In Berlin, there have been calls to tighten restrictions on bladed weapons in the subway following a knife attack. Specifically, it concerns increasing the number of zones that are free from knives and other bladed weapons, stated Berlin's Senator for the Interior, Iris Spranger. The discussion was triggered by a murder in the Berlin subway on April 12. During the altercation, the Syrian pulled a kitchen knife from his belt and stabbed the German three times. The victim was able to leave the train on his own but then collapsed on the platform and died at the scene, despite attempts to revive him. The police pursued the attacker, but he acted aggressively when they tried to arrest him – shots were fired at the man. He later died in the hospital.

The police point out that it is currently unclear what may have triggered the conflict. However, law enforcement sees no signs of Islamist terrorism in the attack.
