Linux Experiences/Rants or Education/Certifications thread - November 11, 2019

Welcome to r/linux rants and experiences! This megathread is also to hear opinions from anyone just starting out with Linux or those that have used Linux (GNU or otherwise) for a long time.

Let us know what's annoying you, whats making you happy, or something that you want to get out to r/linux but didn't make the cut into a full post of it's own.

For those looking for certifications please use this megathread to ask about how to get certified whether it's for the business world or for your own satisfaction. Be sure to check out r/linuxadmin for more discussion in the SysAdmin world!

_Please keep questions in r/linuxquestions, r/linux4noobs, or the Wednesday automod thread._

SSH tricks -- SOCKs proxy, jump box/bastion, ssh agent

Hi all,

I have published few SSH related articles with (I would say) less know tricks:

* Dynamic port forwarding with SSH (SOCKS): [http://bruxy.regnet.cz/web/linux/EN/socks-via-ssh/](http://bruxy.regnet.cz/web/linux/EN/socks-via-ssh/)
* SSH reverse tunnel and SSH via bastion: [http://bruxy.regnet.cz/web/linux/EN/ssh-bastion/](http://bruxy.regnet.cz/web/linux/EN/ssh-bastion/)
* Using and abusing of SSH agent: [http://bruxy.regnet.cz/web/linux/EN/ssh-bastion/](http://bruxy.regnet.cz/web/linux/EN/ssh-bastion/)

Especially for SOCKs proxies, I have written a noscript helping me change my public IP any time :)

Regards,

BruXy

How is accessibility on Linux?

I'm visually impaired, I can still see.
I would like to try Linux but how is screen reader? Does it work like the NVDA on windows?
I usually use NVDA screen reader as support reading if the text is long and bigger font + dark mode on my windows.
Is there any visually impaired people using linux?

Official MS Teams Linux client preview will be available by the end of this year

The feedback forum page was updated last week: [https://microsoftteams.uservoice.com/forums/555103-public/suggestions/16911565-linux-client](https://microsoftteams.uservoice.com/forums/555103-public/suggestions/16911565-linux-client)

It's a good news for anyone who is forced to use MS Teams at work.

Libinput Trackball Scroll *Without* Holding Down a Button

So, for years I've had a Logitech Trackman Marble mouse. It's been great but one thing that has annoyed me and my finger joints is the need to hold down target libinput ScrollButton in order to scroll with the trackball.

I recently picked up an Elecom Deft trackball mouse and am taking it for a test spin. With xinput I set applicable scrolling and draglock properties and everything works as expected, but there's still this annoying hold-down-a-button to scroll restriction. The Elecom has 8 physical buttons, I'd be more than happy to "chord" a couple of spare buttons via master + modifier to get desired auto scrolling behavior.

Is this a limitation of libinput, or is there a way to scroll via the trackball without holding down a button like one can do on a trackpad via 2-finger scrolling?

Linux is not GNU/Linux

Why are some people getting upset when I say that I run Linux and insist I call it GNU/Linux just because some of the tools I use is made by the GNU project.
With that logic I should call it KDE/Linux since a lot of tools I use is created by the KDE project

NTP server preference question

I have a linux VM running on a linux host, and the VM is using both the Centos pool as well as the host's IP address for NTP (host is running ntpd).

The VM insists on syncing to a remote Stratum3 server over the host it's on, reporting lower jitter numbers.

How does this make sense? Is local KVM scheduling SO flaky that an NTP server many hops away is more consistent than the VM host I'm running on?
