‘Bazighatan’ denotes here to rise) he said: ‘This is my Lord, this is greater.’ But when the sun set, he said: ‘O my people! Surely, I am free of that which you associate (with Allah).
I have turned my face sincerely to Allah, the One Who created the heavens and the earth, I shall not be of those who associate partners (with Allah).’ His people argued with him.

He said: ‘Do you dispute with me with regard to Allah, when He has guided me? I fear not that which you associate with Him, unless my Lord wills otherwise.’” (6:78-80).
He said that I do not care about these gods which you worship besides Allah, because they cannot benefit or harm anyone, nor can they hear or understand anything. They are creatures of Allah, subjected to Him, like the stars; or they are manufactured, hewed out of stones or carved out of woods.

Matter of Isolating Oneself and Not Mixing with People :

It is the Requirement for Us to go Out of the House and Mixing with People for Upholding ties of Kinship, Earning Money so That we can Live, Seeking Knowledge, Enjoining what is Good, Forrbidding what is Evil, and so On...

•Umar Ibn al-Khaṭṭāb Radi Allāhu anhu Said: The Messenger of ALLĀH ﷻ Prophet Muhammad ﷺ Said:

The Believer Who Mixes with People and Bears their Annoyance with Patience will have a Greater Reward than the one Who does Not Mix with People and does Not Put up with their Annoyance.

~[Narrated by al-Tirmidhi (5207) ]

•Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah Rahimahullah Said:

The Fact of the Matter is that Mixing may sometimes be Obligatory or Mustahab. An Individual may be Enjoined to mix with others Sometimes and to Remain Alone sometimes. That Depends on the Purpose.
