'Abdullāh ibn Aḥmad reported that he heard his father (Imām Aḥmad) supplicate in his prostration:
وَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ: سَمِعْت أَبِي يَقُولُ فِي سُجُودِهِ:

“Oh Allāh as you have protected my face from prostrating to other than You, protect my face from asking other than You.”

'Imraān al-Qomī narrated:
عن سعيد الجريري عن عمران القمي قال

A man came to Hudhayfah (may Allāh be pleased with him) and said:
جاء رجل إلى حذيفة فقال

“O Aba 'Abdullāh, I fear that I am a munāfiq (hypocrite).”
يا أبا عبد الله إني أخشى أن أكون منافقا

So he (may Allāh be pleased with him) asked him, “Do you (sometimes) pray when no one is around? And do you seek forgiveness whenever you sin?”
قال تصلي إذا خلوت وتستغفر إذا أذنبت

The man replied: “Yes.”
قال نعم

So Hudhayfah (may Allāh be pleased with him) said: “Go! For Allāh did not make you a munāfiq.”
قال اذهب فما جعلك الله منافقا

التقي العاقل لا يتباهى بتقواه

Tāhir bin Hussain al-Marwazī asked someone: “How long have you been in Iraq?”
قال طاهر بن الحسين للمروزي: منذ كم دخلت العراق؟

He replied: “Twenty years, and I have been fasting for thirty.”
قال: منذ عشرين سنة وإني أصوم الدهر منذ ثلاثين سنة،

Tāhir remarked, “I asked one question and you gave me two answers.”
قال طاهر: سألتك عن مسألة فأجبتني عن مسألتين.

Yūnus ibn 'Ubayd said: Imām ash-Shāfi'ī one day said to me:
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الْبَغْدَادِيُّ الْوَرَّاقُ ثنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنُ زِيَادٍ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ يُونُسَ بْنَ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى، يَقُولُ: قَالَ لِي الشَّافِعِيُّ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ:

“O Yūnus, if you have a friend who aids you upon obedience, tighten your grip on him.
\" يَا يونُسُ إِذَا كَانَ لَكَ صَدِيقٌ فَشُدَّ يَدَيْكَ بِهِ

Taking a friend is difficult and leaving one is easy.”
فَإِنَّ اتِّخَاذَ الصَّدِيقِ صَعْبٌ وَمُفَارَقَتُهُ سَهْلٌ.

“However; some of the people; you will find him attempting to join his ankle with the ankle of his companion,
لكن بعض الناس تجده يحاول أن يلصق كعبه بكعب صاحبه،

As for what is above – then there is a gap between them both;
وأما من فوق فبينهما فرجة؛

As he has opened his two legs, and so it is necessarily the case that he will open (widen) that which is between the two shoulders.
لأن يفتح رجليه، وبالضرورة سوف ينفتح ما بين الكتفين.

The Sunnah is to be close together and to be equally straight – as is possible,
والسنة هي التراص والتساوي بقدر الإمكان،

And in a way that does not cause harm,
وعلى وجه لا يؤذي؛

Because being close together in a way in which causes harm also without doubt has not been stated in the legislation,
لأن التراص الذي يؤذي أيضاً لاشك أنه غير وارد شرعاً

However the act of being close through which the gaps are filled;
لكن التراص الذي يحصل به سد الخلل

Then this is what is desired.”
هذا هو المطلوب.

As for the qawl (ie: saying of) baʿḍ al-nās min al-sufahāʾ (ie: some of the foolish people):
وأما قول بعض الناس من السفهاء:

“(That) it is not wājib (ie: obligatory) to obey the rulers unless they are completely upright.”
إنه لا تجب علينا طاعة وُلاة الأمور إلا إذا استقاموا استقامة تامة،

This is a mistake,
فهذا خطأ،

And this is wrong,
وهذا غلط،

This is not from the Sharīʿah (ie: Islāmic legislation) at all,
وهذا ليس من الشرع في شيء،

Rather this is from the maḏhab (ie: way of) al-Khawārij.
بل هذا من مذهب الخوارج،

who wish from the rulers to be upright upon the Command of Allah in every affair.

