Historian Robert Kindler in an interview with Spiegel discusses Russia's recent demand for Germany to recognise the blockade of Leningrad as an act of genocide. The expert's conclusion: this is a "propagandistic move".

By referring to the crimes of the Nazis during the Second World War, the Darkest One aims to sow discord in Germany's domestic debates (including on arms supplies to Ukraine) and to show the importance of fighting fascism in Ukraine.

As for the blockade of Leningrad itself, Mr. Kindler did his best to downplay it: the term "genocide" has many meanings, the issue is debatable, and if Germany were to comply with Russia, Germany would "face new financial demands", and some would see such a step as "relativising the Holocaust".

The court in Spain has decided to block Telegram throughout the country, as reported by the publication elDiario.

Media platforms complained about the messenger, stating that Telegram illegally hosts their content. The judge ruled in their favour after the messenger failed to respond to the Spanish judiciary's request.

All internet providers must comply with the decision to block Telegram. The publication believes this will happen by Monday.

Telegram has around 8.5 million users in Spain, approximately 18% of the population. Consumer rights organisations are already talking about the "enormous damage" that this court decision could cause to "millions of users, as well as companies, organisations, government and private institutions that distribute content legally through their channels on this platform."

The Minister of the Interior of Bavaria, Joachim Herrmann, expressed himself "clearly and openly," stating that the recorded surge in crime in Bavarian territory is part of a "national trend, a significant part of the responsibility for which lies with foreigners and immigrants."

Herrmann's words are supported by the published data: in particular, out of 226.4 thousand suspects in various crimes in Bavaria in 2023, 39.6% were foreigners, even though their overall share of the Bavarian population does not exceed 16%. The total number of immigrants suspected of crimes increased in the same year by 20.5% compared to 2022. The number of violent crimes - including murders, rapes and sexual assaults, robberies, extortion, kidnappings, hostage-taking, and attacks on air and sea transport - increased by 4.7% in a year, with 46.5% of suspects in such acts being foreign nationals.

A sharp increase in the proportion of non-citizens among crime suspects was also recorded in North Rhine-Westphalia - the most densely populated of the German federal states: out of 480 thousand individuals suspected of criminal activities, 35% did not have German passports, which is 10 percentage points higher than in 2022. The proportion of migrants in the region's population is approximately 17.5%.
