The Kemalist Republican People's Party, Erdogan's opposition, has significantly strengthened its influence after its earlier win in municipal elections in Turkey this year. The Party has expressed its desire to normalize relations with Syria as soon as they come to power, as part of a strategy to resolve ongoing refugee problems, economic crisis and internal security.
The party's vice president for foreign policy, Ilhan Ozgil, said Damascus had set conditions for normalizing relations with Ankara, primarily the withdrawal of Turkish troops from northern Syria.
Ozgil noted that his party can contact Assad at any time, but Turkish troops cannot withdraw from Syria the next day, when the CHP wins the elections, without solving the security problem, which Ankara sees in a pro-Kurdish quasi-state entity across the border.