Shaykh 'Allāmah Zayd Al-Madkhali (may Allāh have mercy on him) said (in a poem on coffee):
قال الشيخ العلامة زيد المدخلي رحمه الله

“Coffee -Bunn- is refreshing for the bodies,
وقهوةُ البُنِّ للأبدانِ مُنْعِشةٌ

Its taste is enjoyable like dough and honey,
مذاقُهَا مُمتعٌ كالبُرِ والعسلِ

The companion of life, in travel it is friendly,
رفيقةُ العُمْرِ في الأسفارِ مُؤنسةٌ

Like the smell of musk when it spreads undoubtedly.
كنفحةِ المِسْكِ إن فاحتْ بلَا جدلِ

And (it is) aspired by the soul in a delightful morning,
وبُغْيةُ النَّفسِ في الإصْبَاح مُبهجةٌ

It pleases a companion when it is served at the time of leisure.
تَسُرُّ إلْفًا مَتَى جاءَتْ على مَهَلِ

O if one could have a cup [of coffee] made by an expert,
ِيا حبَّذا الشِرْبَ إنْ صاغتهُ ماهِرةٌ

To honour [with it] the guest who arrives and the traveler,
لِتُكْرِمَ الضَّيْفَ مِـنْ آتٍ ومُرْتحِل

In every house it is mentioned in excellence,
في كُـلِّ بيتٍ لَهَا ذِكْرٌ ومَنْقَبَةٌ

It causes a companion to laugh with friendliness without foolishness,
تُضَاحِكُ الخِلَّ إينَاساً بِلا خَطَلِ

It says ‘marhaban (welcome)’ and smiles for a long time,
تقولُ مرحى وطول الوقتِ بَاسِمَةٌ

It repeats the welcome; of high value and example,
تُعِيدُ مَرْحَى رَفيعَ القَـدْرِ والمُثُلِ

There is no blame in it and it is free of intoxicants,
لا عيب فيهــا ومِنْ غَوْلٍ مُبَرَّأَةٌ

So drink it purely and do not fear any illness.”
فاشْربها صِرْفًا ولا تخشى من العِلَلِ”

Abū Hurayrah (may Allāh be pleased with him) reported:
3366 ـ أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ: حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمِنْهَالِ الضَّرِيرُ: حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ: حَدَّثَنَا رَوْحِ بْنِ الْقَاسِمِ , عَنِ ابْنِ عَجْلَانَ , عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ , عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ:

The Prophet ﷺ ordered with charity,
أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى الله عليه وسلم - حَثَّ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ عَلَى الصَّدَقَةِ ,

So a man said: “Oh Messenger of Allāh, I have a dinār (where do I spend it)?”
فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! عِنْدِي دِينَارٌ؟

So he ﷺ said: “Spend it on yourself.”
فَقَالَ:((تَصَدَّقْ بِهِ عَلَى نَفْسِكِ)).

The man said: “I have another (where do I spend it?)?”
قَالَ: عِنْدِي آخَرُ؟

So he ﷺ said: “Spend it on your child.”
قَالَ:((تَصَدَّقْ بِهِ عَلَى وَلَدِكَ)).

The man said: “I have another (where do I spend it)?”
قَالَ: عِنْدِي آخَرُ؟

So he ﷺ said: “Spend it on your wife.”
قَالَ:((تَصَدَّقْ بِهِ عَلَى زَوْجَتِكَ)).

So the man continued asking the Prophet ﷺ: “I have another dinār (where do I spend it)?”
قَالَ: عِنْدِي آخَرُ؟

So he ﷺ said: “Spend it on your servant.”
قَالَ:((تَصَدَّقْ بِهِ عَلَى خَادِمِكَ)).

The man said: “I have another.”
قَالَ: عندي آخر؟

So he ﷺ said: “You see best [where to spend it].”
قال: ((أنت أبصر)).

Whoever is used to seeking revenge and is not patient,
أن من اعتاد الانتقام ولم يصبر،

He will certainly fall into oppression.
لابد أن يقع في الظلم،

For one's self is such, that it does not limit itself to the proportion of justice that is required.
فإن النفس لا تقتصر على قدر العدل الواجب لها.

Al-Mutawallī and other than him said:
قَالَ الْمُتَوَلِّي وَغَيْرُهُ

“If the fasting person rinses his mouth he has to spit out the water,
إذَا تَمَضْمَضَ الصَّائِمُ لَزِمَهُ مَجُّ الْمَاءِ

He does not have to dry his mouth with a piece of cloth or the like.
وَلَا يَلْزَمُهُ تَنْشِيفُ فَمِهِ بِخِرْقَةٍ

We know of no ikhtilāf (scholarly dispute) on this.”
وَنَحْوِهَا بِلَا خِلَافٍ

“The truth is that which the first Jamā'ah were upon from the time of the Prophet ﷺ and his Sahābah (Companions).
الحق هو الذي كانت عليه الجماعة الأولى من عهد النبي - صلى الله عليه وسلم - وأصحابه،

And there is no consideration for the plentifulness of the people of falsehood after them.”
ولا نظر إلى كثرة أهل الباطل بعدهم.
