“Life of the heart is in:
فَحَيَاةُ الْقَلْبِ

Constant remembrance (of Allāh),
بِدَوَامِ الذِّكْرِ،

Returning back to Allāh,
وَالْإِنَابَةِ إِلَى اللَّهِ،

And abandoning sins.”

Abū Ma'mar reported that Sufyān Ibn Uyaynah (may Allāh have mercy on him) said:
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مَعْمَرٍ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ بْنِ عُيَيْنَةَ قَالَ:

“The 'Ālim (person of knowledge) is not the one who knows the good and evil,
لَيْسَ الْعَالِمُ الَّذِي يَعْرِفُ الْخَيْرَ مِنَ الشَّرِّ،

Verily the 'Ālim is one who knows the good and follows it,
إِنَّمَا الْعَالِمُ الَّذِي يَعْرِفُ الْخَيْرَ، فَيَتَّبِعُهُ

And knows the evil so he stays away from it.”
وَيَعْرِفُ الشَّرَّ فَيَجْتَنِبُهُ \"

As for the statement: “It is obligatory upon the general people to blind-follow so and so, or so and so”,
وَأَمَّا أَنْ يَقُولَ قَائِلٌ: إنَّهُ يَجِبُ عَلَى الْعَامَّةِ تَقْلِيدُ فُلَانٍ أَوْ فُلَانٍ

Then this is not said by a Muslim.
فَهَذَا لَا يَقُولُهُ مُسْلِمٌ.

“Whoever wants to convey a statement from people,

“Indeed many people have gone astray due to turning away from the proofs and relying upon men.
وَلَقَدْ زَلَّ - بِسَبَبِ الْإِعْرَاضِ عَنِ الدَّلِيلِ وَالِاعْتِمَادِ عَلَى الرِّجَالِ -

Due to that, they left the way of the Sahābah and Tabi’īn,
أَقْوَامٌ خَرَجُوا بِسَبَبِ ذَلِكَ عَنْ جَادَّةِ الصَّحَابَةِ وَالتَّابِعِي

And followed their desires without knowledge, so they went astray from the correct path.”

“The corruptions of bid'ah are not recognized except by those people of clear insight.

Ibrāhīm bin Abdulwahid advised Al-Dhia al-Maqdisi when he wanted to travel for knowledge: “Increase your recitation of the Qur'ān and do not leave it; for what you seek will be facilitated to you by the amount you read.”
قَالَ: وأوصاني وقت سفري، فَقَالَ: أَكْثَر من قراءة الْقُرْآن، ولا تتركه فَإِنَّهُ يتيسر لَك الَّذِي تطلبه عَلَى قدر مَا تقرأ

Al-Dhia said, “I saw this and have tried it a lot, when I would read (the Qur'ān) a lot, it was facilitated for me to hear the hadīth and write a lot of it, and if I did not read, it was not facilitated for me”
قَالَ: فرأيت ذَلِكَ وجربته كثيرا، فكنت إِذَا قرأت كثيرا تيسر لي من سماع الْحَدِيث وكتابته الكثير، وإذا لَمْ أقرأ لَمْ يتيسر لي.

Abū Hurayra (may Allāh be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ عَمْرٍو قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ حَلْحَلَةَ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ، وَأَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ:

“A Muslim does not encounter fatigue,
«مَا يُصِيبُ الْمُسْلِمَ مِنْ نَصَبٍ،

Tiredness,
وَلَا وَصَبٍ،

Concern,
وَلَّاهَمٍّ،

Sorrow,
وَلَا حَزَنٍ،

Injury,
وَلَا أَذًى،

Or grief,
وَلَا غَمٍّ،

Or even a thorn which pricks him,
حَتَّى الشَّوْكَةُ يُشَاكُهَا،

Without Allāh expiating his sins for him by that.”
إِلَّا كَفَّرَ اللَّهُ بِهَا مِنْ خَطَايَاهُ»

Ibn Abbās and a group of Companions of the Prophet ﷺ narrated that
وَلَكِنْ حَكَى السُّدِّيُّ، عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ، وَأَبِي مَالِكٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، وَعَنْ مُرَّةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ، وَعَنْ نَاسٍ مِنَ الصَّحَابَةِ أَنَّهُمْ قَالُوا:

When Iblīs was sent out of Paradise,
أُخْرِجَ إِبْلِيسُ مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ،

And Ādam was accommodated therein, Ādam was alone in Paradise and did not have a partner from whom he could get tranquility.
وَأُسْكِنَ آدَمُ الْجَنَّةَ فَكَانَ يَمْشِي فِيهَا وَحْشًا، لَيْسَ لَهُ فِيهَا زَوْجٌ يَسْكُنُ إِلَيْهَا

He slept for some time,
فَنَامَ نَوْمَةً

And when he woke up, he saw a woman whom Allāh had created from his ribs.
فَاسْتَيْقَظَ وَعِنْدَ رَأْسِهِ امْرَأَةٌ قَاعِدَةٌ خَلَقَهَا اللَّهُ مِنْ ضِلْعِهِ،

So he asked her, “Who are you?”
فَسَأَلَهَا مَنْ أَنْتِ؟

She replied, “A woman.”
قَالَتْ: امْرَأَةٌ.

He asked: “Why have you been created?”
قَالَ: وَلِمَا خُلِقْتِ؟ .

