A regional prosecutor, Dimas Jiménez y Jiménez, told reporters at a press conference that the authorities were considering charges including human trafficking, forced pregnancy, mistreatment of minors, and rape.
"We suspect these crimes were committed by a member of the community," said Mr. Jiménez y Jiménez.
Officials also said that a deputy commissioner of the National Civil Police, Manuel Salvador Aldana Monzón, was arrested on Friday evening in connection with the case. He was accused of passing confidential information to one of the leaders of Lev Tahor and may have acted as an informant on police operations, it was said.
The authorities had previously attempted to conduct raids in the community but were always hindered in one way or another, said Lucrecia Prera, the head of the Attorney General's Office for Children and Youth, in an interview.
The officials had entered the site a few times but could only see the areas made accessible to them by the leaders. Community members, said Ms. Prera, performed ceremonial dances and surrounded the officials to prevent them from moving.
The raid on Friday took place after four non-Guatemalan minors fled the community in November and alerted the authorities. From their statements and evidence available to the officials, including medical examinations, "we were able to determine that these minors were indeed victims of human trafficking," said the special prosecutor for human trafficking, Nancy Lorena Paiz García, to reporters.
