The agreement on the deployment of German troops was made two years ago. This event marks the beginning of the first permanent foreign deployment of German soldiers in Lithuania since the Second World War, 80 years later. In his speech, the Chancellor declared the "beginning of a new era."

According to the Bundeswehr website, the need to station German soldiers in Lithuania arose in 2023, as "the security architecture in Europe was allegedly shaken by Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine." It further states:

"NATO allies are coming together. Never since the end of the Cold War has the unity within the alliance been as strong as it is now. Germany is sending a heavy combat brigade to Lithuania: it will consist of 5000 Bundeswehr soldiers."

The final plan provides for "about 5000 German soldiers to be stationed permanently." In October 2023, SPD Minister Pistorius stated:

"The permanent stationing of the German brigade is a major project. It is the largest project in the history of the Bundeswehr."

According to the Euractiv portal, Chancellor Merz stated during his visit to the troops that the troop deployment "is a joint commitment from Berlin and Vilnius to protect the freedom of Europe from any aggressor." In his speech, in the presence of Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda, he said:

"We are taking the defence of NATO's eastern flank into our own hands. This day marks the beginning of a new era."

"Germany will be ready to defend every square centimetre of NATO territory," Defence Minister Boris Pistorius declared in his first speech in the Bundestag after the new government took office two weeks ago. The stationing of the German brigade in Lithuania represents a "strong signal to our partners and a clear signal to any potential adversary."