She said: “So that you could find comfort in me.”
قَالَتْ: لِتَسْكُنَ إِلَيَّ.

The angels, trying to find out the extent of his knowledge, asked him: “What is her name O Ādam?”
فَقَالَتْ لَهُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ يَنْظُرُونَ مَا بَلَغَ مِنْ عِلْمِهِ: مَا اسْمُهَا يَا آدَمُ.

He replied, “Hawā (Eve).”
قَالَ: حَوَّاءُ.

They asked “Why was she named Hawā?”
قَالُوا: وَلِمَ كَانَتْ حَوَّاءَ؟

He replied, “Because she was created from something living.”
قَالَ: لِأَنَّهَا خُلِقَتْ مِنْ شَيْءٍ حَيٍّ.

When I come across one I have not seen before it is as though I have come across a treasure.
وإذا رأيت كتابًا لم أره فكأني وقعت على كنز،

And I have looked at the catalogue of books donated to the institution of higher education,
ولقد نظرت في ثبت الكتب الموقوفة في المدرسة النظامية؛

And it contained around six thousand volumes,
فإذا به يحتوي على ستة آلاف مجلد،

And at the index of the books of Abū Hanifah,
وفي ثبت كتب أبي حنيفة،

And al-Humaydī,
وكتب الحميدي،

And the books of our Shaykh Abdul-Wahhāb,
وكتب شيخنا عبد الوهاب،

And Ibn Nāsir,
وابن ناصر،

And those of Abī Muḥammad ibn al-Shakhkhāb,
وأبي محمد الشخاب،

And they were most numerous,
وكانت أحمالًا،

And every other book I could get my hands on,
وغير ذلك من كل كتاب أقدر عليه،

And if I said: I have read twenty thousand volumes, it would actually be more than that.
ولو قلت: إني طالعت عشرين ألف مجلد، كان أكثر

أَخْبَرَنَا الشَّرِيفُ أَبُو الْفَتْحِ الْعُمَرِيُّ , أنبأ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ أَبِي شُرَيْحٍ الْهَرَوِيُّ , أنبأ أَبُو الْقَاسِمِ الْبَغَوِيُّ , ثنا دَاوُدُ بْنُ رُشَيْدٍ , ثنا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ , ثنا شَيْبَانُ , عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ , عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ مُسْهِرٍ , عَنْ خَرَشَةَ بْنِ الْحُرِّ قَالَ:

A man bore witness to ‘Umar Ibn Al-Khattāb (may Allāh be pleased with him)
شَهِدَ رَجُلٌ عِنْدَ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ بِشَهَادَةٍ ,

So ‘Umar said to him: “I do not know you, but it does not matter that I do not know you. Bring me someone who does know you.”
فَقَالَ لَهُ: \" لَسْتُ أَعْرِفُكَ , وَلَا يَضُرُّكَ أَنْ لَا أَعْرِفَكَ , ائْتِ بِمَنْ يَعْرِفُكَ \" ,

A man among the people said: “I know him.”
فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ: أَنَا أَعْرِفُهُ ,

‘Umar asked: “What do you know about him?”
قَالَ: \" بِأِيِّ شَيْءٍ تَعْرِفُهُ؟ \"

He said: “He is of good character and is virtuous.”
قَالَ: بِالْعَدَالَةِ وَالْفَضْلِ ,

‘Umar asked: “Is he your neighbour who you know by night and by day, and you know when he comes in and goes out?”
فَقَالَ: \" فَهُوَ جَارُكَ الْأَدْنَى الَّذِي تَعْرِفُ لَيْلَهَ وَنَهَارَهَ , وَمَدْخَلَهُ وَمَخْرَجَهُ؟ \"

The man said: “No.”
قَالَ: لَا،

‘Umar asked: “Did he have any financial dealings with you which is the way to know whether he is God-fearing or not?”
قَالَ: \" فَمُعَامِلُكَ بِالدِّينَارِ وَالدِّرْهَمِ اللَّذَيْنِ بِهِمَا يُسْتَدَلُّ عَلَى الْوَرَعِ؟ \"

The man said: “No.”
قَالَ: لَا،

‘Umar then asked: “Has he been your companion on a journey, which is the best way to know whether he is of noble character and attitude?”
قَالَ: \" فَرَفيِقُكَ فِي السَّفَرِ الَّذِي يُسْتَدَلُّ عَلَى مَكَارِمِ الْأَخْلَاقِ؟ \"

The man said: “No.”
قَالَ: لَا،

So ‘Umar said: “Then you do not know him.”
قَالَ: \" لَسْتَ تَعْرِفُهُ \"

“And their father was righteous...” [Al-Kahf: 82]
وَكَانَ أَبُوهُمَا صَالِحًا}

Ibn `Abbās (may Allāh be pleased with him) said, “They were protected by the righteousness of their father.”
قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ: حُفِظَا بِصَلَاحِ أَبَوَيْهِمَا.

Sa'īd ibn al-Mūsāyab said, “I pray, then when I remember my child, I increase in my prayers.”
قَالَ سَعِيدُ بْنُ الْمُسَيَّبِ: إِنِّي لَأُصَلِّي فَأَذْكُرُ وَلَدِي فَأَزِيدُ فِي صَلَاتِي.
